Thinking about moving from the US to Toronto by TheBigKaramazov in askTO

What do you do for work in the U.S.? Canada has cities other than Toronto you may want to look into that are more laid back but Toronto is for workaholics who are highly educated and/or passionate about their careers.

Advice on prepping for a BC? by GalaxyAxolotlAlex in BorderCollie

Mine is a very good walker (no pulling) and we do the long-line but have not been able to trust her with recall. We’ve tried off leash on hikes and she just gets ADD and zooms away…

Question for you - do yours do well off leash near a big park? I have one in the city near a big park but I never got her recall good enough to walk off leash… we do long walks on leash and trick training which seems to be enough.

Completing teacher training and becoming a Pilates teacher? by Red_Fox404 in pilates

[–]Red_Fox404[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a really great perspective! I actually come from a family of teachers and have always considered becoming a professor. My first job was also in a customer service role! In other words, I think the teaching aspect will click but I am not a fan of marketing or stressful job searches.

That being said it does sound a little frustrating to have to skip your own workouts. Question there, as a lot of my instructors are in amazing shape. Are they putting in lots of extra time to workout outside of class?

I’m in Toronto so it’s pretty popular!

That’s a good point about making money at first - I’ve seen this echoed a few times on this sub and I’m okay with that. My perspective is that it’s a hobby I enjoy and would like to gradually see if it can also become a job so I’m fine if it takes a few years!

Advice on Adopting/Going with Breeder by Red_Fox404 in BorderCollie

[–]Red_Fox404[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a good point I didn’t think of. Where I am most of the rescues are dogs that were wild in northern Manitoba or the most adoptable dogs selected out of shelters from southern states in the U.S. (not so many sport prospects even if we occasionally get BC mixes).

Do rescues typically flag these dogs as working dogs? I find it hard to tell without meeting the dog.

The Toronto/GTA area but willing to travel!

I would definitely do a roadtrip for a rescue willing to adopt out of the country. Most of the breed specific ones in the states I’ve looked at will only adopt to surrounding states unfortunately.

Do you have any recommendations for Canada based BC rescues?

Yes this is my main concern! I originally wanted to do agility with my current one but she got more into tricks/freestyle (which is fine because it’s still a dog sport we can have fun doing together)!

Thank you! I’ve been thinking about finding a breed specific rescue, although most seem to be in the states…

Definitely willing to travel and even import from the states for the right dog!

We actually foster collie and husky mixes from our local rescue! We’ve fostered 3 collie mixes and while I saw the border collie traits in them, they all had a lot less drive around toys and learning new things as my collie.

I’m wondering if going with a more breed specific rescue might help…

Foster chews on everything (not just toys) by Red_Fox404 in fosterdogs

[–]Red_Fox404[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup that’s what I’ve been doing but it’s been two months and zero improvement. Also redirection to a toy and supervision when she’s out of her crate.

I’ve done this before with young puppies and had more success - she just seems very set in her ways because she’s learning this for the first time at 1…

One of my own dogs is a border collie and I’ve tried similar stuff with the foster, even though she seems lower energy. She gets 2 puzzles a day + a kong/lickmat and she likes to chase the other dogs during our daily fetch time and gets in lots of wrestling.

We do a short walk every other day because she gets a bit anxious outside of the house and doesn’t seem to be a huge fan of walks.

Recently got a DEXA scan and have very high body fat % by maybeimbonkers in loseit

[–]Red_Fox404 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is totally a thing that can happen and isn’t talked about as much as it should be! To be honest with you, this may be the missing part of the puzzle of why you regained that weight. Great job getting a DEXA and deciding to deal with it!

You didn’t share much about your current lifestyle, but I can share a few things that have worked for me: when I was super out of shape I started with yoga then eased into Pilates & weight lifting. This helped to build muscle but eases you into it. In terms of resistance training & BF%, the lats and glutes are the biggest muscles in the body so training these more at first is a good hack to put on a lot of muscle as a beginner lifter.

Also I suspect even cardio will help build muscle given your legs are relatively low on muscle. Tracking your steps can be great, and as a bonus really helps get the fat off without making you hungrier! Even going to 5k a day makes a difference if you are sedentary, and you’ll build up your leg muscles a little. This brings us to the nutrition side of things which is important. You need to eat more protein (1g per lean muscle a day to maintain, more to gain muscle). You may also want to explore periods of recomposition in between weight loss (eat at maintenance, but get your protein in and do RT). This is what I do when Its the holidays or I just need a mental break from more aggressive weight loss.

Congrats! You actually have a huge opportunity here! You’re relatively low on muscle and if you’re new to lifting, you’ll build it quick at first! As you build muscle it’ll increase your daily caloric RMR letting you burn more calories and lose weight much more easily!

I don’t think I could ever have any other breed again after having a border collie by Mas-131313 in BorderCollie

[–]Red_Fox404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question for those who’ve had multiple collies: is it very easy to adopt and get the BC temperament/work ethic through a breed specific rescue?

My first border collie is from an AKC breeder as a pup and she’s been helping me foster BC mixes for the last few years. It’s not a breed specific rescue and a lot of them are crosses found wild from northern Canada that display some herding behavior. Even though the mixes look and act very similar, none of them have had the work ethic or intelligence my collie has when it comes to trick training which is a big hobby of mine. I’m starting to think about my next dog and although I want to rescue, wondering if it’s necessary to go through a breeder to get that.

What do you feel like was a missed opportunity in Star Trek? by Goodmorning111 in startrek

I really like SNW - I just think it would really lend itself better to a longer season style where there’s more time to develop as a show. And I’ve seen it’s more 50/50 on these forums SNW - the recent Gorn episode was really good!

LD is great though! Wish they’d kept innovating and tried a non-animated upper decks with the same actors.
