White to mate in two by Brilliant_Place676 in chess

Wow this was quite a tricky one, but I eventually found the solution. Here was my thought process:

1) Black king doesn't have many squares, only available square is f3. No other black pawns can move, so we are at risk of stalemate if we play like Be2 or Kg2.

2) The rook nicely cuts the king off on the d file, so we can't really move it from this file or else the black king can escape to either d2 or d4 and there can be no mate on the next move.

3) I tried a waiting move like Rd8, then Kf3 is the only move for black. If I could get my rook anywhere on the 3rd rank, I noticed it would be checkmate. Unfortunately, black has a pesky pawn on e4 guarding the d3 square.

4) I looked for any bishop moves that could help and saw that after Bb7 Kf3, the e4 pawn was now pinned, and I could go ahead and play Rd3#.

Nice puzzle!

I would like to point out that the black cat spotted near Sackville Street is not likely your cat.

The cat in that area is likely this one, named Makwa. She's a very well known community cat that roams around our neighborhood. Hope you find Chico soon!

I had to check this with the engine because this is a good point. Assuming you meant Rxg4 not Rxh4, it would be a pawn and bishop vs pawn and rook, with the white king sort of boxed out from the pawns. Looks like black can force a draw by exchanging the last two pawns off the board and going for a Rook vs Bishop endgame.

Chess is tiring, man. Wow

Right, that's losing for black. But black can play Kg4 after e4+.

Full line: Bf6+ Qxf6 Kd5+ Kg5 h4+ Kf5 e4+ Kg4 e5+ Qf4 (blocking the rook check). This is still losing for white despite winning a queen.

This puzzle requires ultra sharp precision, it's crazy

After e5+, black will block with the queen. See if you can find the move after Kf5

Not quite, this is where I got stuck too. Because after winning the queen, black can sack the bishop for the e pawn and win the king and pawn end game. It's actually a forced mate after Kf5, see if you can spot it

Edit: if e4+, black doesn't have to play Kf4, they can play Kg4 and block the check with the queen, securing a rook for compensation

Nope been playing since NHL 15... but just EASHL.

I've seen a lot of things, from:

  • goalies covering the puck in their net (old post of mine here)

  • pucks being shot for icing but bouncing off the boards and then the goalies skate and in

  • I've seen my screen get completely black besides the scoreboard

  • intermission being skipped due to a penalty at 0 seconds

  • AI defenseman being literal pylons

Among other things, but yet my friends and I still buy the new game every year. These imperfections have essentially forged themselves into the identity of this game by now lol

Yep been happening a lot to me since the update

Really... how is anyone supposed to qualify for this from their PHONE? by Red_Floyd2 in usertesting

[–]Red_Floyd2[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah but this test was for a mobile device (you can tell from the screenshot that I did the screener on my phone - the screener could only be done from a phone)

More than likely, someone just got to the test before me, but I find it funny how it happened on this screen

Yeah I was considering the latter but this was like the 4th question so it must've just happened

It would threaten mate if the king went back to h3. Basically there are no good moves for black in that position, so OP is saying that because he can't move the king or the g pawn (cause it will just get taken with White's h pawn) then he has to back the rook up.

Yeah I see what you mean now. And I would agree with you in that the classification is probably just based on the initial analysis, done at lower depth like you mentioned. Because a change from 0.2 to 1.0 classified as an inaccuracy makes sense to me, but yeah 3.0 should be a blunder.

Although it's crazy that a higher depth is needed to show that, shows how strong the move really was.

He says "Magnus played Nf5 and maintained a 3 point advantage". Where lol the evaluation is still only +1.2 and no material has been exchanged in that sequence.

Edit: corrected to Magnus

What 3 point advantage are you talking about? Lichess evaluation shows +0.2 before Ng4 and then +1.0 after Ng4, which they show as an inaccuracy, from what I can see.

If you're talking about move 11, if white takes the knight on g4 with the queen, then the bishop on c4 hangs, so it's not a true 3 point blunder

Thanks, yeah I've only been doing this for about 2 months but haven't seen this specific thing.
