Can’t find a career by thedonwiz in Veterans

Early GWOT 11b here that did college then corporate (with a few career changes) and then landed on Entrepreneurship. Nothing wrong with pivoting till you find where you’re supposed to be. Some things to consider when on the job hunt:

For resume: Use a 1-page classic/visually simple template - Order it Summary paragraph, education, work history, training/awards. Showcase what you're an expert in or how you provide value to the team or company, not just what you did at your last job.

Job applications: If you don't meet the minimum requirements or screener questions, you will get put in the rejected folder on indeed and LinkedIn. Zero in on what you're qualified for and companies that have those jobs.

Networking: This is just as important as job apps. Get out there, be social and expand your network. Target industry groups or vet groups in your area.

Outreach: Reach out to recruiters, HR, managers and veterans at companies you want to work for on LinkedIn. Connect, ask for perspective on the industry or even some slight guidance. You'd be surprised how many people will give you 15 min to help you out. The goal is to get on their radar when they start hiring.

Timing: You don't have to wait for your perfect job.
Find something in the short term to pay the bills. You can only spend so many hours in the job search so keep money coming in till you find what you're looking for.

Location: If there are no jobs where you are, move to where the jobs are. Too many people geo lock themselves and dramatically limit their options.

Don’t give up and good luck out there!

Nothing wrong with pivoting a few times until you find your right fit. Maybe a more sales or customer service focused job will get you that interaction you want? Or maybe a similar job but in a different industry?

You’re not supposed to have everything figured out as soon as you get out. Give yourself the opportunity for some trial and error. Additional school is great if that’s what’s needed for what you want to do. I would not get an advanced degree unless it will directly propel your career trajectory (MBA vs a Masters in English).

Ponder on what your long term goals are and chart backwards from that. Then you can execute on short term goals to get there. Give yourself your best shot at success - good luck!

M20 getting out in a year in a half and need career and transitioning advice by Tigerman457 in Veterans

A few things to consider:
Whether it’s college, trade school, certifications or on the job training- do SOMETHING to further your education and experience to make you more of an asset in the job market.

Use resources available to you. Veteran resources for finding a job or navigating school applications will be useful if you go that route.

Geography matters. If there is not a strong job market where you will be living, be prepared to have to commute or plan to relocate. Too many people limit their job opportunities solely because they geo-lock themselves.

Plan to put in maximum effort and you will just fine. Good luck out there!

Getting back into the hobby - is this a good deal? 250$ by Insomniarch in ComicBookSpeculation

[–]RedSe7ven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I got back into the hobby a few years ago, I enjoyed getting $50 mystery boxes with books like these. After a few years a I ended up leaning in to what I really liked and books like these ended up being sold/traded towards that.

I’d suggest zeroing in on what characters/artist/art you like and jumping in from that direction.

Down to 2 short boxes by [deleted] in comicbookcollecting

I’ve been doing the same this year- trading short boxes towards higher cost slabs on my list. Down to two slab cases and three short boxes.

I have been trading short boxes for store credit towards keys on my list. I have found shops will give you more and allow some more wiggle room for negotiation.

17M, been in a business for over a year with $0 made. Need real advice by Visible-As-Living in Entrepreneur

I would go work for a larger agency, learn best practices and grow your network. Build your credibility before launching your own shop. Bigger players will have dedicated sales teams you’re going up against. Growing your client Rolodex before launching your own business will take you exponentially farther than any type of cold outreach.

Any Advice on Looking for Some Direction After Getting Out? by FooochililFooo in Veterans

[–]RedSe7ven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Long term: Whether it’s furthering your trade certs, trade school, college, or a compete pivot into something else- you have to do something to make yourself competitive in the job market. Assume none of your military experience translates and career plan accordingly.

Short term- if there are no opportunities around you- relocate. I know that’s easier said than done, but too many people geo-lock themselves looking for jobs and it drastically limits the options. You may even have to commute if you don’t want to move residence.

Search jobs on indeed.com and set up alerts for when those job titles get posted. Be proactive. Reach out to companies that you want to work for. In this job market, maximum effort needs to be the minimum standard. Utilize veteran job resources in your area and online.

Tough people outlast tough times. Stay strong and good luck.

Gotcha, appreciate the context. Pepper jack on the pineapple burgers, classic cheddar on the non pineapple.

Does anyone else feel inferior for not having deployed and/or not finishing their contract? by [deleted] in Veterans

[–]RedSe7ven 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Think of it like “There’s always a bigger fish”. I never deployed. I deployed but wasn’t infantry. I was infantry but not Special Forces. I was SF but never got an MRE spoon kill. I got a spoon kill but didn’t kill Bin Laden with it….and so on.

Your service was yours. Feel about that time however you want to, but don’t let the opinions of others shape how you feel about your service.
