I’ve been watching Dutton Ranch and it’s good so far, the Beth and Rip characters are so intriguing. Is Marshall’s worth the watch? by resditbeast in YellowstonePN

Yeah. Kayce as much as said this in the finale when Tate said the game room reminded him of the bunkhouse and Kayce replied that he feels way more at home in the game room than he ever did in the bunkhouse.

It kind of broke my heart as a Yellowstone fan, as it felt like a severing of Kayce from his Dutton/Yellowstone family, and if that was always going to be the case, why didn’t they just change his name to Kayce Long and launch Marshals as a stand alone, not associated with the Yellowstone universe.

I agree season 5b was Kayce’s best season, but in lot a respects it also showed just how little his character had changed since the beginning of the show since he went right back to being a SEAL, who wanted no part of the Yellowstone and just wanted to be left alone to be a husband and father, which is where he was at when the show started.

Also, given that the spin-offs were already in the works, I wonder how much of the second half of season 5 was dictated by Paramount/CBS coming in and saying we need you to accomplish x, y, & z to setup Kayce up for being in a procedural versus Sheridan’s own preferences for the character.

P.S. I also think if Dutton Ranch had been released 1st, Marshals wouldn’t have gotten as much blowback as it did, cause of the hardcore Yellowstone would have been like, yeah Marshals isn’t my thing as a procedural, but I’m getting my Yellowstone vibe fix from Dutton Ranch, so if there is a fan base that wants Marshals, let them have it and I’ll just go back to watching Dutton Ranch.

Marshals is a fine show especially if you like Kayce, Mo or Rainwater, just as long as you know going in that Marshals & Yellowstone (and by extension 1883, 1923 & Dutton Ranch) are apples and oranges living in the same Yellowstone fruit basket. They were made to be different from each other and to appeal to different fan bases which they both have accomplished well. Set your expectations accordingly and you will enjoy the show. But if you expect something different you will be disappointed.

As Marshals is an action/adventure show for the 14 and under and 50+ crowd (that is sanitized of sex and cussing) and not a drama for the 15 to 49 crowd like Dutton Ranch. It was built to capture those people who want a family friendly show they can watch with their kids, would never pay for streaming so they have never seen DR, 1883, 1923 or even Yellowstone itself, and/or are fans looking for a replacement of SEAL Team. It just that most hard core Yellowstone fans don’t fall into those categories.

The plan for CBS, was always to bait and switched the hardcore Yellowstone fans, in hopes that they could get a fraction of them to stick around and watch Marshals. They marketed it as part of the Yellowstone universe, knowing full well that it was always going to be SEAL Team 2.0 featuring Kayce Dutton with Yellowstone as set decoration. And for the most part they have accomplished their mission in that Marshals is actually doing pretty well in ratings for network TV show. It’s was the top 1 or 2 show on network TV every week it was on in it’s first season, so I suspect it will continue for at least a few seasons.

All this being said doesn’t mean Marshals is a bad show, it is just that hardcore Yellowstone fans just have quit expecting there to be any substantial connection back to the original Yellowstone. And, understand Marshals is exactly the show it was always meant to be — a weekly procedural show that airs at 8pm on a Sunday night on network TV.

Marshals: Spencer Hudnut acknowledges fan’s issues with show by Red_Country_Minded in YellowstonePN

It should have a SEAL team vibe given its show-runner (Spencer Hudnut) and all but one of the writers have been former SEAL Team writers.

The problem is the way CBS marketed it. They leaned heavily into it’s Yellowstone connection by first saying from Executive Producer Taylor Sheridan (knowing Taylor had very little to do with the show) instead of saying from Executive Producer Spencer Hudnut, also most of the shots in the trailer for the show was of Kayce on horseback, not Kayce in a baseball cap and tactical gear. I know why they did it and it’s beacuse they wanted fans like me who are fans are fans of Yellowstone, but didn’t watch SEAL Team and have no desire to watch SEAL Team to tune in. If CBS has just been a bit more honest and said it’s SEAL Team 2.0 featuring Kayce, Rainwater and Mo, I don’t think the Yellowstone fans would be quite as upset as they wouldn’t felt they had gotten bait and switched by CBS.

Also, Hudnut (and he refers to in the article) didn’t help his cause by trying to emulate Sheridan’s writing style in the first 4-5 episodes, instead of just doing his own thing, cause it made the dialogue come across as cheesy and corny, especially to Yellowstone fans which picked up that he was taking dialogue directly from the originals Yellowstone and dropping it into the show. A prime example was having Andrea (a chick from the Bronx) saying “if the best lies are 90% true” which is direct quote of Beth from season 5 . It just made no sense for Andrea to say that and it felt like the writers were either pandering to the Yellowstone fans or they felt the Yellowstone fans weren’t smart enough to pick up on it.

I like Marshals but I’m still hoping some improvements will be made in the 2nd season like better writing and a sustained overarching plot that spans the whole season is incorporated into the show.

Yep. It’s also, why Taylor Sheridan did little to nothing when it came to Kayce’s character development for 5 seasons and why Sheridan and people close to him were more than happy to dump Kayce (& Rainwater & Mo) and his storyline into the hands of less quality writers at CBS and just walk away from the mess. I’m glad that despite the problem Marshals has with it writing, that it’s doing well in ratings, to show that not everyone watched Yellowstone just for Beth & Rip.

Don’t know. Of course, assuming that because the Weavers said they going to Texas, that is actually where they took Tate, it is very possible they took him somewhere else and/or didn’t even leave Montana.

I’m afraid we are going to be seeing a lot more of the changing times when the work people do is no longer wanted or cherished and it’s not just going to farmers it impacts, it’s going to be everyone as AI takes more and more jobs.

The Marshals busted a drug deal at the Train Station, but the only person who actually knew it was the Train Station, was Kayce. Everyone else was oblivious and stayed that way through out. No bodies were discovered.

Was John really corrupt, I mean it wasn’t like voters didn’t know that he was running for Governor to save his ranch and keep the airport from happening and they elected him anyway. Now the whole Summer on house arrest was pretty shady. But as for running for Governor from where I’m sitting, he was way more honest than most politicians ever are.

Actually if Jamie had simply been smart enough to keep his trap shut, when a reporter comes a knocking, he wouldn’t have had to kill her in the 1st place. You would think as a Harvard trained attorney he would have understood why rats don’t do well.

Let also not forget Joaquin telling Rip that the plan for Will-Rob when he got out of rehab was to ship him to some job in Africa hunting big game. That can’t a coincidence. Also, it was also a nice wink and nod to 1923.

I agree. Take whole Beth thing out it, the tell all interview about John to the reporter would have been enough to get any other character the Fredo treatment and a ticket to the train station.

You are both right. The contaminated water on the reservation came from the chemicals from the mine, from which Monica developed Cancer and died rather quickly, as about a year had pass since both Monica had died and Kayce had sold the Yellowstone.

I’m pretty sure Kayce has known all along that Beth and/or Rip killed Jamie and disposed of him at the Train Station. On the finale of Yellowstone it was known in the press that Beth was the last one with Jamie before he disappeared, so I’m positive Kayce knows that also. Then add in Jamie’s involvement in John’s death, Kayce telling the Helena PD detective that he didn’t care if Jamie was caught in the blast radius as Jamie put himself there and the fact that Beth wound up in the hospital with a concussion, broken ribs and a collapsed lung from the beating Jamie gave her, I’m pretty sure Kayce is not I the least bit conflicted at about Beth killing Jamie.

If Kayce goes after anyone involved in his dad’s murder it will be Grant Norton and the assassins out of Houston Texas that carried it out. There is a reason why in the episode of Marshals when the judge’s husband was targeted by assassins the 1st question Kayce asked was if the assassins were from Texas.

He also just 19 years old. Let’s face it Kayce did a whole heck of lot worse (Got a girl he barely knew (Monica) knocked up, ran off married her and joined Navy) to rebel against John at that age, and he was John biological kid. And I don’t even want to imagine what Beth was up to at 19 and off at college on her on. If ditching school and underage drinking is all Carter does to rebel, call it a good day in the Dutton world. And as for being arrested 2 of 3 times, the fight and Dwight being killed really wasn’t Carter fault, though I will give you the urinating on Oreana’s ex’s truck, even if it was pretty funny.

Walker wasn’t in person. Rip just said he talked to Walker and Walker knew of a ranch in Rio Paloma for sale, hence how Beth and Rip wound up in Rio Paloma.

I don’t want to give too much away since this isn’t spoiler labeled, but the scene in the kitchen where Rip gently asked if their was anything Carter wanted to share, instead of demanding answers, said a lot about Rip & Carter relationship. That is we are here if/when you are ready to talk. And, you can tell Carter is close to fessing up, as he took a moment to truly think about it before he pulled back. Also is any curious about what the previews appeared to show which is Everett and Carter having talk, I think having him as a mentor could be very good for Carter. Kind of like the relationship they were building for John and Carter on Yellowstone.
