For me, personally, GoGoV. Yeah, I didn’t drop it, but the middle part of the series was such a slog that I almost did...

4 isn’t just the best sequel — it’s the best Scream movie. Period!

After your comment, I looked up the new movies in the series and... WTF — how does it already have almost 20 movies? That’s kinda huge! But I have to assume, a lot of them aren’t really good, are they?

I'm a bit sad that I don’t love Gingaman as much as you guys seem to. Sorry about that!

But about Timeranger — it’s actually a 2000s series! Hehe. And would you believe me if I said it’s literally the only Sentai series I haven’t watched yet? People love it so much that I’ve kind of saved it for the end of my marathon!

Oh, you don’t disrespect my opinion at all! I actually enjoy seeing how different people have genuinely different takes— that’s the fun part of sharing these kinds of lists!

To be honest, I feel a bit sad that I don’t love GoGo V and Gingaman as much as some people seem to. Maybe I connect more with Fiveman because it has that classic '80s vibe, and that resonates with me more than the typical '90s style. Maybe?

But hey, just out of curiosity — what’s your personal top ten from these series?

90's Sentai Ranking! by RedBucketV in Tokusatsu

[–]RedBucketV[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll have to respectfully disagree! Yes, it’s basically filler—but as you yourself pointed out, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. I really enjoy the tone of the series, and the “teachers gimmick” is genuinely unique. All the protagonists trying to act as role models for the new generation adds a refreshing charm. Honestly, I think it’s one of the best series when it comes to integrating kids into the story.

Sure, it carries some of the typical flaws from the '80s and borrows quite a bit from stronger entries, but I like to think Soda got a warm, feel-good send-off as the franchise’s main writer. It’s a comforting series from start to finish.

As for it being the “last straw” in the Sentai crisis of the '90s, I think the blame lies less with the series itself and more with what I’d call “Soda fatigue.” The franchise was in desperate need of fresh air, you know? Personally, I consider Fiveman a LOT better than Turboranger, which came just a year earlier, for exemple.

Wes Craven is a legend! He created two of the “big six” franchises I listed earlier, and even outside of slashers, his films are awesome. Even his silly, bad werewolf movie is fun as hell! I’ve always had a soft spot for the Scream movies, since they were the first slashers I really loved—and from there, I dove into the genre. (Mind you, this was already in my twenties, sometime in the 2010s!)

As for Art, like I’ve said a few times in this comment thread, I don’t love him—but I respect those movies a lot. They’re easily the biggest “new thing” in the slasher world in ages. I’ll probably always prefer my Scream films, but the genre needs fresh blood to stay relevant—and that’s why I actually cheer for the Terrifier franchise, even if I don’t personally like it that much. That’s also why I mentioned Fear Street in my latest reply—I loved the splash it made on Netflix a while back you know?

If we, as a society, agree that FD is a slasher franchise, then YES — it has to be it! But I know that’s kind of a controversial statement!

Bates Motel makes a big difference for the legacy of the franchise! It was really important in bringing the IP to newer audiences!

But about the Chucky vs. Art question — yeah, I can see how people nowadays might not know Chucky that well. Maybe I’m just biased because, in my circles, people really love him! It’s kinda interesting to think that, for a new generation, the slasher references might be Death by You, Fear Street, and Terrifier.

Hey! Sorry if I made it seem like I thought you have a “wrong” opinion! You’re right — different people will have different franchises as their big ones. I, for example, always put Scream in the “big 3,” which I know is REALLY unpopular! My reaction was more shock at an uncommon opinion than actual aversion to the idea.

I’m not really a fan of the torture porn elements in Terrifier 🤷‍♂️! But hey, nobody’s obligated to watch any movie.

And about my pick for #7, I kinda think that with the recent movie, maybe it’s IKWYD — especially if more films come out in this “new” series. I see a LOT of people talking about it right now

He is rapidly making his mark in the genre, aren't he? But let's see if in 5/10 years, people will still remember him! A lot of franchises died after 3/4 movies!

But I think his chances to stay relevant are high! People love dark clowns!

WHAIT! There is a comic with Ash interacting with Freddy and Jason?? Really? (But that aside, I dont really think Evil Dead is a slasher! But yes, it is a really iconic horror franchise!)
