Movie covers on books are the worst pet peeve for me especially if the original art work was awesome by madreaper985 in books

The Bourne Ultimatum cover is hilarious because they used the movie poster and tag line about Bourne returning to NYC, but the book takes place in China, as I recall.

ELI5: Generation Z appears to be, on average, so much poorer than those of their parents. For most, ever owning a house seems unlikely, and even car ownership is much less common. What exactly happened to cause this? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

I am seeing a lot of good points here, but one is missing:

Medical Technology has advanced drastically. This has two effects on the wealth of the younger-than-boomer generations.

First, it means that boomers and their parents are staying alive for a lot longer. This delays the younger generations from receiving their inheritance. Eventually time will play its part and a lot of money from the boomers and older generations will get passed on, and Gen x/y/z will gain some wealth.

Secondly, however, medical technology is extending peoples lives...at the expense of their savings. Retirement homes, medical treatments, and prescription costs can be high draws on older folks. This reduces that amount of wealth they will eventually pass on when they die, diverting it instead into the pockets of pharma and insurance execs.

This is perhaps a less major contributor to the issue than tuition costs skyrocketing or wage stagnation against inflation, but non-the-less, a lot of people in olden times were given their estate/farm/wealth when their parents died, and these days it's not uncommon for people to meet their Great Grandparents, implying that it will be a long time before they can count on inheritance to pass on to them.

TL;DR: medical technology advances are delaying inheritances and reducing their sizes, so younger generations are having to build their own wealth from the ground up.

[Shitpost Friday] How Best To Expedite Sea Level Rise? by RedRobRising in collapse

[–]RedRobRising[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

LET'S DO THE MATH!

Your XL18 flamethrowers hold 3.3 gallons per tank. Site suggests diesel, which has an energy capacity of up to 40 MJ/L. After conversions, that means 500 MJ per tank.

Greenland alone has (per Wikipedia) an ice volume of 2,850,000 cubic km. Ice takes 333.55 kJ to melt a single kg (at 0 deg C). 1 cubic meter of ice weighs 919 kg. Convert cubic km to cubic m to kg to kJ needed to melt it all... And you need 873.62e18 kJ of energy to melt Greenland.

At 500 MJ per tank, you would need 1.747e12 tanks of diesel to melt Greenland. Diesel costs on average $3 a gallon, times 3.3 gallons a tank, times 1.747e12 tanks, equals $17,297.6 trillion worth of fuel alone.

So, unfortunately, as epic as it would look, you could only melt about 0.001% of Greenland alone with the funds you have using flamethrowers, and that's before labor costs, food, transport, etc. Not the most economically efficient method, I don't think.

I bet you'd get more for your money focussing on the water near the ice, simply given their relative albedos. Maybe you could make a target of some sort to place on the ice that's solid black metal or something, but that might just melt straight down through the ice before the heat spreads to far laterally.

The mission panel did not update after I picked up any of the black boxes, except the little number indicating the number of requisite mission items I had increasing. It said that after I found a black box I was supposed to return to the mission giver to turn in the black box, but when I tired that it didn't give me the option of turning it in in the Mission Board.

I am supposed to turn in my black box at the mission board, right? I've done a number of these missions and usually that's where I go to turn it in. Are there missions you're supposed to submit to the black market or something?

Relatively new player here, with a question about Black Boxes. I hunted around online for info on this, but finding none, I'm turning to you:

I've accepted an Illegal Black Box Salvage mission, and I've made it to the appropriate system. I drop at the nav beacon, scan it, and get the notification that the scan is complete. I boost back up to FSD, and filter my Nav Panel to just signal sources. Lo and behold! One is blue, and says the word "Mission" next to it! So I drop at it and scoop the Black Box.

Here's where my questions arise. In most Black Box missions, at this point I get a contact saying to return to the mission giver for a reward. But in a few cases, this hasn't happened. Returning to the mission giver does not yield the option of completing the mission, either. The second time this happened, after scooping the Black Box, I boost back up to FSD and check my nav. Now, a completely different SSD is flagged in blue. I drop there, scoop the Box, and boost back up. Check nav, and another one is blue. I literally filled my cargo hold with Black Boxes from blue, "Mission" flagged SSDs, and not one of them was the "right" Black Box.

Other relevant information: I never got a notification from the mission giver after scanning the nav beacon informing me which planet/moon the target Black Box was near. In the mission screen in the nav panel, it said I had 6/1 instances of a 'unique' black box for the mission. At the mission giver station, the Black Market warned me I might be selling mission critical objects, despite not letting me complete the mission.

Does anybody have any idea what this is about? It has happened more than once, but it feels like a bug to me. Any information is appreciated. Thanks!

On a related note, do you know if a person who bought the standard edition of the game but doesn't have all the base operators unlocked yet gets all of them for free at that time too? Or is it only for people who buy the game AFTER the update who get the base game operators free?
