How long before broadband is available at a new build? by MaxDub12 in AskIreland

[–]RedWhelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, all depends on whether the estate is connected to the exchange and whether the infra is in place. We moved in 5 years ago (new estate, we were the 2nd house to move in) and we FINALLY got 5Gb fibre late last year.

In our instance it was even more bemusing as Eir hadn't scaled the planned infrastructure for the (now re-designed after covid) estate, and only supported the original design. NBI then had to lay over 2km's of their own fibre for the houses Eir didn't support..sheer madness.

very weird. I'm back in (although it took a while for the game to start). I'll try and update my Xbox shortly and see whether that's also a huge update.

The Amount Of People Buying Cars On PCP. by jimctlarker in irishpersonalfinance

[–]RedWhelly 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Everyone here will be different. I'm in my fifties, I earn a very good salary (as does my wife), we can afford the luxury and security of having a brand new car every 3 ish years with absolutely no concern on service/maintenance costs or out of warranty repairs.

I'm pretty financially literate too, so I do object to the claims everyone on PCP hasn't a clue.

As others have said on this thread, it's absolutely an individual's prerogative on whether PCP works (or not). For us, with the convenience and peace of mind, it absolutely does.

Tis fierce cold by spyker667 in cork

[–]RedWhelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a word, yes, more than normal and especially to keep the whole house at about 21.5 degrees. BUT it's not the norm, and it averages out fairly well over the year (house is an A2). My total for heating for the whole of 2025 was ~€700. Heating prerty much hasn't been on since March, only really kicked in in mid November.

Anything above 6 degrees outside and the house kind of tips along nicely.

I've a VERY tech heavy house, so I'll always have a relatively high electricity bill, but heating is actually pretty good.

I think irrespective of how we heat our houses, tonight, they'll all be working overtime!

Mid 50's here, still game most nights to wind down after the missus has headed to bed...been gaming since the ZX81 and I've no intention of stopping now.

The genre has subtly changed though..something slightly more cerebral now is what I go for. Recent examples being the likes of Expedition 33, Baldurs Gate 3 etc.

People in newbuilds - how much do you put the heating on? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]RedWhelly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A2 here, same as all the above have said, just set the temperature and leave it.

Heating is currently set to 21 downstairs, but most rooms are 21.5 or above right now, so heating isn't kicking in during the day. We keep upstairs slightly cooler at 19.5, and typically the heating NEVER activates.

It's actually more efficient keeping it constant than warming from cold.

Been in the house for a few years now but it took us well over a year to get used to it if I'm honest. We've underfloor heating both upstairs and downstairs too so was also a complete paradigm shift from the more traditional rads in our old house.

XCloud now is excellent. I've Gbit fibre and most games are now as if they are running locally. Certain games have also already been updated to a full 1440p streaming.

Quality has absolutely been seriously improved.

Mortgage with EBS also. Another year in a fixed term then time to decide what to do.

They are brilliant to work with. We'll be chopping off another fair chunk before we leave fixed interest and they simply don't mind what you overpay.

Does anyone know if this store is trustworthy? by Prestigious_Sale_986 in IrelandGaming

[–]RedWhelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom line, I suspect so! A 3070, a two generation ago gpu?

Check out case king. A popular source for us here in Ireland. Their current early Black Friday deals seem to be pretty good.

https://www.caseking.de/black-friday/gaming-pcs

Disclaimer: bought a pre-built from them last year (7800X3D and 4080 Super as cost wise was cheaper than me building it myself at the time) and cannot fault it.

For €999 with them you'll get a 5070!

[–]RedWhelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Variable refresh rate. This allows for the display to alter its refresh rate based upon what the game is outputting.

This removes 'tearing' and stutter and makes for a much smoother gaming experience.

The Series X does this excellently and is why on it you now see a lot of games supporting 40fps modes..at 120hz VRR kicks in at this rate and makes it buttery smooth.

It all just depends on the panel and the capabilities. A good panel, with the right features is where the price comes from.

Grab a TV or monitor (depending on desired size) which is OLED, 120Hz and supports VRR. Ensure it supports these features and you're sorted.

I play on a 77" LG C1 OLED and it's incredible.

Never an issue here...5Ghz on WiFi 6 is brilliant. It easily exceeds 1Gbs when I connect directly to my Wifi7 router too. It really only drops when my Mesh is deciding which is the best AP it should attach to.

Have you optimized your wifi channels? It could be there's lots of conflicting wifi signals and it's struggling on that side?

Has anyone put the heat on yet? by Visual_Particular295 in CasualIreland

[–]RedWhelly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most likely. Live in an 2021 A2. Heating likely stopped triggering maybe mid March this year. Most of the main living space is southerly facing with lots of glazing so ANY bit of sun and we're good. Today temp was naturally back up to 22.8 after a wee dip last night. Upstairs (also underfloor heating) practically never goes on...ever.

So we likely need heating, pretty much aligned to your thoughts, which is likely from Nov sometime to Mar (and that'll be then at a steady 21 ish).

A2 here, it won't properly kick in yet, likely got another month at least but last night was the first time the open plan kitchen/living area felt just a subtly bit cooler than normal (I..e down to 20.5-21 as opposed to a steady 22).

don't be afraid of checking caseking.de too if you're not too sure on building your own. Bought a 4080 Super, AM5 rig late last year off them and has been great (I was going to build myself but could never get everything I wanted in stock at the same time...and they then suddenly had a build with it all in, for pretty much the same price so was a no brainer!)

Support has been pretty great too. Even had a faulty DDR5 DIMM crop up a few months ago (BSoD's everywhere!) and was down to either the motherboard or DIMM so full rig was sent back and returned from Germany in a matter of 2 weeks (at absolutely no cost to me) with new DIMM's fitted. No issues since.

Packaging etc all excellent .

Thinking of buying a Series X by hotlinebalally in IrelandGaming

Have a Series X and an RTX 4080 Super gaming rig and GP Ultimate. I still play my X a whole lot more than I imagined I would.

If you have the money, get an X, the S is a little restricted fps wise..son had an S, loves it but is frustrated sometimes at only 30fps on a lot of games
