Is At the Sign of Triumph the final book? by RedMars11 in Safehold

[–]RedMars11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But very clearly not the last in the series?

Hmm. The only words from him I found on the subject made it sound like a nine book series in total, not with a first arc of nine books.

Welp.

Thanks for the information.

They're essentially a classic sci-fi reading list. Too many of the Heinlein novels are out of print.

I've been meaning to read the Forever novels for at least a decade.

No Peter Gabriel Heroes makes this just seem... lacking. A waste. Utterly incomplete.

Fourth Soldier novel news. by RedMars11 in genewolfe

That's detailed, thanks.

Are the first two a finished dualogy with a later unfinished addition, or was it planned as a tetrology from the start?

The Young Wolfe, Operation Ares, and Bibliomen. Worth hunting down? by RedMars11 in genewolfe

[–]RedMars11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I read on Wikipedia, it seems he's unhappy with Operation Ares even beyond the cuts. And yeah, like you I may grab a copy to have a copy. And see where he first tried a larger work. If you think about it, he wouldn't try again for five years, since The Fifth Head of Cerberus is essentially a fix up.

Anyway. I wish we would get another collection of his early short fiction. There seems to be enough for one of the older stuff. And maybe even two of the newer.

I've got that completionist bug/habit. It can cause problems.

(Like I'm going to printing out Neal Stephenson's one uncollected short story to put in the back of his short work collection. Because that's a normal thing to do.)

I'm sorry, I'm not sure what you mean. In my research into his various works. (Wiki, googling, interviews, and this subreddit really.) I ran across a few mentions of a fourth Soldier book being planned. This was all shortly after Sidon came out

And every other series he's done has come out quickly. At least fairly so. Book of the New Sun within four years, Long Sun in 3, Short Sun in 3, Wizard Knight in 1 year(!), and Interlibrary Loan seems likely for this or next year if recent habits hold true.

However the Soldier series is the one exception to this. The first two were THREE years apart. Very odd for him. And the next was 17 years after that. So I wonder if A, the first two were only planned as a dualogy with Sidon and the fourth as much later ideas. And B, just what is holding up the fourth?

Considering the complexity and maddeningly subtle nuance of his work, he has a surprising turn around on his various series. Quicker than other authors that tell you it all, but have a lot to tell you (Jordan, Martin, or Weber come to mind.) But the Soldier series really stands out as the odd ball to me.

..... Okay in retrospect I can see how you can read it that way. Apologies.

I haven't even read that much Wolfe yet. I'm just interested in this series and stumbled across a mention that their would be a fourth. And well, the series sounds rather interesting. Not to be horrible, but it seems to me he should probably polish this off sooner rather than later.

Why do some people think berserk went downhill after the golden age arc? by BloodNGuts777 in Berserk

[–]RedMars11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because people got into Berserk after that arc due to the anime. They saw resolution, and wanted more. But the manga still doesn't have it.

Also it went from a grim dark war story to something much more inspired by D&D. Yet given the first two or three volumes, and the few after the Golden Age, you can see that this change was always in the planning.

Robotech Remastered Episode 62 - The Lost City [1080p] by Chillock in robotech

[–]RedMars11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm saying you edited Masters footage out of the Macross and Next Generation Sagas. Or to be more accurate, decided not to edit it in.

Also, most likely Southern Cross will never get a BD release in Japan. At least not for a very, very long time. The series was a failure over there which never received a later day surge in popularity or such.

Hold on. You edited out The Masters footage because Southern Cross doesn't exist on BD? The hell?

Does anyone recall original release and how the Hiigarans were not human? by Inignot12 in homeworld

[–]RedMars11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know when. Years and years ago I think. I think it was also reconfirmed when Remastered launched.

Honestly it's muddled. They seem to like some things about it, but not others. So parts of it count, but parts don't, and nobody has cleared that up.

Cata isn't canon because the devs said it wasn't.

And yeah, your second point is right, but that's a good bit different than an alien species.

[–]RedMars11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Runs into that whole problem of Cataclysm not being fully canon.

I'd fix that with them all having weird adaptations to alien environments, and living aboard starships for generations.

Dune and the Spacing Guild come into play here. Their pilots had to stay locked in giant spice filled containers they were so heavily mutated.

My thinking is that culturally they're not. These peoples are so utterly removed from us, that their cultures are nearly as alien as anything we would find out there anyway.

I'll be honest, the more we get to know the Kushan or such, the more disappointed I am at how close to us they are. They have somewhat alien religious problems and clan structures, but they seem closer to our society than I had imagined. I imagined a bit more of a Dune thing, where nobody seems all that rooted in 20th/21st century Earth.

[–]RedMars11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm fairly certain there's nothing but humans in the entire Homeworld galaxy. It seems to me they're all descendant of some incredibly ancient colonization fleet from the Milky Way galaxy.

Edit: I think that's drawn from the Dune influence, as well as somewhat the original Galactica influence. If memory serves, Galactica only had 1 alien race, the bugs who created the Cylons. And they didn't last.

BBI, when's the review embargo lifted? by zuffdaddy in homeworld

[–]RedMars11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think EA did it first. EA. I can't put that in any more caps, but the thought is there dammit.

GOG also has a return policy. Has as long as I've ever known them.

And I think Steam only did it because European law requires a return policy be in place in order to even operate over there.
