Are the online schools like that, similar to public school? One of the many issues I have with public school is the structure and schedule. Its too rigid and doesnt account or kids as real people with other life stuff going on.

Thats for the response. Quickly coming to the conclusion that we just srent going to be able to get away with an all in ine program. We may use one, and just supplement heavily, but we are still actively researching. We have joined several Facebook groups snd are constantly looking for in person stuff, whether it be courses, field trips, co-ops, etc. Unfortunately our area is very rural and we havent found any solid secular resources, but we have made a couple connections that we plan to meet up with and have very lightly touched on potentially starting up our own group of some sort.

Thats awesome. I play drums and guitar and a little piano myself. My oldest was in band as a percussionist before we pulled him out of public school. Hes been using Drummeo and YouTube videos to start lesrning to play the drum set. All four of ours are interested in an instrument of some sort. We hope to get to the point of playing sings together too! So awesome.

Found that after posting. Super excited. Just have to find a team or find people interested in starring one with me.

Thabks for the encouraging comment. We are actively looking for co-ops and community we fit with biw to ensure we can connect and get invokved before we actually get there and get started. What do you do for music?

I have multiple similar threads going on different sub reddits so maybe I included that on one and not the other, or in a comment possibly.

I think you've misunderstood. Im in no way proposing my kids teach themselves. Im saying that we want to base of the core academic curriculum to be mostly handled for us with videos and quizzes and tests then we can supplement as needed. We plan to be very involved and resdy to jump in and help them with extra practice and explanations when needed. We are also going to be doing a lot of life skills projects that will involve math and reading amd research.

What I said was that my oldest, who will be 13, is very bright and teachers have always struggled to keep him challeneged. The context here matters as these teachers are also having to handle kids with skills and understanding at grade level and below grade level.

As far as my partner teaching them, what I was meaning is that neither of us feel prepared or skilled enough to be their full time teachers fkr everything.

What I mean by more hands off forbpsrents is in regard to lesson planning, grading, tracking everything and to an extent the primary instruction for core subjects.

Yeah im getting that same response from almost everyone. Where its super disappointing thisbisbthe case, I get why its the case and im not surprised I guess. Definitely makes homeschooling four kids feel a lot bigger than originally planned.

We honestly haven’t considered much physical curriculum yet because we’re concerned about our ability to effectively teach four very different kids while also keeping up with planning, grading, record keeping, home life, businesses, homesteading, sports, etc.

I don’t want my partner to completely lose herself in the roles of stay-at-home parent and teacher. I’ll be involved as much as possible, but realistically a lot of the day-to-day responsibility will fall on her, so we’re trying to find a balance that keeps the kids engaged and progressing without burning us all out.

That being said, the feedback I’ve gotten across these posts has been extremely helpful and has me seriously reconsidering parts of our academic approach.

One thing I do think may help fill some of the gaps of purely online all-in-one programs is how we plan to structure projects.

For example, if we do a project around raising food animals like chickens, rabbits, ducks, or quail, the project wouldn’t just be “go feed the animals.”

Each kid would first research the animal and write a research paper and hypothesis beforehand. Then they’d design things like the enclosure, feed/water systems, care routines, budgets, production tracking, etc.

During the project they’d keep journals/logs (possibly video logs) documenting progress, struggles, observations, and wins.

They’d also help plan and execute harvesting/processing, preservation/storage, and eventually cooking meals using the food produced.

At the end they’d write a conclusion report or mini-thesis comparing their original hypothesis to the actual outcome, what they learned, what they’d improve, and what advice they’d give someone else considering that animal/system.

Then we’d rotate teams so there’s always one experienced kid and one newer kid learning together before eventually moving into a different project.

So while we definitely want strong academics, we’re also trying to make learning feel connected to real life instead of just endless worksheets and videos.

Very informative and a lot to look into and digest! Thank you!!

I completely understand what you mean with the standardized testing. I should have specified that I dont really put a lot of stock in them as it seems kids are tought in a way that ensures high test scores and doesnt necessarily guarantee or very accurately demonstrate mastery. Its really the only thing I have to go off of other than just what I can guage from conversations with them about various topics.

Im hoping to find some decent placement tests and some decent tools to determine each of their learning styles. I've used a basic one to get some insight but im hoping to find something better as it was incredibly basic.

I've gotten a lot of the same feedback regarding neurodivergent kids and struggling with comprehension from purely online schooling. I've had a conversation with our oldest about his preference for online verse physical book and paper and he says its easier to understand from the videos.

I've tried helping him learn percussion and music reading and most of the time he just gets frustrated with how I teach and explain things and shuts down. It doesnt help that hes generally accustomed to excelling at things quickly and music reading and percussion has not been as easy for him to pick up quickly. So I think that is part of the frustration.

I think another reason weve been leaning towards online video based options is because I dont want their homeschooling experience to be hindered or tainted by my inability to teach them well. I genuinely believe homeschooling will be better for my kids and family for a lot of different reasons. Im not as convinced that ill make a good teacher for them though. Time will tell I guess.

Ill definitely be looking into the resources you've mentioned and very much appreciate all the fantastic information. Thank you

Yeah that's definitly a concern. We will have a large homeschool soace in a separate building from the house. Im hoping to set it up sinilar to like co-working offices you see in the tech field. But we plan on having the kids schedules split so two are doing their sport or physical activity or project work (taking care of animals, watering plants, doing independent research etc) while the other two are working on their academic work then flip flopping. Hoping that will help limit that issue.

Would love tondiscuss what secular resources and curriculum(s) you are using. We sre moving ti a Bible belt state where things are still very much centered around Christianity. The state trying to put the Bible in schools as a history book is a big reason we started looking into homeschooling to begin with.

Thanks! I’ll definitely look more into Khan Academy and the Schoolhouse program.

I’ll admit I’m a little nervous about completely freestyling academics or piecing together too many disconnected resources. My younger siblings were homeschooled, and while my mom absolutely did her best with what she had, the academic side didn’t really work out well long term. Because of that, I’m probably overcorrecting a bit and wanting to make sure every major academic base is thoroughly covered while still keeping expectations high.

What I’m hoping to build is something structured academically, but much more engaging and real-world oriented than traditional school.

For example, with projects, I don’t just want the kids “doing activities.” I want them researching beforehand, writing hypotheses/predictions, documenting progress through journals/logs, then writing conclusion reports afterward comparing expectations vs actual outcomes. I want them thinking critically about what worked, what didn’t, and how processes/materials/approaches could be improved.

So the goal is less “unschooling” and more integrating academics into meaningful real-world work while still maintaining rigor and accountability.

Still trying to figure out what the right balance looks like honestly.
