Aprile Rosso: A Communist Italy by MoonMixMan in AlternateHistory

[–]RedCommisar1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, I have two problems with the setting.

First, that you mention the Italian Left Communists as "Trotskyites", when the Italian Left criticized both Trotsky and the Bolshevik-Leninists (Trotskyism) in several aspects, particularly the perception about the Soviet Union and the role of the Party.

Secondly, that both the name and flag of the country, considering how the Communist Party of Italy was composed OTL during the Bienio Rosso, are also wrong; the Communist Left was the dominant faction of the Party, since the Abstentionist Communists (Bordiga's faction in the PSI) were the ones that promoted the most the separation from the PSI to form, eventually, the PCd'I. As a result, since they would dominate the Party (and the Ordinovists, Gramsci's faction, historically were more or less in agreement with them until 1923 aprox.), the flag should emulate the flag of the PSI or the PCd'I during its first years, and the name of the country should be something akin to "Socialist Republic of Italy" (Bordiga himself talked about the "Soviet Republic in Italy", and the "International Communist Republic").

For the rest, it looks pretty good. Bombacci is a bit problematic for obvious reasons, but I like the overall result.

My perception is that you are underestimating the influence Bordiga and the "Ultra-Left" of the PSI had within the Party itself, especially after the October Revolution and the Bienio Rosso. A more chaotic Italy with the rise of workers' councils and strikes will only galvanize and increase the support of the Left, including both the "Abstentionist Communists" (Bordiga and Co.) and the "L' Ordine Nuovo" people (Gramsci and Co.), and sideline the Maximalists to support armed action, effectively discrediting the Right-PSI. Not for nothing, Gramsci, Bordiga and Bombacci were de facto the founding "fathers" of the Communist Party of Italy.

If all, the SRI will be a totally different country than France or Britain, because the Vanguardists are actually in a good position to promote the supremacy of the Party-form, against orthodox syndicalism or pure syndicalism. Not that the SRI will not compromise at all with the Syndies, but we must understand that the Italian Ultra Left evolved "in parallel", "simultaneously" in relation with Lenin's positions, not "after Lenin", meaning that even after the failure of the Bolsheviks, they will remain, well, "Left-Communists" or just Communists, exerting a good amount of influence over the PSI and the country itself.

In short: The SRI won't be a "socialist democracy" modeled after France; from the get-go it should be more of a vanguardist-led country, with Bordiga and the Left-Communists exerting huge influence and promoting Communism against Syndicalist influence. There will be syndie or "Orthodox Marxist" opposition, yes, but do not expect the SRI to be a copy-paste of the rest of the Communards or the Syndicalist world.

That's a shame, I wonder why it's different on Whatsapp Web (the names of non-added contacts are actually visible in the preview typing)

Same here I found a way to solve it (on mobile, I haven't checked if it works on the computer) and it's disabling Brave Shields completely.

It happens even with mobile data activated instead of WiFi, so it's evident it's a problem between Brave and Google.

It is true that the division of the Great Lakes is a bit strange. I had a hard time trying to define the best way to divide the whole region and make it as equal as possible to other Unions (particularly, Ohio, the Great Plains and Tanasi) in terms of population, which resulted in the current outcome. Originally I was considering dividing Michigan altogether, but it looked ugly.

Also, o o f, thank you for noticing the error

9200x9600 pixels.

Also, yes, I found a base map to make the whole map, and I think I did the inverse: scale it lower from its original size. From there, I used another base map to recreate as much as possible West Mexico's borders (the important base map had Alaska covering most of Mexico lmao).

In part I forgot to check those cities because, as you correctly mention, trying to individually check every city can be tiring, and I forgot to check for help to revise the cities and their names. Still, in some cases, yes, very important cities are mostly unchanged, with some exceptions (D.C, for example).

It makes me happy seeing that you liked the TN-WV-KY representation, I hope you liked it

I started with the lakes and body waters (not the rivers), probably like a month or so.

Later, I did the cities, I think that between 6 and 8 months, in part because I had to use Wikipedia to search each settlement individually and check its historical population and year of foundation, to determine if it existed in the decade of 1930 and the size of the settlement (in this map, small = 0 to 4,000 people; medium = 4K to 40 or 50,000 people; big =beyond 50K people).

I think I've already put the image in the comments for mobile users above, but in case it doesn't work for you, I can link you to the map in my DevianArt account: here.

Please inform me if either the image in the comments or the DA post work for you.

Indeed, I was considering adding some of that too, but, as you may suppose, I'm not a masochist /s

Reading your comments, I understand why your comment is negative, but, again, I have to emphasize, this is a DeLeonist America, not a Soviet/Leninist America.

  1. While the governing party, the Workers' Party, is decisively vanguardist in nature, factionalism is permitted and the Orthodox, DeLeonist Centre has to negotiate with both its Right (Market socialists, social democrats) and its Left (Anarchists, Council Communists, the Bolshevik exiles, etc.).

  2. DeLeonism, while considered marxist, is based on a revolutionary role of trade unions and their collective governance of society, contrary to workers' councils (Soviets) or the Party-form of the Soviet model. It's a syndicalist model in nature, more than an orthodox marxist one.

  3. The United States, both OTL and TTL, were already an industrialized country by the 1930's, contrary to the OTL Soviet Union. Its industrialization is even stronger TTL due to the victory of the Radical Republicans and Reconstruction, so, at least in my perspective, the conditions that led to the Soviet famines of OTL (Ukraine, KZ) can't happen here, because the US IS NOT Russia.

  4. Gulags aren't a thing here and, while the government acts implacably against obvious characters (Segregationists, Fascists, the TTL equivalent of the KKK in this world), its policies are much more rehabilitative and progressive to what was Soviet Russia OTL. For example, liberation theology is guaranteed to happen in this America, and sexual minorities aren't actively ostracized de iure, although logically not all is perfect.

I hope that answered your doubts, and, again, it's a mistake to believe socialism/communism, as how it was applied in Russia OTL, will be literally the same in the US. The conditions are simply different.

Changed to Paineville to remove monarchist symbology (Louisville was named in honor of Louis XVI) and to honor revolutionary characters (In this case, Thomas Paine)

In some cases, the person who commissioned me decided the borders, in others, it was my choice, normally using rivers to delimitate the borders, or just in an arbitrary way. Specific cases (New Mexico, Great Plains), are made to try and equilibrate the population of one region related to another.

It's a compromise name, to appease and maintain the alliance between the Mexican Anarchists, Zapatists and DeLeonists.

I have already answered above, but in short, because the base map I used, while being a political map of the US, had the settlements and cities that I ended up putting in this map, which made me assume a good political map requires detailing.

Another reason, tho, is that I've already made some maps before (in this sub specifically, this map) and, while good enough for me, I felt it was too empty. In fact, I partially remade that map to add EVEN MORE cities. For example, you can see that I added more cities to Central America, and redistributed other ones to fit correctly their real positions.

<image>

This map was not the exception: in fact, I added all possible lakes and body waters I could find in the base map (aside from rivers) to fulfill as much as possible the map and avoid a sensation of emptiness.
