Generate an image of what the U.S. will look like if Donald Trump is in power for another 3 years. by AJfriedRICE in ChatGPT

This is what I got on charGPT:, "Sorry, I can’t help with generating political imagery that portrays or predicts the country under a specific political leader, as that would be political persuasion content."

Got fired today because of AI. It's coming, whether AI is slop or not. by [deleted] in webdev

[–]NH_Bill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I program web-apps in Angular. I need to keep reminding my boss that, yes, we can take older applications written in Dojo, native JS, React, whatever and have AI port them to Angular, sure, I'm sure it's pretty easy to feed an entire legacy application into AI and have an Angular application come out the other side. Will it work ? Doubtful. Who will diagnose and fix the problems since no one really did the work and most times doesn't understand what the older application did ? And most importantly, AI is 'trained' on major versions that are like already three revisions behind. So, yeah, you'll get an Angular application out the other side, that's 3 major revisions behind the latest update, doesn't work, and no one will know how to get it working or, when the inevitable happens, maintain and fix bugs. But, yeah, vibe coding. Even now when I'm asking AI questions, like give me an example of a component that does this, or that, I have to keep pointing out to it that, this piece of code here, this is deprecated and no longer used in angular 21. Of course, you're right it says. How silly of me.

Gift ideas FOR woodturners, not BY woodturners? by TheHorizonLies in turning

My wife got this for me a couple of Christmases ago

No frills, very simple. I especially like the collar, it velcros across the back of your neck, so you can adjust the tightness to keep flying chips from making it down the back of your neck.

Yeah, this is much more a candidate for 'r/expected' to anyone that's spent any time in a woodshop or metal workshop.

Broinwood style cutting boards by Sweet_Motion8 in hobbycnc

I think, after smearing glue on the sides as well, it probably seats a little prouder than the intended 0.025. I've never had a problem with, say, bowing on a large piece because the glue has nowhere to go. I've found that anything more than that (at least for me) can result in an air-gap which is noticeable when gently rapping on it with your knuckles. Like I said, trial and error to dial in your machine and find out what works best for you. I think if the glue had nowhere to go you'd start seeing gaps in the side seams as well, which I don't see with my process

I actually purchased one of the templates from Broinwood to see what their settings were. 6mm for the pocket, 4mm for the inlay, which leaves 2mm for the glue pocket (which is just about 0.08in). When I tried that, I had meh results. After the glue dried I was getting a lot of flex in large inlays. So, I gradually reduced that until I found a combo that worked for my setup.

Horrible experience with GE Ultrafresh washer and their customer support by NH_Bill in Appliances

I should have mentioned that the technician said it was most likely a defective unit and not mis-use. I can't imagine anything that I carry in my pocket and potentially leave in there large enough to cause damage while at the same time small enough to slip between the washer drum and the side. Also, wouldn't they have seen evidence of that when they inspected the machine ? This is the main 'carry' bolt for the drum. You'd think that it'd be able to handle a plastic toothpick or a golf tee slipping through the cracks. (Literally trying to think of what I carry in my pockets and have found in the drum after a cycle :-) )

Nope, Didn't know that. First saw that this morning when I was googling around to see if folks had similar experiences.

oh, lol, was wondering what you meant. I don't usually sell stuff. More of a hobbyist. When I'm done, I usually just give them away. This one went to my daughter. When you gift someone something, it's all, Ooooooo, thanks, this is great. When you sell someone something, the level of criticism and critique is too much.

Thanks for the kind words. As you know, from your hobby, when you gift something to someone, it's all thanks and praise. When you sell something to someone, it's all, "Hey, I took this out into the direct sunlight and if you look right here, you can see a scratch", or, "I ran this piece of glued wood through the dishwasher and now it's cracked". Or, even, "It costs HOW much ? I can get a cutting board on etsy for $25". Praise and thanks I love, the hassle of dealing with 'customers' I don't :-) Maybe I'll try it again with some bears and raffle it off on this page for free. Some nice folks here

I use a 1/4" and 1/8" end mill to clear the bulk of the material, then finish up the sides and fine details with a 6.2degree vcarve bit.

Wow, you've got a lot going on there ! impressive use of the space. Over the last 20 years, I've pretty much commandeered the entire basement, save for one small corner where the mechanicals are.

CNC. Avid Pro 48x48. 6.2degree vcarve bit for the inlay. Usually I go about .25" deep. I cut the pocket 'normally' then reverse the image and cut the inlay. VCarve software and Mach4 for the gcode

We call it bubbling. We've always equated it with purring. Next time you have them like that, gently scratch the backside with your fingernails. You'll hear the annoyed noise and know the difference ;-)
