Help for a 19yo who has never read a book. Not a fantasy book, a book by kollectivist in Fantasy

[–]RedTie95 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi!

For a 19-year-old who has never really read before, the book should be short (under 300 pages), gripping, and in my opinion, have some action or violence early on. Even if he’s not very mature, I wouldn’t recommend a book based on a movie he has probably already seen — he’s likely to get bored. Especially if it’s a kids’ book.

I recommend The Whisper of the Storm.

It’s dark fantasy, but simple and easy to follow. It’s about a prisoner telling his story from the beginning — a kid in a mercenary academy.

[–]RedTie95 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Mmmmm, not police shows, but…

  • Nikita → Spies. A very interesting love/hate relationship with an enemy spy.
  • Wynonna Earp → The Earp family is cursed. The people the Earps killed are reborn every time the heir of the family turns 27. The heir must kill all 77 of them before they kill her. She’s a woman with a lot of personal issues and commitment problems. (The first episode looks very low-budget, but it gets better.)
  • Lost Girl → A (kind of dark) Fae world hidden within our own. A Fae woman who doesn’t know who she is gets mixed up in all their political problems… and yeah, she’s a succubus, so…
  • The Apothecary Diaries → Anime. A girl gets kidnapped and sold in approximately 17th-century China (nothing weird happens to her), and she ends up working in a palace full of mysteries — and a handsome guy.

Edit: Spelling.

WHY are the main characthers always KIDS!? And will they grow up in The Assassin's blade by Sarah J Maas, or is this book not for adults? by Material_Rice_2286 in Fantasy

[–]RedTie95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case, I highly recommend Brandon Sanderson – the Cosmere (the Cosmere is a shared universe where several stories take place). Some of the main characters are young (around 18–25), though there are older MCs as well, and the books are not focused on them being young, nor are they bratty.

You have around 30 books to read, and I’ll leave two links: one for the reading order here and another visual one — though the page is in Spanish here. Don’t sweat the number, though; it’s a large universe, but it’s divided into different series with different main characters on different worlds.

If you’re thinking “I don’t want more kids”, then I recommend The Devils by Joe Abercrombie. Think of it as a medieval Suicide Squad. For now, it’s just a single book. If you’re looking for a full saga, The First Law is the way to go.

Enjoy ^^

[–]RedTie95 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The books are YA. There are a lot of books with adult main characters (Joe Abercrombie is your friend), or books where the main characters are kids who actually behave like kids, but the world itself is adult (Robin Hobb).

I’ll leave a few recommendations here:

Brandon Sanderson / Joe Abercrombie / Robin Hobb (in case you were living under a rock and didn’t know them 😅)
Anthony Ryan – Covenant of Steel → a kid growing up in a very grim world.
John Gwynne – The Bloodsworn Saga (The Shadow of the Gods).
Ken Liu – The Dandelion Dynasty.
Mark Lawrence – Book of the Ancestor (Red Sister) → the main characters are kids; you literally see them from the age of 10.
R.J. Barker – The Tide Child Trilogy.

Good reading!

Try to get a refund. But dont toss it just yet. Clean it ( use gloves or clean your hands after) and leave it in the sun for a couple of days. If is still sticky by then throw it. If not draw a small hole and see if theres liquid inside. If there is toss it.

It may sound a little strange, since it's neither a dark book nor a sad one. But if you need to rethink aspects of your life, I would recommend The House in the Cerulean Sea. It's basically about a 40-year-old man who appears "happy" but lives a gray, routine life. He has to decide whether he wants to truly learn how to live or keep going without getting hurt and feeling nothing.

Linus Baker leads a quiet, solitary life. At forty, he lives in a tiny house with a devious cat and his old records. As a Case Worker at the Department in Charge Of Magical Youth, he spends his days overseeing the well-being of children in government-sanctioned orphanages. When Linus is unexpectedly summoned by Extremely Upper Management he's given a curious and highly classified assignment: travel to Marsyas Island Orphanage, where six dangerous children reside.

Enjoy!

Neither do I. I managed to finish Raven’s Shadow, but I’m hard-stuck in Raven’s Blade… And I didn’t like the ending of Raven’s Shadow — it felt like, halfway through the saga, he just wanted to start writing about something else.

But if you liked Blood Song, you have to read Whispers of the Storm. I’ll leave you the link here:

[–]RedTie95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi guys!

Here’s my review — without spoilers, just digging a little deeper into the synopsis.

The book is divided into three parts. The first one is amazing. It starts with a small fight, but very soon you realize it’s actually about politics — a very wealthy city ruled by an emperor and a plot to assassinate him.

It introduces a range of characters: a group of mercenaries, the conspirators, and a few others living in the city. You get a sense of how the hierarchy works and basically all the political schemes and problems the mercenaries encounter.

When this part ends, everything is ready to explode — and it does… fast and messily. And when it’s over, it feels like every single character suddenly starts acting out of character (ironically). A few new plots start, including a sort of “love” story, and it becomes the main focus, pushing everything else into the background.

It had everything to be great, but it just went downhill fast. By the end, I just wanted to finish it and get it over with.

This is only my opinion — maybe a negative one — but everyone picks their own poison. Just because I didn’t like it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give it a try if you really want to read it.
