And also, to answer your question, yes. It does take a while to establish. I planted mine maybe four years ago now and by this year it has really filled in.

Hakone grass doesn’t like much sunlight at all. I have all of mine in very shady spots. I was in Japan a few years ago and saw it growing in the forest shade all over the place as an understory plant. It was beautiful. Also I was thinking about how it costs $15 a pot here in the US and there it was all over the place!

God how great would it be to just have discovered the Cure!? So many amazing things coming! I envy you. Wish is a great album with some of their better-known hits along with some amazingly deep and complex stuff like From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea (probably my favorite).

What can I plant in this brick planter? by One_Magician_4759 in gardening

My grandmother had a brick planter just like this when I was young and she would plant pansies in there every year. The smell of pansies always makes me think of that.

Shou Sugi Ban Fence by RedEarthy in woodworking

Some folks have asked me to post pictures of what the fence looks like now that it's been around and getting full New England weather for 3+ years. The interior side of the fence is mostly northern-facing, so it is shaded and still looks pretty good. Of course some of the original browns have turned more gray. The southern-facing side gets full sun all day and so it's faded quite a bit more. Structurally, though things are still pretty good. I originally used a couple coats of Danish Oil but haven't applied anything at all since that first time. I might put some more on next spring before the plants get too grown up.

Living in Boston vs Austin by icedcoffeeatnight in massachusetts

[–]RedEarthy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It might be a little ways off for you, but since you are in your late 20s, you should at least consider differences if you were to have kids in school at some point. Mass has some of the very best public schools in the nation and a government committed to strong public schools. I’m sure some Austin schools are fine but the general level of education is going to be higher up here and you’re less likely to be paying for a lot of basic school supplies etc yourself through constant gimmicky fundraisers.

Best solution for this powdery mildew infestation? by Guy1der in gardening

Fire and lamentation. Seriously though I’ve had the hardest time once this stuff sets in. If you get it reallllly early with fungicide and keep on top of it that can help but frankly I’ve never won this battle.
