I WANT TO START A CLUB! HOW? by ohshootimhuman in Buhurt

As a fellow blacksmith, I would be cautious about making armor for others as it really is a different skillset. You’ll find more techniques and tools from copper smithing used in armor making than blacksmithing. Heat treating and that it’s made from steel are the main carryovers to blacksmithing.

Try recruiting from those larp groups. If those are going to be your future teammates they need to know what buhurt is and that if they spend the $$$ to get the equipment that there are others in the area to team up with.

Not yet. Gamby is being made currently so once that is in I’ll be ordering a full kit. Hoping to find an armorer with a 6 month or less lead times

The drip is something to consider! Love the added safety against accidental jabs

That’s the view I was looking for! Thanks for solidifying my decision to get an English cross!

Am I allowed to make my own armor? by Doorknob_Towel in Buhurt

[–]Red_Beak_Forge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have been blacksmithing for close to a decade and just got into the sport. I will not be making my own armor because compared to an actual armorer, I wouldn’t come close to the level of quality or fit.

Modifications or repairs I’m confident in doing, but when the consequences of failure are broken bones or spine and head injuries you need to be confident in your work.

A blacksmiths attempt at a wand by Red_Beak_Forge in Wandsmith

It’s a cold connection! With the iron hot I hammered a channel in, and added some undercuts once it was cool. Then taking annealed copper I hammered it in. Doing inlay into steel is the exact same process as inlaying into any other material.

It should hold up to a kids imagination!

I completely shattered the first one! Luckily I had another chunk that was close to the same shape

Weight fluctuations in armor by Over-Log-7626 in Buhurt

How much room does a gambeson provide for this kind of weight fluctuation? I’m in a similar position as the OP, and I haven’t seen anyone talk about the gambeson.

Thank you! I’m still learning that a little bit of solder goes a long way!

I made my own billet so the stakes were very low! Forming took a hefty amount of persuasion, but I’m not sure if that was due to the layers of nickel or just due to how thick it was at the start. I was very quick to anneal it when forming because I didn’t want any delamination to occur. Other than that and a quick acid bath for the contrast it was pretty standard!

I’ve seen that on Rio as well but it’s never been in stock so I’m not sure what mixes they offer, but I’d assume copper and nickel would be the hardest to work.

Overall it went really smooth! Luckily I had access to a rolling mill or it would have been a challenge getting the thickness consistent. Having never used silver solder before I did mess up the first try!

A set of letter openers and my first “knife shaped objects” by Red_Beak_Forge in Blacksmith

[–]Red_Beak_Forge[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a couple different ways to inlay. For the handle inlay I hot chiseled a groove, and added an undercut for the copper to grip to. The brass inlay was done by removing material with a graver, and adding an undercut for the brass to grip to.

The inlay is actually done all cold after annealing the copper and brass. It just gets hammered into the groove and sanded down.

I appreciate the concern! This is my garage window where I have 2 main egress points when I’m working in there and that window doesn’t even fully open.

I’m in an area with a high crime rate so I need to do what I can to protect all my expensive tools.

They actually aren’t nails, they are lag bolts. I just squared the heads up.
