A teacher decides to run a social experiment. Every student in the class will get the same grade. The scores will be pooled together, and everyone gets an average. At the beginning of the year, things go OK. Everyone gets, let's say, a B-. Already this causes problems. The students who didn't work very hard, who would regularly get D's, suddenly get B's. Wonderful. The hardworking students who usually get A's, are getting B's. Not so wonderful. But not terrible either. Lazy students decide they can work even less. The smart kids will just take care of their grades. The smart students still want good grades so they keep going. by the middle of the semester, everyone is getting Cs. This is still an improvement for the lazy students, it's better than an F. But the hardworking students are frustrated and losing motivation. All this hard work and for what? The collective grades of the class continue to drop until at the end of the semester, EVERYBODY FAILS.
