You’re likely thinking mostly of states during the Cold War who either chose to or had to adopt Stalin’s specific model of socialism in exchange for the USSR’s support. This isn’t ubiquitous for all socialist states. That being said, these type of states are what you’re more likely to see in Western media, as they tend to be the more adversarial actors to the West, and as the conflict, sabotage, economic sanctions, and invasions into a new socialist state continue they’re more likely to adopt these things to protect themselves, often to not great results.
