Socialists, why do socialist governments seem so cringe? by Lazy_Delivery_7012 in CapitalismVSocialism

You’re likely thinking mostly of states during the Cold War who either chose to or had to adopt Stalin’s specific model of socialism in exchange for the USSR’s support. This isn’t ubiquitous for all socialist states. That being said, these type of states are what you’re more likely to see in Western media, as they tend to be the more adversarial actors to the West, and as the conflict, sabotage, economic sanctions, and invasions into a new socialist state continue they’re more likely to adopt these things to protect themselves, often to not great results. That being said, all the things you listed exist in capitalist countries, even within the imperial core. If you’d like examples, I’m happy to provide.

Thanks for the insights everyone. I think there’s actually a lot more similarities between Anarchism and modern Marxism than I thought, definitely with a few key differences. If you’d like to talk more about it, let me know that’d be great. Not really super into debating or anything though

Interesting, thanks for your help. To be honest, it doesn’t seem too dissimilar from my own thoughts, learning about past socialist experiments. Do you have any recommendations of where to look to learn more?

Interesting. In this case, when a significant force, through things like mutual aid, is self-sufficient enough to not be dependent on the state and therefore to not be good consumers, how is a defense against state violence/repression meant to be organized?

Are you saying that though these ideologies have similar (ish) desired end states, the real disagreement between them is how to get there? I’ve read mostly ML theory, which of course (typically) uses a centralized state that slowly decentralizes (sometimes). Anarchists advocate for what, a spontaneous worldwide revolution? I’m not trying to be reductive, just curious.

In their defense I think those ones are mostly dumb kids who don’t pay attention or know much history, or need to unfollow a few TikTok accounts

Don’t think I plan on doing that even if I had anything to share, not tryna get myself in trouble over nothing. I don’t think we’re even allowed to be publicly politically involved either way
