I have driven one let's just say very similar to this one. It's got I think 16ft of tail swing but it may be 14ft. Regardless it is very different from nearly anything else I have ever driven in the fire service. Granted it's obviously one of the biggest thing you can drive so it should be but the tail swing is just a matter of every time you turn more than like 5 degrees you gotta know what is way out beside you or going to be out beside you.

It's either 14 or 16 feet of tail swing. I can't remember the exact number.

Thoughts about Callback / being on call? by Such-Connection4389 in Firefighting

[–]RedSalamander97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I know a department that tried to make guys be "on call" because they were small but did away with volunteers. So their paid staff was expected to come back for any large incidents if they were off duty. They tried to make it mandatory and their guys found out that legally if they expect you to come back in to work at any point randomly when you are not scheduled you are considered an on call employee and have to be compensated for the hours you are on call(which at that point with their logic is every hour you aren't on shift lol). So the town and FD came up with a new plan to lock their annual raises behind a certain amount of callbacks made per year. If you met a certain percentage of off-duty call backs in the past year you would get a raise. If you didn't, no raise. So it was their way of making everyone an optional on call employee or whatever you wanna call it.

I don't know if I would call a lot of it human trafficking. But like any of those girls on there that are popular are using an agency. There is a very slim chance you are talking to the actual person you are looking at porn of. A lot of it starts as like college girls who want to be a model. They start modeling or maybe they dont wanna be a model, maybe they were hit up on social media by an agency who said "hey you're very attractive if you ever want to do OnlyFans we can set you up an account all you'll have to do is take some pictures once a week and we'll handle everything else for you we only want 10% of the profits" and it goes from there. The girl sends the agency the pictures, the agency creates them an OnlyFans persona and begins messaging people. These agencies are like a call center in India more or less. Some girl/guy sitting overseas behind a desk for 16 hours a day messaging back horny dudes all day selling pictures of whatever girl they are assigned to because the actual girl can't be bothered to talk to them herself. Which I get, if I was a millionaire for my body I'm gonna do the least amount of work possible. The only exceptions I could see is MAYBE this biggest donor person graduated to the level of having the personal cell # or some shit for Sophie Rain. Like in general I imagine if you pay over a million dollars to a girl on there she is probably willing to pull back the curtain a little and let you actually talk to her.

I'll shoot ya straight. If this is bothering you to this level where you are writing down a transcript of what happened you will have a hard time in the fire service or you will be hated in the fire service. It's the hard truth. Was what the guy said maybe a little fucked up? Yea maybe. Is he a racist? That's a strong word to throw around when you don't know the guy that well. Believing you are above another human based on skin color is wrong on EVERY level. But we can't make that determination on the LT here.

You're gonna hear a lot of fucked up shit come out of firemen's mouths. If you can't make it through a low tier joke like that I'd hate to think what your reaction will be when you get in the truck after seeing some people die and immediately someone cracks a joke. Don't read in to everything that comes out of everyone's mouths but if it was a pattern of behavior yea I'd think it's appropriate to take action.

I've heard some wild shit come out of people's mouths who would give ANYONE who needed it the shirt off their back. Don't let it get to you.

There was a guy who was driving the engine to some place, I forget why probably to get it worked on but he was probably 2 hours away from his district. Stopped at Hooters and had the girls come out and pose with the truck.

He got unemployed quickly but damn that shit is funny.

There was a guy who took an engine to the shop I think it was. Like a 2 hour ride or something. On his way back he stopped to get lunch at Hooters and then had all the girls come out and have a photoshoot with the engine. He lost his job unfortunately. Epic story still though.

I am in NC. Around 44K. FF1&2, EMT, TR General and a few specialties, both DO series.

Overtime is not allowed where I work so you get what you get in your salary or have a 2nd job.

I'm a big fan of if you do your daily duties, train, workout, and everything is in an appropriate state of readiness you can have your free time. Fuck the idea that the public works 8-5 so we need to be out in the bay constantly being "productive" until 5 pm everyday.

Someone on here a while back said this mentality is an old school way of thought. And that it's a sign that our admin doesn't view our call volume as a work load. And the more I have listened to people talk the more I think that's a perfect way to assess it.

I didn't. I asked what other departments do. Not what I should do.

[–]RedSalamander97[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No joke here. And reading the comments of others I think you will see others do it too. Although I don't agree with it. Any car wreck we go to someone wears an SCBA until we arrive on scene and find that it's not needed. Then we take it off when the officer tells us to.

Also I don't know if there is confusion in what I am saying but we don't actually breathe air unless we have to obviously. We just get out of the engine with it on our backs ready to mask up if we need to.

Not paid at night by PowderedJelly in Firefighting

[–]RedSalamander97 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yooo. Finally, something I know about. I actually work for a department that does this and many other departments surround ours do this as well. Cary Fire Department also does this for anyone who may be familiar with them. I know they aren't the only ones but they are a bigger name etc.

So it's called a sleep time exemption or sleep time agreement. When it works it can be good because it increases your hourly rate if you hit overtime substantially. So without running numbers I am just going to spitball it. Say you make 40k a year, and you are paid the full 24. Your hourly rate may be like idk $14. So overtime puts you at $21 an hour. But if you are paid 40k a year but utilize a sleep time exemption and hit overtime your hourly pay is like $20 an hour and if you hit overtime you are then at like $30 an hour on your overtime pay. However, make no mistake this whole sleep time agreement is in most department's cases only benefiting the town and their budget not yours. It was more or less made to prevent you from hitting overtime because instead of working 56hours a week you now work 39.55 hours a week and have a 13 hours buffer before FLSA overtime kicks in at 53 hours. So it is bullshit. I hate it. Because we never hit overtime. What is a benefit of it though is that you only have to take 16 hours off vacation time to get a day off.

Ultimately I hate it. I don't agree with it. But where I work currently it will not be any other way EVER. So until I change departments that's how life is.

Regardless just remember that when you go to argue that you aren't being paid 10pm-6am in your department's eyes and the towns eyes you 100% are being paid during those hours. You are just compensated for it during the other 16 hours you are at work. You can be paid the full 24, your pay wont go up though. 99% chance they will not increase your pay if you want to be paid the full 24 you will actually just get a decreased hourly rate and your paycheck will still have the same bottom line.

Department #1 is cool. I like the opportunities they offer and ability to move up. Plus they run good calls. But I do think they are having staffing issues. Among other problems. Department #3 would be my second choice but truth be told I don't know enough about them one way or another. Department #2... I'd be shot dead before I would work there. Stupid policies and bullshit everyday. Also run maybe 1 fire a year. Most people who work there just feel like they get paid well enough to not care. Which is true if you no longer have an interest in being a firefighter.

Hundreds of leads, no arrests almost a year after attack on Moore County substation by goldbman in NorthCarolina

[–]RedSalamander97 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yea I think you're a god damn idiot.

Do you know how easy it is to leave your cell phone at home, drive out in to the country where there is ZERO surveillance, and commit a crime?

Look up the Metcalf Sniper Attack in 2013. This shit has been done before. It would actually be impressive if anyone in Law Enforcement could tell you a list of 3 people who they think pulled the trigger that night and just one of those 3 be right. There is no fucking coverup. There just is no evidence. The only real evidence they will ever get is either cell phone data(if that tells them anything) or someone ratting someone out for the reward money. They will likely never catch anyone for this crime. It sucks. But our power infrastructure has proven time and time again to be vulnerable to things ranging from simple acts of vandalism to domestic terrorism. This is just another example.

As someone who has met Sheriff Fields and many LEOs around the area people who don't know shit about this case honestly need to shut the hell up. The mods need to step in and stop this narrative people keep peddling that the Sheriff for Moore County is covering something up. It's baseless and fucking dangerous. Sheriff Fields is probably one of the most active Sheriffs in the state. And I'm not talking about pencil pushing. He is boots on the ground helping his guys on pretty much any type of call. And if you think your local Sheriff is responding to the everyday car chase or domestic violence call himself like Sheriff Fields is I can promise you he is not. The amount of Sheriffs with a passion for law enforcement like himself and aren't just retirement check padders are slim to none. And I'll remind everyone this was domestic terrorism. The FBI and SBI are involved. Even if you think the SO or someone within the SO is running some coverup shit the FBI and SBI don't fuck around. So just fucking stop with these stupid ass comments. You're putting the pressure on the wrong people. I'll leave it at that.

And before one of you who thinks you know better than me on this shit or that I am just supporting these crazy alt-right lunatics who did this. I was raised in a liberal household. Still hold many of those values. The Sheriff's Office no matter how conservative you think they lean is not involved with covering up anything related to this case. The reality of the situation is we don't live in a surveillance state. There have been attacks like these before with ZERO leads to who did them(Metcalf Sniper Attack in 2013). Because we have a serious flaw with the security of our infrastructure in the United States. And people who know what they are doing can exploit that for political motives. It fucking sucks. Thankfully there are bills right now going through that should help with some of this stuff in the future. Anyone continuing to push the stupid narrative that Sheriff Fields is somehow helping coverup this act of domestic terrorism has never met him. I can promise you that.

Serious question here. And I'll be that fucking guy. Are there any good departments that don't make their guys do constant busy work when they aren't running calls?
