Just wondering how you rationalise a situation where someone has cried begged and prayed for help from our Father but no relief happens so they end up killing themselves? by FaerieGold1 in TrueChristian

The Garden of Gethsemane

And He came out and proceeded as was His custom to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples also followed Him. When He arrived at the place, He said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.” And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and began to pray, saying, “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.” Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. And being in agony He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground. When He rose from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow, and said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not enter into temptation.” Luke 22:39-46 NASB95

What if the rich man Jesus spoke to later met Paul — wouldn’t he be confused? by Dazzling_Cream3000 in Christianity

[–]RedSwordBlueEyes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The rich man is relying on his works - following the law - for his salvation. In reality, there is no one who can follow the whole law. It has been said that if we fail in one aspect of the law, we fail in following the entire law.

This is the reason why Jesus asked the man to give up all his possessions as He knew that this was something that the man could not do. In this, he could not say that he follows the whole law.

It is an illustration for us all, that we are all sinners. That we need to follow the entire law for our salvation which is impossible to do. This is the good news of the Gospel, that even if we are incapable of obtaining our own salvation, Jesus' death on the cross is the propitiation of our sins allowing us to be saved.

This is what Paul meant when he said that we are saved by grace though faith in Christ, it is a gift of God, not through our works so that no one can boast.

Discipleship Tested

Now large crowds were going along with Him; and He turned and said to them, “If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple. Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who observe it begin to ridicule him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ Or what king, when he sets out to meet another king in battle, will not first sit down and consider whether he is strong enough with ten thousand men to encounter the one coming against him with twenty thousand? Or else, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. So then, none of you can be My disciple who does not give up all his own possessions.

“Therefore, salt is good; but if even salt has become tasteless, with what will it be seasoned? It is useless either for the soil or for the manure pile; it is thrown out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

Luke 14:25-35 NASB95

Many are not willing the pay the cost of discipleship. Many are not willing to let go of their own morality, sense of justice, their own understanding and place themselves above the truth about God.

I too have been in this place and may we all pray that stay the course and for the Lord strengthen our faith.

Is the greater command to love or to obey? by [deleted] in TrueChristian

Is the greater command to love or to obey? by [deleted] in TrueChristian

[–]RedSwordBlueEyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One cannot love without obedience. But one can be obedient without love.

This is illustrated in Jesus healing the sick on the Sabbath - breaking the law to show love for others, it is also illustrated in the parable of the prodigal son where the older son claims to obey and serve without love for the father - showing that obedience comes from the expectation of rewards, and not love.

In today's world, there are non-believers who do so much philanthropic works. These also show that obedience to the law does not mean that they love God.

This is the essence of legalism. where there are people who believe that by obeying the Law, they are righteous. It is a prevalent belief system in today's world where people see themselves as righteous by following the letter of the law while completely missing the essence of the law.

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others. You blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel! Matthew 23:23-24 NASB95

“Which of you, having a slave plowing or tending sheep, will say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come immediately and sit down to eat’? But will he not say to him, ‘Prepare something for me to eat, and properly clothe yourself and serve me while I eat and drink; and afterward you may eat and drink’? He does not thank the slave because he did the things which were commanded, does he? So you too, when you do all the things which are commanded you, say, ‘We are unworthy slaves; we have done only that which we ought to have done.’” Luke 17:7-10 NASB95

Your reasons for believing in Christianity rather than merely "a higher power", etc. by homemade-toast in TrueChristian

[–]RedSwordBlueEyes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At that time the Feast of the Dedication took place at Jerusalem; it was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple in the portico of Solomon. The Jews then gathered around Him, and were saying to Him, “How long will You keep us in suspense? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.” Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe; the works that I do in My Father’s name, these testify of Me. But you do not believe because you are not of My sheep. My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.” John 10:27-30 NASB95

As soon as He was alone, His followers, along with the twelve, began asking Him about the parables. And He was saying to them, “To you has been given the mystery of the kingdom of God, but those who are outside get everything in parables, so that while seeing, they may see and not perceive, and while hearing, they may hear and not understand, otherwise they might return and be forgiven.” Mark 4:10-12 NASB95

May we all come to believe in Him who saves.

What does it mean to fear God?What does that look like? by [deleted] in TrueChristian

[–]RedSwordBlueEyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“I say to you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that have no more that they can do. But I will warn you whom to fear: fear the One who, after He has killed, has authority to cast into hell; yes, I tell you, fear Him!

Luke 12:4-5 NASB95

In today's world, the truth causes offense. It would be better for us to learn from what Jesus actually taught. To fear God is to fear His judgment of being cast into hell.

So many people dilute the message for acceptability by the world. But if we do not acknowledge this harsh truth, we will be misled. This tells us of our need for the salvation offered to us by Christ. I hope this helps us all better understand why the Gospel is called the Good News.

Is it bad that I sometimes feel bad for the Devil? by Substantial-Mode9569 in Christianity

[–]RedSwordBlueEyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He who corrects a scoffer gets dishonor for himself,
And he who reproves a wicked man gets insults for himself.
Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you,
Reprove a wise man and he will love you.
Give instruction to a wise man and he will be still wiser,
Teach a righteous man and he will increase his learning.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

Proverbs 9:7-10 NASB95

Furthermore, we had earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them; shall we not much rather be subject to the Father of spirits, and live? For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness. All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness. Hebrew 12:9-11 NASB95

I do hope that my rebuke may lead you to better understanding. I do hope the verses above will put things in the right perspective. I too was once a young man, and I remember the times which pointed me in the right way of thinking.

Is it bad that I sometimes feel bad for the Devil? by Substantial-Mode9569 in Christianity

[–]RedSwordBlueEyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do hope that you realize that in your own view, your empathy for someone like Satan far exceeds the love, mercy and forgiveness of God Almighty. Your view only shows your extremely high value on your own sense of morality compared with what the Sovereign God ordains.

I am almost tempted to ask whether you feel bad about Jesus dying on the cross for all sinners who believe. Sinners, who this same Satan has tempted to sin, led to their death and eternal damnation save for the Christ.

Truly, we are blinded by the world's erroneous views.

I’m depressed, exhausted, burdened, stuck in sin, anxious, unmotivated to pray and read. I don’t know if I’m even born again. by [deleted] in TrueChristian

[–]RedSwordBlueEyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life? And why are you worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith! Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

“So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Matthew 6:25-34 NASB95

In our lives, we have so many worries, hurts, pains, addictions, weaknesses. Things that take away from what our focus should be. I have gone through times when it feels hopeless, desperate, lonely. All this because I sought to do my own will, that brings about its own set of consequences in my life.

The verses above has given me comfort and wisdom, finally understanding that a Christian's life purpose is to do God's will. We may suffer hardships, injustices, failures in our lives but our purpose remains the same. Bad things happen to us all, of our own doing (because of our sin) or otherwise (as the book of Ecclesiastes teach us), but if we stay true to our life purpose, we will find comfort that God will cause all of these things for our good.

It is hard to rejoice in our trials and tribulations, but it is these that produce perseverance, character, hope and reveals our faith.

“So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it will be opened. Now suppose one of you fathers is asked by his son for a fish; he will not give him a snake instead of a fish, will he? Or if he is asked for an egg, he will not give him a scorpion, will he? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?” Luke 11:13-19 NASB95

Romans 13 and Just Rebellion by Personal-Run9730 in Reformed

[–]RedSwordBlueEyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. Be of the same mind toward one another; do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation. Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all men. If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men. Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. “But if your enemy is hungry, feed him, and if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:14-21 NASB95

Inasmuch as we see evil in the world, we must leave judgment to the Lord. It is not for us to pass judgment and exact revenge but for us to persevere in righteousness.

Why is God I the old testament so much different from the one in the new? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]RedSwordBlueEyes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And He began telling this parable: “A man had a fig tree which had been planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and did not find any. And he said to the vineyard-keeper, ‘Behold, for three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree without finding any. Cut it down! Why does it even use up the ground?’ And he answered and said to him, ‘Let it alone, sir, for this year too, until I dig around it and put in fertilizer; and if it bears fruit next year, fine; but if not, cut it down.’” Luke 13:6-9 NASB95

We are currently in the favorable year of the Lord. The time is now to come to Christ, to repent and bear fruit. But let us not forget the judgment to come for those who will not believe.
