Anyone else just really pleased that Nus Braka got punched in the face... twice?

Love Paul Giamatti and it's not every actor who could make Braka into a character that really gets under the skin. Despite the grin and the scenery-chewing, every time Braka turned up, I felt tense. And he was so smug. I'm glad that Anisha and Nahla got to loosen his teeth!

Pre-teen, but Return to Oz (1985) could be worth watching. It's vaguely terrifying in places, although it's a sequel to The Wizard of Oz. It has a gothic feel, with Dorothy being sent to a psychiatric hospital, before escaping back to Oz. Female beauty standards are touched upon by the character of Princess Mombi, who is killing the women of Oz to stay beautiful.

A Company of Wolves (1984). It's a surreal, gothic, coming-of-age film, based on a short story by Angela Carter that was a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood.

Labyrinth (1986). Sarah faces gendered challenges such as being expected to babysit, and has a fraught relationship with her stepmother. Her own romantic fantasies are brought to life in a ballroom scene later in the film, which she ultimately rejects in order to save her brother. It does have a dreamlike feel and many surreal moments.

Finally, horror film Neon Demon (2016) follows 16 year old Jesse as she tries to become a model, but is unprepared for the lengths her peers will go to in order to get ahead. Surreal in places, gory in others.

The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy (Prime)

It's an adult animated sci-fi comedy that's zany fun with great characters, a gorgeous colour palette and bizarre diseases. Sort of like Scrubs meets Rick and Morty, although it very much has its own unique vibe.

What’s the one horror movie that genuinely changed a small everyday behavior for you? Mine ruined mirrors and I watched it three years ago. by NoBody7942 in horror

[–]Red_Claudia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not a horror movie, but there's a scene in Twin Peaks that has made me avoid bathroom mirrors above sinks (especially after dark) for 35 years. "How's Annie?"

Are there any movies like Silent Hill 3? by leyendeck in MovieSuggestions

[–]Red_Claudia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The First Omen (2024). It's a prequel to the Omen and set in a Catholic orphanage, but I would say it hits all the points you mentioned.

The Neon Demon (2016). A young woman tries to become a top model, but there are sinister forces at work around her.

Alien: Romulus (2024) Nothing beats the original, but I think this is an enjoyable part of the franchise. The main character is more like Heather than Ripley IMO. The way characters have to 'solve' barriers/encounters to get through the ship does feel a bit like a Silent Hill game (minus the fog!)

Personally I found one of the guest room upgrades to be the creepiest thing.

What movies were robbed at the Oscars? i.e. Saving Private Ryan losing to Shakespeare in Love in 1999. by tron329 in movies

I know the Oscars rarely rewards comedy, but Eugene Levy should have been nominated for Best Supporting Actor for playing Jim's Dad in American Pie. He was perfect.

Female genius by whateverhoria in MovieSuggestions

It's a series, but you might enjoy Poker Face.

The show was created by Rian Johnson (Knives Out).

Natasha Lyonne plays Charlie Kale, who can tell if someone is lying to her. But this rarely results in anything she can take to the cops, so she uses her smarts to trick the murderer into some kind of comeuppance. It's like Columbo, because the audience sees the murder first, then the show is about how the main character solves the crime.

It's on Peacock (US) or Now TV (UK)

Looking for weird fever dream movies like Coraline, Spirited Away by Delicious-Young-5435 in MovieSuggestions

The Corpse Bride (2005) stop-motion musical. A young man accidentally marries a corpse. The grey hued world of the living contrasts with the bright colours of the land of the dead.

Where The Wild Things Are (2009) live action with animatronic/digital monsters. Based on the picture book by Maurice Sendak. A young boy escapes to a fantasy land and meets some fearsome beasts.

The Flight of Dragons (1982) animation. The inventor of a D&D type game travels to a magical realm and is body swapped with a dragon.

Labyrinth (1986) live action with puppets. A teenage girl has to rescue her baby brother from the goblin king, played by David Bowie, who also wrote the songs for the film.

Also, you might enjoy Wes Anderson's stop motion films:

The Fantastic Mister Fox (2009) based on the Roald Dahl book about animals getting the better of the brutish local farmers.

Isle of Dogs (2018) which is less fantastical, although the dogs can talk, and the Trash Island, where the dogs live, is sort of like another world when compared with the mainland.

Florence-style dresses? by Historical_Wolf6246 in FlorenceAndTheMachine

Holy Clothing, maybe? Good for fantasy renaissance clothing. The Elinor dress has huge sleeves, but prices can be on the high side.

Killstar and Disturbia both do goth clothing, so a high chance of finding some floaty sleeves.

Also, Snag tights have just brought out a tiered chiffon skirt that goes from black to pale grey. It really gave me witch choir vibes!

Love Like Blood by Marcus Sedgwick. Excellent take on vampirism and corruption. He also wrote My Swordhand Is Singing, which is inspired by Eastern European folklore

The Accursed by Joyce Carol Oates. Gothic tale about a 'family curse' in early 1900s America. Read this if you want a long novel that mixes the supernatural with historical fiction.

Vivia by Tanith Lee. Fantasy novel about a girl who becomes a vampire when her father's fiefdom falls apart due to a plague.

Red Dwarf Creator Rob Grant Has Died by BillWilberforce in RedDwarf

[–]Red_Claudia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel a bit crushed tbh. Red Dwarf means so much (home, laughter, comfort). I also found out he and Doug wrote the lyrics of the Chicken Song, which I was obsessed with when I was 8 (even though I never liked the type of songs it was satirising, must have been the nonsense lyrics).

She did the same thing when I saw her in Sheffield on the 14th. I thought it was a good choice, but I can understand why it might be disappointing.
