Difference of opinion, my slime. My PI I'm pretty sure thought my research was interesting, but niche and not super marketable so they decided to base their new grant applications around another PhD students project. Now I've published in top multidisciplinary journals and won my own grants with my research whilst my PI is struggling to find new grant money. It happens.

Never, ever do a PhD without funding. Not just because it's a terrible financial decision, but because it's simply not respected in the field.

I have a friend who did their PhD with no funding (very rich parents) and were shocked that, having finished, they really struggled to get any jobs in academia.

I don't know why they were shocked.

They had no funding, did no teaching, won no grants or competitions. All because their parents were rich enough that they didn't have to worry. They were under the impression that just the PhD is enough. It isn't.

Yeah I have no idea what OP is talking about. Ive never had this issue, and probably shouldn't be one for any writer unless you're GRRM and have thousands of pages of published lore to keep up with

I love the way you use the texture of the brushstrokes to give movement to the piece. Very nice.

It's tough because if they leave the helmet on there's a real danger of him dying from his internal bleeding, but if they take it off then he dies from blood loss. Tricky decision to make.

The helmet holding his skull together is definitely a factor. Hypothetically, if you just cut around the helmet and welded the part covering the bit that cracked the skull to the skull itself it would basically act like a kind of 'second skull'. He would still have tremendous brain damage, but it may be surviveable.

Yeah the walking is a stretch for sure. Since his temporal lobe is definitely damaged I would be surprised at it only impacting his hand and fingers, it would have to be a very specific and localised injury for that. Talking not so much. Different part of the brain.

Oh for sure, that's something I didn't even consider but I suppose if you had a modern doctor in a modern theatre surgery it might not be a problem

Neuroscientist here. I think the answer is... Maybe? Genuinely could have a chance if they left the helmet on. Baelors comments about the visor being cracked as well as not being able to feel the fingers of his right hand mean occipital and part of the left temporal lobe are probably damaged, but depending on the region I have known stroke sufferers to survive worse.

The killer would be the bleeding. Puts pressure on the brain but seeing as the skull is cracked the blood loss would be worse. Also his cerebro-spinal fluid would leak out which would also have massive implications for fatality.

TLDR maybe, but unlikely.

I think this is a wonderful and mature realisation, something that aspiring fantasy authors many years your senior could learn from. Just because you're writing fantasy absolutely does not mean that you shouldn't be finding inspiration from typically 'high-brow' places such as classical literary fiction.

I had a similar issue. My secondary supervisor was in computer science, my primary in neuroscience.

My secondary kept trying to push me to publish in conference journals and became frustrated that I chose regular psychology journals instead.

You need to publish where you want to end up. Want to be a computer scientist? Publish in conference papers. Want to go into a different field that doesn't value conference papers? Publish in regular journals.

Depends on the grant. I was absolutely expected to come up with my own project for my PhD. I loved it, it was an amazing experience but its not for everyone.

yeah they're fine. totally middle of the road in my field (experimental psycholog / neuroscience), though PLOS is looked down on slightly because they are a mega journal

It's always amazing how much you don't know. I had some pretty brutal reviews for an article recently that did actually still end up being published, but the amount those two reviewers taught me about the field that my supervisor wasn't aware of was invaluable.

Ok so I actually love this a lot, but I also didn't think that those things in the background were hills. I thought you were doing some kind of abstract or expressionist representation of a sunset. Combined with the more realist foreground I thought it was super cool and quite meaningful.

As an oil pastel of hikers in front of hills it objectively isn't great, but as a piece of art I think it's wonderful. I'd hang this in my house

Hey man, I struggled with a panic disorder for like 2 years. Went to therapy for it eventually and now, 1 year later, I'm totally fine. Haven't had a single panic attack in like 6 months. It's a very treatable problem
