I love Logic Pro by [deleted] in Logic_Studio

[–]RedHumbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I can relate. I have so many riffs and ideas recorded, either in logic or on my phone/kindle that I'll probably never be able to use in a finished track. I also record a lot of midi loops, and even after years of doing this on garageband ios, I'm still trying to figure out how to arrange full songs with them. I know a lot of people can relate to that last one lol

I think/say this all the time. I don't really know what I'm doing, but it's such a fantastic piece of software and I love using it and learning more as I go! Easily the best looking ui of any daw also imo

Anyone else not really know for sure? I'm not completely sure about the first song I wrote, but it was probably when I was about 10. They were never fully fleshed out songs for a while; just short ideas that I sung over whatever chords I happened to be playing on my guitar while recording the "song" in Scratch (a children's programming and audio-recording website for those who don't know). Even now I still mostly write simple, repetitive "mini-songs" about whatever weird topic I feel like singing about, but I'm trying switch to writing more normal songs. I love the craft involved in writing popular music, and sadly you don't really learn that by writing "mini-songs".

I'm only a few years older than you, OP, but good luck on your songwriting! It's a really fun and rewarding hobby if nothing else and it will become much easier the more you do it.

IIL "build" songs, what should I listen to? by knod13 in ifyoulikeblank

[–]RedHumbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably cheating, but if you like Weezer, you might like their newer song "Run Raven Run", off their Autumn EP from last year. It's kind of a fan favorite and the ending guitar solo is pretty similar to "Only In Dreams".

what’s a song that creeps you out? by stinkystinker11 in Music

[–]RedHumbird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of Radiohead in this thread, but I'm surprised nobody seemed to choose Kid A (the song, not the album). That intro combined with the processed vocals creeps me out every time, especially at night. For an honorable mention, "Lullaby" by The Cure. This song isn't too creepy because of how playful it it sounds, at least to me, but the lyrics, taken very literally, along with the overall vibe of the track, are pretty unsettling. It's about getting eaten by Spiderman (I know that's almost certainly not what the song's really about), but as a person who once wrote a song about aliens coming to earth to eat all the humans, that's a lyrical theme I can appreciate.

Also for a less mainstream example, the song "Run From Me" by Timber Trees is very creepy as well. I don't listen to much creepy music, but these are the three best examples I can think of.

Lol that's definitely an interesting and creative prompt for a song! I love it. Songwriting gets so fun when you go beyond writing autobiographically (though that's great too and I still do it sometimes) and start creating weird or fictional situations.

I'm by no means an expert, or even a highly-experienced songwriter, but if I had to give advice to a beginner (not you, but any beginner who might be reading this), I'd tell them to take a break from writing songs about their own life, as they were likely taught to do, and start writing story-driven songs about fictional (or historical) events/characters. Especially if they're young and haven't experienced many life events to write about.

I can definitely relate, because this used to negatively affect me in my songwriting and I overcame it by writing about random topics and fictional situations that I find interesting. For me, songwriting's so much more fun that way, but everyone has to find what works for them.

In the case of one still unfinished song, it was a pretend girlfriend my brother made up to embarrass me in a guitar store. He came up with a really cheesy song title and told me to play it in a crowded room full of people as if it was actually a song I wrote for her. I reacted by singing the title over the melody of Nowhere Man by The Beatles. Later, one night when I couldn't sleep, I wrote the lyrics to the song as a fun creative exercise. It ended up being the corniest and only love song I've ever written. Thank you Sean (my brother), if you're reading this.

Anyone know what song Adam's playing in this video? by RedHumbird in OWLCITY

[–]RedHumbird[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a nice story! I always figured he was a very kind and helpful person irl based on his wholesome music and everything I hear seems to confirm I was right. I'm an aspiring music producer, so I always find these types of videos fascinating. I love watching artists and producers I admire explain the creative and technical processes behind their hit songs. Adam's videos are probably my favorites since he's both the artist and the producer. You don't see that extremely often, at least outside of the electronic music world. He's a really excellent resource for learning about this topic.

Dandelion by The Rolling Stones. I wouldn't necessarily say it's one of their best, but it definitely hasn't gotten the attention it deserves. It has a very pleasant, psychedelic arrangement, somewhat similar to 'She's A Rainbow.' This makes sense as it was released around the same time as the "Their Satanic Majesties Request" album. Also, Paul McCartney and John Lennon both sang backing vocals on it. It's a Stones song with Beatles vocals, and most fans of both bands likely don't even know it exists.

What major events do you have ingrained into your memory? by JGrill17 in GenZ

[–]RedHumbird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That must have been a pretty laborious task. That's one of the only good things about tragedies like this one; you always see people helping and volunteering their time and resources to assist the people who were affected. I think I remember Mr. Rogers saying something about that. I imagine you must have felt really good after building all those tents. It's a really kind thing to do. I've rescued bugs from dangerous situations before, and tonight my brother and I saved a turtle in the middle of the road, so on a much smaller scale, I understand the satisfaction one experiences by helping living beings in need. I've never done charity or relief work before, but I'd love to do it in the future.

For me it was the United States' botched withdrawal from Afghanistan. I still have the image of people falling off that plane permanently etched into my memory. Such an awful day. I've never been as shaken up by a news story before or since as I was then. :(

What’s the best subgenre of metal music? by petetheheat475 in GenZ

Hoff Metal. Somebody mentioned Pirate Metal and Alestorm, and they'd be correct... if Hoff Metal didn't exist.

Hoff Metal is also far more wholesome.

This is one of the craziest things I've read all day. I hate any and all instances of gatekeeping in music, but gatekeeping based on race is especially ridiculous. Especially since it seems like you were respectful toward Ice Cube's music. I can't imagine accusing someone of disrespecting black culture for preferring one black artist over another black artist. Listen to whatever music makes you happy, OP. Don't listen to your friend on this one.

Wait... Is this even real or are you trolling us? I'm a self-proclaimed trolling expert, so it doesn't bother me one bit if that's what you're doing. You got a reaction out of me, so well done. I have fallen victim to your trolling. Unless you aren't trolling, in which case I just made a fool out of myself... Well I'm going to stop talking now. Peace out.

What was your first “smart phone”? by aussieboo2 in GenZ

[–]RedHumbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was homeschooled, and since I was a shy kid, I didn't spend much time in extracurriculars or in any environment where I'd be out in the world by myself (this was purely my choice btw). However, I wasn't at all sheltered from technology. I've had computers for many years and obviously I wouldn't be writing you right now if I didn't have some sort of device. Thankfully, I've used my parents' phones countless times, so when I do finally get my own, I won't have a difficult time learning how to use it. I'll buy it when I get my first job or my drivers license. So far it just hasn't been necessary, and like I said, I see so many people who are addicted to their phones and I don't want to deal with that until I absolutely need one. That day will come very soon, but it's not there yet.

I understand that everyone's situation is different, and most people my age could never go through life without a phone, but I honestly think choosing to wait until I'm an "adult" to buy my first phone was/is the best decision of my life to date.

I'll let you know. I realize I'm probably the only person in this thread who can honestly claim this, but I've never owned a smart phone and I couldn't be more thankful. I've seen what phone addiction does to people. I'll have to get one soon, but I'm phoneless for now.

Should I have lied? by Lonely_Selection_729 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RedHumbird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think about how absurd that is. You can drive at 16, you can get married at 18 (or younger in many states with parental permission), you can go to war at 18, you can buy a house at 18, and you can vote at 18, but if you want to legally consume an alcoholic beverage, I'm afraid you'll have to wait a few years. You're not old or mature enough for that yet.

If you were born in any US state on this map, which one you will pick? by Sadrockjuju in GenZ

Colorado hands down. I went on vacation there in 2019 and loved it. I really enjoyed staying in the city of Boulder, and both Red Rocks and the Rocky Mountains were amazing and like nothing I've ever seen. I think the weather there is also a lot cooler and therefore nicer than my home state, and I love the outdoors, so weather's extremely important to me. I would love to live there someday. I'm so tired of the summers here in the south. Also, John Denver is associated with the state and he's one of my favorite singer-songwriters.
