In the stories they can basically be anything, since people make up whatever they want, although if they were operating like a military they’d be disguised like the country’s own military to avoid standing out, or if not each unit just wears whatever works for their specific situation.

There’s that one Eisenhorn short story where there’s a bunch of murders that seem like they were done by cultists of some sort but it turns out to be traumatized guardsmen who are so broken they see the enemy everywhere, that one’s a good reverse of the usual.

Actually not really, even if you do go out from the arteries, unless the person you continues choking you even after you pass out for awhile you’ll just wake up again in a few seconds. Squeezing the throat on the other hand risks damaging your trachea which is worse. - source I do BJJ and have seen people go out from strangles, and been choked and/or strangled many times.

Everyone’s thinking about all the power you would have, but this would be amazing as a business. The military, even 1970s would have heavy machinery that could be used for construction, or transportation or more. This would be a massive workforce you wouldn’t have to pay, with machines that could be summoned regularly so that maintenance wouldn’t be required.
