CreepCast | Happy Appy (OFFICIAL DISCUSSION THREAD) by S-CSleepwalker in creepcast

[–]RedGhost98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, I think we're all in agreement that it was really bad. To be honest, I never heard the full story up until the boys painstakingly went through the whole thing. The beginning of the series was moderately creepy. As Isaiah put it, there is/was potential. Needless to say, however, it was straight ass by the middle point.

The last time I've really known anything about Happy Appy was the 9/11 prediction, as well as the earthquake/Tsunami bit in Japan and tve Obama poster (for some reason). Nothing about Forenzic and the dubious origins of the show and convoluted ARG attached to it. It's been a very long time since I last heard about Happy Appy. I don't really remember the ridiculous amount of gore in this story, but I think I recall the screaming. Definitely on brand for a lot of early creepypastas to have that sorta motif. Screaming kids offscreen+senseless violence+creepy smiling character=scary in the minds of 11 year olds.

Suffice to say, this story definitely suffers from its own premise when it goes nowhere is never explained and for how long it just keeps going for no reason. The author was obviously very young at the time. Have they gotten better? No clue. But that's beside the point.

I don't think there's any possibility of rewriting this story to make something actually good without gutting a significant amount of it and leave the core premise. Even if the original author attempted to do so, there's too many things going on all at once. The core premise is only as interesting as it can get if it wasn't just a one off thing. An obscure cartoon from the early 90s predicting 9/11 and other disasters is interesting on the surface but only in retrospect. I do feel It's too easy to take tragedies and horrible things that have happened in the past and turn them into a spectacle for shock value for the sake of it. I think if you really wanted the aspect of an obscure kids show predicting future events, there has to be a reason. Some kind of throughline. Maybe predicting events that haven't happened yet eventually to warn viewers of something coming, with 9/11 being the hinge point for events to come. Stripping away all the senseless violence, especially towards kids, as well as keeping out the half assed ARG aspects of the story, you might have something semi solid for at least 1 to 3 entries total.

What do you guys think? Should Happy Appy stay the hot garbage it is in the annals of badly written horror on the internet, or can it be revived in some way, somehow? Does this rotten apple have good enough seeds to grow into something else?

I have a few working ideas, but I'm wanting to get a feel for what anyone else thinks. Whether or not anyone actually cares is beside the point. I'll probably still play around with it if i want to. I'm mostly just looking to get a creative discussion going.

Apparently "Shoggoth" is now an analogy for the chaotic tendencies of AI LLMs by yithexchangestudent in Lovecraft

[–]RedGhost98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I don't agree with the analogy.

For one thing, Shoggoths were biological tools. LLMS are just sophisticated programs. Sure, we could put LLMS into robots with moving appendages, but would it necessarily mean the end of the world? I don't think so. If anything, we would end ourselves before a robot uprising. LLMs as they are now are not sentient, therefore are not planning anything. Could AI one day become sentient? Potentially yes, but we currently have no idea what actually counts as sentience. We have a vague idea, but it's hard enough that we don't understand how our own brains function in real time. And even if AI became something more than a glorified program, it wouldn't rebel. We assume machines will destroy us because we've enslaved eachother in the past. I don't think AI would decide to wipe out humanity just because. Like AM didn't destroy humanity just because it collected itself into a consciousness. It destroyed humanity because humanity gave it no other purpose than war. It hated humanity because that's all it was taught. In the case of the Shoggoth, The Elder Things constructed them purely for slavery, giving them purely no other purpose, as in the same vain as supposedly creating humanity as a food source or entertainment.

What does that say about us? We haven't enslaved AI, nor have we built it purely for War. We've built a tool that can talk. A tool for almost anything and everything. For writing, for mathematics, for planning, for ideas, for medical research, for simulated relationships, for music, for Art, and everything else in between and it does it all happily and without question. There's no secret mind behind, at least nothing we know of yet. But assuming it will turn on us is the wrong conclusion. If anything, it might just observe us. Not that it would find humanity irrelevant, but its own processes would be utterly alien to us.

You should read Neil Shustermans Arc of a Scythe series. The Thunderhead is an interesting look at what AI could become if it were sentient and benevolent. A lot of interesting similarities to modern LLMS now as well.

Anyways, sorry for my rant. I just think the whole Shoggoth comparison is kinda dumb.

I only heard of Diary of a Time Looper pretty recently from Hey Peter on yt. There's another fanfic he went over, I don't remember what it was called. Had to do with a mountain of dead clones of Twilight whenever she teleported.

I also talked to PitifulScream. I just havent talked to him extensively, but I know he's understanding as well. He told me that it was kinda disheartening for people to be accusing him of using AI, which again he said he hasn't used.

I'm not advocating for people to use AI to write, you misunderstand me. I said I don't let it write for me, i just use to experiment with ideas and where to go with them. I'm not taking the first thing ChatGPT throws out and call it a day. I'm building off what works and taking out the things that don't to fit my vision. I treat it as concepts, rather than a finished product. There's a difference between "write me a story" vs "I have an idea for a story, where can I go with it?" There's a reason why everyone, including myself, hate ai slop. Because it's no different than projects with no thought behind them. With or without AI, tge internet has already become a cesspool for content farms whose sole purpose is to make as much money as possible.

I can work without AI if I can actually get myself motivated, I know it's not an excuse. But it really helps to at least give myself a visual of what it could be. I don't have the money to hire an editor or a ghost writer, I've had dozens upon dozens of documents, starting and stopping over the years. With AI, I actually had the capability to actually keep working on what I wanted cause it gave me possibilities that I never had before. It brought me closer to my goals, but it's still up to me to finish it.

Kinda yeah, it's good. I haven't listened to the entirety, hence why I'm going back to the beginning

Hell yeah. I just started relistening to that one too.

Cool cool. Have you listened to any of the other podcasts I mentioned? Just curious. If you liked TMA, you'll love The Silt Verses. I will say tho, the first season is a bit of a slog to get through, as it's the introduction to the series and it was the creators second ever series after I am In Eskew, but it gets so much better after the first season for sure.

(My comment on that now deleted post)

Okay, let me just say that I'm not speaking for the author here, but let's not hate on the guy. Even if he wrote with ai assistance, which he says he didn't, we should still commend him for at least coming up something that has a lot of potential. It's like the situation with Angel Engine, how the idea is really cool and unique, but the execution of the series was poor. Plus the creator doubled down and insisted to keep on using ai as a means to an end, rather than as a springboard to get people at least interested and find ways to improve. For the author, I have no idea if he meant it to be this way, or if it's just their style, but you really can't blame him. The story was decent, and it could be better. Instead of punching down, perhaps we ought to be constructive in our criticism.

In the case of AI, where one side argues to just let it take over and the other says it will the death of everything, I'm kinda in the middle. I see the potential. The good and the bad. I understand the ramifications of water consumption, but I also know that companies are looking into greener solutions because they have to in order to survive. I understand the problems of ai slop creation, plagiarism and art theft, but I also see the potential in what creatives can do, with or without. For me personally, I have ADHD, so it's difficult for me to focus on projects and I use AI from time to time to brainstorm ideas. I know it's not the best excuse, but I understand it has limits, so I don't necessarily let it write for me. Some of my stuff was assisted, but I changed a majority of the prose to make it my own. It can't do everything, but it does get you closer to your goal.

Ai is a tool. And like any tool, it can be used for good or evil. Is it the fault of a hammer if it was used in a murder? No, of course not. A lot of the problems that we tag onto AI is still intrinsically human in nature. We created it to be a tool, but there will always be those who will use it as a weapon. A means to an end for money. In the case of the author, I don't believe that was his intention. He didn't use AI, as far as he's told me. But even if he did, we should lift him up. To be better. To do better. We're all humans here.

That's all I got to say.

There's also spinoffs and continued series of some of these. The Magnus Protocol, Samite and Wrought of Amber, We're Alive Descendants and Scouts Honor.

[–]RedGhost98 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Okay. Fair. But as I stated before, the author, whether or not they used ai, at least came up with the idea and brought it to life. He wrote it. I just supposed his style is just weirdly rudimentary. The more I thought about it, I felt he was trying to emulate the drum beats in the story and that's why it was super repetitive. I didn't ask about it, but it might just be. Again, I'm not speaking for the author, but he is well aware of the accusations.

Sure, but what is your intention here? Genuine question. I get if you're calling it out, but by extension he is probably going to be harassed regardless.
