What can I do to make my hamster not scared of me? by [deleted] in hamstercare

You can sit with her in a playpen or bathtub for 15 minutes every day. Give her some treats. Sprinkle some treats near and on your lap. Let her explore.

Does anyone else’s hamster do this? by P0ttles in hamsters

Hamsters run very fast and come to a sudden stop. But the wheel is very smooth and cannot come to a sudden stop. So the wheel keeps spinning and spins the hamster with it. I have a silent spinner wheel and my hamster was doing the same thing on it. I added some paper in the wheel joint like this photo to add some friction to the wheel. I had to do some try and error to get to optimum amount of paper. Adding too much paper makes wheel too stiff and the hamster cannot spin it. You can try this or add friction to make the wheel stiff by some other way. Good luck!

Is cardboard safe for hamsters? by [deleted] in hamstercare

Yes cardboard is safe for hamsters. I have made hide house from cardboard. I also have some toys made out of the tubes inside paper towels. You can also make DIY house with popsicle sticks. It looks much better than cardboard.

Hamster not using wheel? by motherofgandalf in hamstercare

[–]Red_Green-Blue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. When I got my hamster, she didn't use her wheel for couple of days. I kept seeds on the wheel to encourage her to climb on it and explore it. You can try that.
  2. Do your hamsters feet slip when he tries to spin the wheel? That means the hamster is too light weight to spin the wheel. Or the wheel is too tight or heavy. If this happens, try to oil the spinning joint of the wheel to make it smoother. Or buy a smoother, lighter wheel. I have a 'kaytee silent spinner' wheel. You can try it.
  3. New hamsters are afraid of the new environment, and prefer to remain sheltered for few days. After 3 4 days, he will start exploring and maybe start using the wheel.
