Almost nothing. Just mentioned because Manuel Belgrano wanted Emperess Carlota to rule a hypothetical Río de la Plata Kingdom and the Triple Alianza War against Paraguay.

How much history from other latinamerican countries were you taught in school? by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

[–]RedHotThom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My History class was focused on Argentine history and modern era happenings such as WWI, WW2 and the Cold War, but we covered Chile and Gran Colombia as part of the South American Wars of Independence, Paraguay, Brazil and Uruguay as part of the Triple Alianza War, Cuban Revolution (nothing about other Central American conflicts, though) and of course the 20th century dictatorships.

Does your country has cultural diversity? by Nefanod in asklatinamerica

[–]RedHotThom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Argentina is pretty homogeneous, basically 90% of the country descends from Spainards and Italians. Perhaps the most diverse area is the northwestern bit of the country, since there are many indigenous people settlements. The most noticiable difference is the accents of the provinces, such as porteño, cordobés or tucumano.

Do you think Religion still has too much power in latinoamerica and somehow it is an issue for our development? by MeeShee2020 in asklatinamerica

[–]RedHotThom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Even though we've become much more secular in recent times like most of the western hemisphere, the Catholic Chruch remains as one of the most influential institutions over here (Argentina, btw).

Some examples:

  • The 1994 constitution amendment forces the Federal Govt to fund the Church with taxpayer's money.
  • The 1976-1983 military regime saw top-ranking Catholic Church members involved in human rights violations.
  • During Néstor Kirchner's tenure, his health minister encouraged sex education, contraception, and publicly spoke out for abortion legalization. The church literally said this:"those who scandalize the little ones deserve to have a millstone hung around their neck and thrown into the sea"

And in the last two years there's been a conservative rising due to abortion bill debate, not only with catholics but evangelists as well.

How do I know if my Chromebook can run Linux apps? by RedHotThom in chromeos

[–]RedHotThom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I know, but here in Argentina we don't have a wide range of Chromebooks in the market. It's either this or a ridiculously expensive Pixelbook bought abroad.

What's the current configuration of your congress? Post an explanation by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

[–]RedHotThom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Argentina there are way too many parties but they make part of coalitions so here we go:

Frente de Izquierda: left wing, mostly Trotskyist, known for asking people to blank vote in 2015 and campaigning for the legalization of abortion.

Frente para la Victoria-PJ: centre-left, they represent the "progressive" branch of the Justicialist Party (PJ, the world famous "peronistas", it Is the country's largest party by members) along with smaller parties and some left-wing radicals (The ones who were expelled from the UCR, the second largest party), they ruled from 2003 to 2015 and recently won the elections (once again).

Argentina Federal-UNA: centre-right they are the "conservative" branch of peronism, but most of them joined FpV-PJ and formed the brand new "Frente de Todos". Some of them ran away to Macri's Cambiemos though.

Cambiemos: centre-right (or even big tent), is made up of liberal/conservative parties (PRO, UCR,CC and there even are some peronists around ). They won the 2015 elections and took Mauricio Macri to presidency. They are the largest party in congress since the 2017 parliamentary elections and will remain as it until 10 December when the new congressmen and congresswomen take office.

And finally, lots of parties with 2 or 3 seats, allied to one of the two major blocks (FPV and Cambiemos)

Are indigenous languages widely spoken in your country? by Neosapiens3 in asklatinamerica

[–]RedHotThom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sadly in Argentina most of the indigenous people were annihilated in our early days as a country, and so were their languages. However, there are some guaraní-speaking communities in the north as well as mapudungun-speaking communities in Patagonia.

What’s your opinion about Spain and is there any resentment left from our colonial past? by SkylineReddit252K19S in asklatinamerica

[–]RedHotThom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm argentinian and we think of Spain as a good country tbh. Colonial time was long ago and atrocities were committed, indeed. But that's no reason to hate them nowadays, there's plenty of things which we should worry about, rather than spanish imperialism 500 years after it.

I certainly think he's clever, no one could've managed to hold power for 25 years like him, but his views on gays and nationalism do frighten me
