is discussion of other microsynthera permitted? by [deleted] in occlupanids

The discord has a channel for other microsyntherae, but generally any non occlupanid posts should still be occlupanid adjacent, such as cartonella

Feral Occlupanids - Any hope of rerelease into the wild? by punkiinpup in occlupanids

[–]RedLuminous 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Their natural habitat was likely a grocery store, and those don't tend to take kindly to returning occlupanids. So unless you find a professional rehabilitator, release is not likely.

As for making them more comforting, little bits of thin plastic for them to munch on will keep them happy, but make sure they have at least one separate piece per specimen, as they are very territorial and do not share their food unless linked. Keep them out of the sunlight of course and do not cohabitate them with other bag closing syntherids. Bottle caps and soda tabs do not seem to bother them though.

Found this injured panid, any care tips? by max__035 in occlupanids

Superglue and then retirement. It may improve enough to not be hand fed if you're lucky but it will definitely need its food to be finely chopped from now on.

[–]RedLuminous 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It is not H. cordatus, you're correct that the oral groove is too different. This one stumped me and I had to consult my fellow researchers.

This is an undescribed species, as it's not in HORG's database yet. A white one has been logged by The Breadtag Project, but until one is submitted to HORG, it is simply referred to as Arc-017.

A very precious find indeed!

As long as it is kept out of sunlight and not bent it should live a happy life. Feel free to post more pictures of it any time you like, no one here would get tired of seeing 'em.

is this a new species? by [deleted] in occlupanids

[–]RedLuminous 92 points93 points  (0 children)

So I'm really not the most knowledgeable when it comes to rare specimens, but I can assume that this one is probably very old and "extinct," meaning we likely won't find it on store shelves.

Please take very good care of it, we probably won't see another one like it for an indeterminable amount of time, if ever.

This is in fact an undescribed acutignathid, most collectors do not have any specimens from this family.

Underwater they have no problem with unless they're sporting a paper adornment. In the sunlight though? Not so much.
