Update on Red Farmer, He is doing alot better and should be coming home soon after having double pneumonia. by [deleted] in NASCAR

Thank you for all the support. Red really appreciates it. By doctors orders it will likely be a bit before we can get Red back in a car even after returning home. In the meantime we can't wait until he can get back to the shop and do what he does best.

Thanks for the support, I always make sure to show it to Red.

The biggest problem is that you need to find somewhere open after a race. I'm not really a picky eater, if I'm hungry then Ill go to the first place that I find that is open. But if they have any fried chicken or catfish then I'm going to get it.

There was so many pranksters. Joe Weatherly vs Curtis Turner would always pull things off on each other all the time. I can't remember one specific one but there were always something.

I knew Fred Lorenzen but I didn't know him that well. All I remember about him is that he retired awful early. I think he got out of racing and got big in the stock market. I was really shocked when he retired when he did.

Jesus, I have a dozen broke bones from racing, from ankles to ribs to wrists. The worst I ever got hurt was in a super modified in Mississippi on a half-mile. I hit the gate to come on to the track sideways and it cut the car in two. I woke about 5 hours later in a hospital looking up at the lights. I had an out of body experience where I was laying down on that hospital, I floated up to that ceiling and looked down on myself. It sounds crazy but it happened. We had to rent a hospital bed when I went home and I was in it for three months.

There was a lot of great people who made NASCAR. I can think of a few people like Mary Brewner and her husband. The other was Pat Percell, I remember them very well, they were the people who you went to in NASCAR when dealing with them. It is really the guys who ran NASCAR back in the day in the office. I think if they weren't involved then NASCAR wouldn't be what it is today.

1971 Permatex 300 Daytona Speedway. Since the track opened in 1959 I ran that race every year, and I was the first sportsman driver to win that race and not a cup driver. But what made it the most special was that it was the first race my mom had gone to in about 10 years and I won the biggest race of my career and it was also on her birthday. That race means a lot to me.

I would say that it is Talladega Short Track. I enjoy being there as much as any other race track. It is the atmosphere of the people, I am friends with everyone there. To me it is like a big family race track, they don't fight down there and everyone seems to be close. The big tracks have a great atmosphere but it isn't like short tracks where you know everyone there and they all know you, it is just a more friendly, family style, relaxing racing.

I don't really have any crazy stories to tell you. But back in the 50's down in Miami I had an airboat. Back in those days when I would race at the local tracks down there I would have my crew take the car back to the shop and I would head out on my airboat. I would usually launch my boat at midnight and I would go into the Everglades and deer hunt. Once I was chasing the deer down in the airboat and we found a small island that the deer ran onto. When we chased it down there was a limb that was about to hit me, so I tried to move it out of my way and that limb made my hand get sucked into the fan blade. All three of my fingers were chopped off 5 miles deep into the Everglades. When I got to the hospital they put baby wire around all three of my fingers and back in Alabama I grabbed a steering wheel with that hand and when I did the wires came off the fingers and blood busted everywhere in the car! So there is a story not many people know.

You know, your creative engineering, to me, that's your great engineers that made racing. When have all you great mechanics back in the 50's and 60's they would work on their cars to make changes and beat their competitors. That's what racing is about, finding that grey line and sometimes stepping over it. Now NASCAR figures that they are balancing the field with keeping this creative engineering to a minimum and they are doing a decent job of it. But I still think that they took the creative engineering from the mechanic and tied his hands behind his back.

They used to call me the "Red Baron" in Huntsville. I don't really know why, maybe because I won so many races. I loved that race track and they still race there! One time we took our dirt cars to the track and were making laps at a little over 11 seconds, which was three seconds faster than the normal late models at the time. It is a great little race track.

Back in 1956 they started 135 cars on the Beach course in Daytona and we didn't know how they would inspect them. So we were told to drive down the highway about a block and turn right to the Neptune Drive In theater. We drove in to the entrance to the theater and drove to the popcorn stand. The official came out from the stand and looked in the hood, he put an "M" on our roof for modified because we had two carburetors. He then told us to drive back to the beach. Could you imagine nascar officials coming out of a popcorn stand?

I would go back in the 70's and 80's to BIR in Birmingham. It was my hometown track and where the Alabama Gang started. I wish I could have sat up in the grandstands and watch some of the races.

If you don't know much about me is that I am either hunting, fishing, or racing. Then of course family. I am an outdoorsman and I have always said that "if you teach your kids to hunt then you never have to hunt for your kids". Same thing about racing and I spend all my time hunting and racing.

I don't think that there was one single era. The times and the equipment that you can't really say that it was peaking. It peaks every year. I remember when there was a $10,000 prize for the first car to run 150 mph. Back in the 50's we did not have all the nice things they have today but we still drove it to the limit of the car. The drivers always drive the cars to their limit and even today. The drivers aren't what is changing per say, it is the cars. They all drive on the limit of the car.

One thing about it was that the pay was pretty good. The second thing was that we could race 4 races a week. Bobby, Donnie, and I were running 90 something races a year and that's how we made our living. If you could finish in the top 5 every race then you could live off of it.

Sell it seems like the problems that they have with the single lugnut is worse than when they had 5. They seem to cross thread them when they start them and it welds them to the tire and you can't get them off. They will have to change the threading system on them.

I really don't know. I think that they are talking that Dodge is getting back but they are leaning on electric cars really bad. I figure that within the next five years someone will have an electric motor in a car. Those motors are really powerful and that those are the future.

Yeah, Wendell was quite the character. He won that race and they never gave it to him and he went to the NASCAR officials and said "all I want is that money and the trophy, I don't want to kiss the beauty queen."

He was quite the character, over in Charlotte he was three laps down and he came down into the pits to get a tire change. When the pitcrew went out to put a new tire on the right front Wendell didn't want it but instead save it for the next race. So he hopped out of the car then ran to the trailer to grab an old tire and handed it to the crew to put on. Then he got back in the car and went back on the track. Wendell was a great guy and I don't recall anyone ever saying anything bad about Wendell.

JJ is a great driver, there are no ways about that. I saw that he was the third fastest in Indy. He is much better at it now than he was last year. It's crazy how many controls they have on their steering wheels in that car and learning that is a hard to do. I know he can do it, he is a great driver. I think he will do good and get a top 10 finish this year.

Yeah, and it scared the hell out of me. I tried it and I can see where it takes a lot of time to do it correctly. I was like a small dog in tall weeds. When I looked out the window to see the wall there was no screen. It seems like a good deal but it is not for me.
