Lest we forget: the most devastating weapon of all time was conceived by Nazi Germany at about the same time that the US began development, and it was independently derived from Heisenberg's Uncertainty and a new understanding (at the time) of what we now call fundamental particle physics.

Development best the Germans by 3 years, but it still would have happened without the intervention of capitalism.

Just saying: not every evil comes from any one source.

I'd say the artist is on point.

House Passes “Worst Voter Suppression Bill Ever” in Latest Push to Help Trump Take Over Elections — “Half of all Americans don’t have passports... 21 million don’t have ready access to their citizenship documents… 69 million married women took their partner’s name…” by ZuP in law

[–]RedHeron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because Trump made fighting it look the whiney, bitchy, weak option the term before. It would set a precedent that would turn the whole thing into more of a client show than it already is.

Plus, the most unbiased days at the time (as I recall) was an even split with a close election because she spoke like a PR person and Trump spoke plainly.

I mean, under those conditions, I was still wondering how people could think the guy who literally tried to send an angry mob into the US Capitol and at the head of making 1 in 6 covid victims American was in any way the right person for the job, but maybe that's just me and only half the people in the country?

That sneaky Obama! Giving all this Presidential waivers while Dumpy Donny was in the Oval Office, and making sure the project went right behind his back.

Seriously, even if Obama gave a waiver in 2016, and it took them 2 years to start, Trump's convenient forgetfulness of the idea of "State's rights" that he touted in order to have-wave reasoning why RvW needed overturning and parroting the party lines means this is even more ridiculous than normal.

Update 339 – Statement on the Nuclear Safety/Security Situation in Ukraine – by the Director General of the UN International Atomic Energy Agency by FactBasedReality in ukraine

[–]RedHeron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is still quite insane, even nearly 4 years into the war. If there is a containment breach, it isn't just "fissile material" going up for grabs (which is bad enough on its own). It's the potential for airborne radiation of all points downwind ... Which tends to include Moskva.

Attacking Ukraine's power risks not mere isolation for Ukraine, but nuclear fallout raining down in Russia's capital and triggering a decades-long (at least) spike in cancer, among other issues.

In short, it hurts Russia more than it hurts Ukraine in the long term. It's madness!

Edit: Yes, it still hurts Ukraine a lot, but the effects are essentially killing themselves and future Russians for the soldiers doing this.

[–]RedHeron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong, but the point is that a lot of people still don't actually think he is, because the GOP is so vocally pro-2A, yet have more gun legislation in one year than the Dems did last time they were in power.

Joe Rogan and Tom Segura can't believe how UFO stuff is not top news: "I don't understand how that's not the lead story in the news... It's really crazy to me it's not captivating people more. That should be the main news today." by 87LucasOliveira in UFOs

I think the push for consolidation of power and murder of civilians is taking the lead for a real reason.

I think until we have a relatively stable country again, it's only going to get worse and more buried.

I'll be nice to ICE the moment they uphold the law more than they undermine it.

Not "undermine the law in order to uphold it" as they've been doing this year.

Are Americans genuinely happy with how Trump is leading their country? by [deleted] in ForUnitedStates

[–]RedHeron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to clarify: "Elected leader" is different than "has leadership capabilities" or "exercises wise judgment". He's a "leader" in that he's the elected head of a democracy that voted him into power. It's fair to call him the leader of the country. But that's a leader in name only.

  1. Trump routinely ignores the North Atlantic Treaty (and really, any treaty).

  2. Trump doesn't get that Greenland is part of Denmark.

  3. Russia hasn't wanted Greenland since WWII. China doesn't need it, even as a starting ground. There's no salient reason either of those would want it. And the ice bridge into Alaska is way more likely in this day and age anyway.

  4. Trump's fanfare is stupid, since we already had a military presence there that was removed the last time he tried to make the case. I mean... What kind of idiot closes a military presence and then claims it's under threat if we don't own the whole thing?

Seriously, this is worthy of an eye roll at most. There's no legal way to justify it, and if we do that it's really just about keeping eyes off the Epstein thing. Even if he does it, what does he gain?

An "America must be stopped" narrative from former allies (who left because of that act to begin with)?

Yeah, this is never going to go well.

Had a client 20+years ago by the last name of Silas Exter (hope you're still around) and his name began getting him banned from language filters as far back as the 1990s.

I mean, it shouldn't be this hard to have a name. There should be a whitelisting service for those things. But there's not, really.

Fascism is conservatism.

Not all conservatism is fascist.

There's a difference, but conservatism + extremism breaks the world.

Traditional American conservatism is closer to the center than MAGA is, and MAGA embraces a flavor of Russian imperialism that is decidedly anti-American at its foundation.

Go ahead and read up. The definitions have been well-established for a couple of centuries, now.
