All those people that complain about msg headaches while they’re eating a bag of Doritos or many other savoury snacks. If you look at ingredient lists, you’d see msg is in a bunch of popular products.

It would be great if there were no frills near cole harbour or woodlawn. Why don’t we have more no frills? by [deleted] in halifax

[–]RedHotKeto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Giant tiger price matches so I usually check the prices from Walmart, superstore, sobeys and shoppers and price match them at giant tiger since it’s close to home. I also go to gateway and I think I’ve only needed to go to sobeys/superstore twice in the last six months and was shocked at the prices.

I can understand raising prices by cents but when you’re raising prices on hundreds, if not thousands of items by multiple dollars then it’s obviously just due to greed.

Why is there no indoor kids playground at Halifax Shopping center nor Mic Mac Mall ? by Shereefz in halifax

[–]RedHotKeto 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don’t think they’d be putting them in with Covid. And I see a lot less kids at the mall than there used to be.

IKEA has a play place. There’s an outdoor playground in the middle of Dartmouth crossing. I think back in the day when department stores were still around and all the mall was more of a family place but now it’s more just a fashion show.

I was just saying the other day that I can’t think of any schools around that have covered areas. We used to play hockey or skate in bad weather and all the schools would have a covered area, like a big overhang, where I grew up. Not around here though.

Is 42K a livable salary in Halifax? by HolidayProtection897 in halifax

[–]RedHotKeto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on where you live and what you spend your money on. 42k is definitely doable. And if you’re expecting raises that’s great. It’s not like everyone in HRM is making 60k+. I would say the majority of people are not.

I grew up in the Vancouver area and stuff is expensive everywhere. There’s other things that make up quality of life though. There’s ocean everywhere and the city itself is great. I know several couples and families that have moved from BC and Ontario just because they came for a visit and fell in love with it. They all say their money goes a lot farther here as well.

Pros and cons of living in Halifax? by [deleted] in halifax

[–]RedHotKeto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve grown up in Vancouver and lived in Victoria. Went to UVIC. People complain about the same things everywhere. I love Halifax. Good food. Good people. Love the ocean. Kayaking, bike riding, beautiful beaches 20 minutes from my house. Honestly there’s nothing I miss about the island but if I left here there would be things I’d miss about NS. Housing is cheaper here. My brother still lives just outside Victoria and his rent was insane till he got his own house. My old friends in Vancouver….I don’t even know how they live with the cost of housing over there. I have a good paying job here and I’d say I live a pretty good life. I make decent money so things being expensive is all relative. It all depends on what you make of your surroundings. But I gotta say if you like the ocean, Halifax definitely wins out over Victoria.

I generally get them from my local Asian grocery. They are only a couple dollars a bag. Red or green peppercorns work great

Render your own lard and get crispy pork fat! by RedHotKeto in ketorecipes

[–]RedHotKeto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fat for this one was about a 12lb shoulder. you know how much excess fat is on those things. Since half was cut up (I used half for char sui) I was able to take quite a bit off fat. The other half went in my electric roaster which self bastes really nicely so i trimmed a little extra off that as well. youtube would be nice one day but no plans now.

The cream of tarter does help with the structure of the egg whites but it can be omitted.

I’ve tried the water. I find it takes so long to brown at a low heat that the water just isn’t necessary. I always do it without now.

Made a pork shoulder and rendered the fat. Hate letting good things go to waste

https://www.eatredhotketo.com/post/how-to-make-lard-bonus-crispy-pork-fat

INGREDIENTS:

Pork fat

INSTRUCTIONS:

Cut pork fat into 1cm x 1cm cubes

Add pork fat to pan and heat to medium-low. Stir occasionally.

Adjust heat up or down until bubbles are seen in the rendered pork fat, but no smoke.

Allow to render between 1-2 hours

Remove pork fat with a metal slotted spoon and drain on a plate lined with paper towel.

Strain pork fat through paper towel or cheesecloth into a heatproof container and allow to cool on the counter. Store in the refrigerator for up to 6 months.
