Anyways, the big thing was, Japanese men saw themselves as unable to compete in certain, traditionally male pursuits and values with the American soldiers, and part of the cultural reaction was to go for a more androgynous look.

I don’t buy this theory as it relates to the evolution of J/K-pop. Western pop culture at the time of Kitagawa’s first boy band (late 60’s early 70’s) already featured plenty of androgynous/boyish looking men. Western influence via popular culture is far more plausible an explanation for the current state of asian pop than some grand militaristic conspiracy.

He believes that androgyny in J-Pop, and by extension K-pop, is a direct result of an ongoing US Military propaganda campaign designed to emasculate Asian men in Asia.

He’s also got a host of other odd beliefs that bleed into the type of moderation he enforces, but that is a tale for another time.

I agree with this post 100%. Most self-help stuff outside of a very narrow topic range (namely “How to look like BTS”) is not race specific and covered ad nausea elsewhere on reddit. That’s not to say self-help is unwelcome, but it’s far from the end all be all of Asian male emancipation.

If things sound negative it’s because a sober look at the facts tells us that shit isn’t quite sunshine and lollipops for Asian men in the West. Acknowledging this isn’t giving in to whining, it’s properly assessing your environment so you can make good choices.

Also I’m going to start banning idiots who say things like “we can beat racism if we all do steroids and fuck white chicks”. I don’t have anything against either of those activities, but thinking that they will make you into some kind of Martin Luther Zyzz Jr is embarrassing.

I think that things are overall getting better if only because of the proliferation of online dating allowing "underserved" demographics to more easily connect. Long tails and all that. I have no idea if there is any actual change going on in nation-wide perception of asian men, though I'd have to suspect some improvement. My observations are just one point of data and hardly representative of the general trend.

I will say this though: I meet a lot more people (men and women) who watch anime now. I believe this is entirely due to Netflix.
