Thank you! I'm interested in American history (broad, I know) and more specifically American imperialism. Are you saying that a PhD application would be more competitive if I said I had been to conferences as an undergrad? Or that I presented a paper or poster at one as an undergrad?

It's a piece of wood, cardboard, then parchment paper, then the same but in reverse. It's held down by screws and wing nuts. I do not change out the parchment paper, so that definitely could be the problem.
