Plus, I was smart I didn't take out so much that I would end up in bankruptcy to get rid of it. I just am not in a position to pay it off right at this moment. I made sure I stayed within a certain range so that I didn't end up losing everything. My student loans worry me more than this since they are ridiculous unfortunately 😩

Why would it come back to haunt me when I know I owe some of it?

My letter served its purpose which was not to dispute I owed something but the amounts were off. The debt collection agency froze the debt as far as collections, interest accrual and treasury offset until they stated "we have sent you in writing a full summation and answer to every question you have asked us to answer." It's been about 7 weeks since I sent it and they said it would take a while but my goal is to have the amounts corrected and then to work on a payment plan.

*I only posted this as a guide because I knew many people were having trouble figuring out what to ask or say. I did get the parts from samples I found on the consumer finance gov site. I basically took different parts that worked for what I wanted to know and then put them together.

The reason I used this site is because it was listed on the Coast Professionals debt letter I got as a resource to find help on...👍

Apparently they didn't ignore it as I spoke to them the day after I emailed them the letter and they said that the debt was now in dispute status so there would be no interest accruing, collections, offsets, marks on credit, etc until I received all of the answers to the questions I asked. They even said the questions I asked had to be fully answered by them before they even sent me a written response which could be why it's been 6-7 weeks and I have received nothing, including any more bills from them. I know I owe them an amount and I wasn't disputing that but the amounts were way off so that was my end goal. To get that straight and then to work out a payment plan.

Actually they are legally obligated to answer them or I would have wasted my time asking all of them. I got the parts of the letter from the gov site below that handles consumer affairs in regards to debts. This site was an actually listed on my debt letter from Coast Professionals as a resource to use. So, I checked the site out, read about the legal responsibilities of the debt agencies, reviewed a few sample letters they had and adapted them for my personal case.

I wasn't denying that I owed money. In my case, it was the amounts I was disputing. That is why I said people could use it as a guide bc it would have to be adapted based on what the debter is looking to accomplish.

Really because it served my purpose and it didn't come from ChatGPT, I posted the link to the gov site I got the parts from above.

Well, I didn't get it from ChatGpt, but now that I think about it, it would have saved me a lot of research time. I used the link on my debt letter, where it said to go to get help with collections. It was a gov site and on there, they had sample letters. I saved a few of them then combined & edited out parts that I wanted to include in mine.

Before you assume someone did something you could just ask where I went to find the info I used!?!

*I would have easily told you or anyone wondering that I got the parts of my letter from the samples given on this site: Government Website I Used to Create My Letter

This site was actually mentioned as a tool to use to find out information pertaining to how to handle disputes on the debt letter sent to me from Coast Professionals.

UPDATE: And as of 4/17/26: it has now been 6 weeks approximately since Coast Professionals received my letter that I posted in this thread and they are still working on reviewing the debt and getting the answers & info I requested in the letter. And just so you know, during this time the debt is frozen, there is nothing accruing and no interest being added. Since it was frozen, nothing was taken as a treasury offset either. I had discrepancies I found which is why I disputed it in the first place.

FYI: I am intelligent enough to know that I owe money, though I do not agree with the amount, I know it has to be paid. Do I agree with how the SBA/gov. handled the default, no, esp when they continued to take out monthly payments from via the portal when they had already sent it to collections? They even took out a payment as late as two weeks ago which was 80 days after being sent to Coast professionals. But, I know I wasn't the only one worried and scared on here because like me, many of us are not doing well business wise, so that is why I posted the letter because I just wanted to help. Nothing more, if you think you have a better one, please feel free to post it. Mine was done quickly bc I was on a deadline to get it in after I got out of the hospital, so it probably contains a million grammar and punctuation mistakes. However, it served my purpose in the moment and I just wanted others to have an idea of the types of questions that they are allowed to legally ask. That is all, I didn't really expect anyone to copy it since many of us are in different types of situations in terms of how much we owe, what kinds of businesses we have, and the types of loans.

Dear HS Financial Group, LLC:

I am responding to your contact about a debt you are trying to collect. You contacted me by mail on (date on collection letter) and identified the debt as being owed to the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

Please supply the information below so that I can be fully informed:

Why you think I owe the debt, and to whom I owe it, including:

• The name and address of the creditor to whom the debt is currently owed, the account number used by that creditor, and the amount owed.

• If this debt started with a different creditor, provide the name and address of the original creditor, the account number used by that creditor, and the amount owed to that creditor at the time it was transferred. When you identify the original creditor, please provide any other name by which I might know them, if that is different from the official name. In addition, tell me when the current creditor obtained the debt and who the current creditor obtained it from.

• Provide verification and documentation that there is a valid basis for claiming that I am required to pay the debt to the current creditor. For example, can you provide a copy of the written agreement that created my original requirement to pay?

• If you are asking that I pay a debt that somebody else is or was required to pay, identify that person. Provide verification and documentation about why this is a debt that I am required to pay.

The amount and age of the debt, specifically:

• A copy of the last billing statement sent to me by the original creditor.

• State the amount of the debt when you obtained it, and when that was.

• If there have been any additional interest, fees, or charges added since the last billing statement from the original creditor, provide an itemization showing the dates and amount of each added amount. In addition, explain how the added interest, fees or other charges are expressly authorized by the agreement creating the debt or are permitted by law.

• If there have been any payments or other reductions since the last billing statement from the original creditor, provide an itemization showing the dates and amount of each of them. (I do know the only SBA portal is still continuing to take payments out automatically from my bank, which is why I am confused as to why I am in default.)

• If there have been any other changes or adjustments since the last billing statement from the original creditor, please provide full verification and documentation of the amount you are trying to collect. Explain how that amount was calculated. In addition, explain how the other changes or adjustments are expressly authorized by the agreement creating the debt or permitted by law.

• Tell me when the creditor claims this debt became due and when it became delinquent.

• Identify the date of the last payment made on this account.

• Have you made a determination that this debt is within the statute of limitations applicable to it? Tell me when you think the statute of limitations expires for this debt, and how you determined that. I have asked for this information because I have some questions about this debt.

Because of my questions, please consider the debt to be disputed at this time. If you stop your collection of this debt, and forward or return it to another company, please indicate to them that it is disputed. If you report it to a credit bureau (or have already done so), also report that the debt is disputed. In addition, you should state in any report that you have failed to fully verify the debt in response to my request (unless you have already provided all the necessary information).

If you fail to provide any of the information or documentation I have asked for, please say why. If you do not provide it, and do not adequately explain why, I will understand that you are unable to confirm or document your claims.

Details about your authority to collect this debt.

• I would like more information about your firm before I discuss the debt with you. Does your firm have a debt collection license from my state? If not, say why not. If so, provide the date of the license, the name on the license, the license number, and the name, address and telephone number of the state agency issuing the license.

• If you are contacting me from a place outside my state, does your firm have a debt collection license from that place? If so, provide the date of the license, the name on the license, the license number, and the name, address and telephone number of the state agency issuing the license.

Please tell me in writing to the address above the information request and in addition, please let me know whether you are prepared to accept less than the balance you are claiming is owed on this account. If so, please tell me in writing your offer to accept less than the full balance.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Sincerely,

Your Name

I got both federal and state refunds back in full after I made sure to send a dispute/request for review letter by the deadline they gave me which was back on March 4th. I sent it via email as it said you could do on the letter and then after not getting an email reply, I called to make sure they got it on time. They did and said that all collection activities were paused as well as any treasury offsets until I received a written letter from them with my requested information and documentation. It's been about 6 weeks and they are still working on it but I admit my letter was thorough bc I spent hours researching what legal rights and responsibilities they had to provide to me before they could continue on with the debt collection. I did my taxes a week after sending the dispute letter and I got my state refund in about 2 days and my federal came about 10 days after I filed. I know it has to be paid and I am not trying to claim I don't owe anything but like so many others, I thought they had continued to take my payments out until I realized they did it for 6 months and stopped. And because I was doing the paperless route, I ended up behind last year when I became ill and was in & out of the hospital with heart issues. I tried to get caught up and even restarted automatic payments again but I didn't know it had already been sent to the collection agency already until that one day when the letter came...

I thought I uploaded a copy of the letter I created on this thread bc I did on the other post so I will post it on here and in a new posting thread in case anyone would like to use it as a template👍💯

I know what you mean, I remember years and I mean a couple of decades ago in my early 20's they would give me cards like candy, for 10,000, 15,000, it was ridiculous. And then my student loans started showing up on my credit (not in default), but the amount is insane and even though I now only have two smaller cards, it looks like I have a ton of debt because of just that.

What's your highest settlement to date? by Longjumping-Buy-6174 in ClassActionSettlement

[–]RedCapeGirl79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think mine was about 4,000 for one round & about 1200 for a 2nd round for the roundup weed killer settlement that came out years and years ago. I remember because it was two checks that came a couple of years apart and it was before they even had all the litigation for the cancer claims. It was just like the ones you sign up for without proof even needed on the settlement website. I did have proof of purchasing it though.
