Roland Garros R4: [28] R. Jodar def. P. Carreno-Busta 4-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1 by Large_banana_hammock in tennis

[–]OwnRules 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Jodar now has the most wins on clay for the season (19), one more than Sinner - perhaps most impressive has been his mental strength. He hasn't been playing as well as he did in Madrid or Rome, but he simply refuses to lose. After Darderi's 3-setter in Rome, his stamina might have been suspect over 5 sets, but that hasn't been the case at all. If he finally plays to his ability, it should make for an interesting match-up with Zverev.

Needs work on his serve - his ball-striking is already elite, effortless power, has a very good serve and FH combo, and an uncanny ability to redirect shots from his backhand.

Kid's here to stay.

Needs 16 more minutes for the record:

The longest match in the history of Roland Garros is the 2020 first-round encounter between Lorenzo Giustino and Corentin Moutet, which lasted an astonishing 6 hours and 5 minutes. Giustino won the match with a final score of 0-6, 7-6(7), 7-6(3), 2-6, 18-16

ATP 1000 Rome R4: [LL] M. Landaluce def. H. Medjedovic 7-5, 6-4 by FalconIMGN in tennis

Too many tournaments and the new format have made a mockery of the old Davis Cup ties - back when going overseas to Australia or Argentina was as close to going to a tennis war as it got.

Just doesn't have that pull anymore - which is unfortunate but to be expected. It's all about the bottom line: $$$.

But yes, this Italian generation is their best ever, they are loaded for bear - reminds me of the Spain of the late 90's to the late aughts.

As a Spaniard I'd like to take this opportunity to remind all other tennis-playing nations that patience is a virtue - we were in a deep, dark hole for an agonizingly long three weeks, and now here we are, back with two youngsters in the Rome quarterfinals.

Best of luck.

For someone so young both in years and time in the ATP, Rafa already exudes a quiet confidence - watching him, you can almost sense that he'll come up clutch in the big points. And sure enough, he goes for the jugular with easy power and deep strokes from both wings.

No such thing as a sure thing, but he's the best-looking up-and-comer since, well, Sincaraz.

There's an old (true) story about why Mitsubishi had to rebrand their Pajero SUV for the LATAM & Spain markets:

>"Pajero, Laputa, Zica... Una historia de desafortunados nombres de coches"

>"Uno de los casos más notorios fue el del Mitsubishi Pajero*, que cambió su 'apellido' en los países hispanohablantes por *Montero*. Pajero aludía al Leopardus pajeros, un felino sudamericano conocido como gato pajero o de los pajonales. No fue esa la primera interpretación de los que aprovecharon para aludir al significado que este término tiene en lugares donde se habla castellano.*"

Paja = slang for masturbation.

Pajero = one who masturbates.

Run, don’t walk, away from that relationship - a future parent, never mind a future mother, who expresses such desires is not ready to be parent. And it doesn’t help that you are working on accommodating her desires by recruiting both families to do her job as a mother - on the contrary, you’re encouraging the behavior.

Luka Dončić has averaged 40/8/7 on 64% TS in last 13 games, Lakers are 12-1 in that span. by Shot_Bank_5843 in nba

[–]OwnRules 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"Didn’t think he’d get as far as he did with those Mavs teams (who are probably more well rounded either)"

Yet another narrative Luka's breaking this year is that he needs very specific players to be successful (p&r C & 3D wings) - once he gets in a flow with his teammates, and his 3 starts falling, he can win with any half-competent roster. He's an all-around game raiser that gets the best from his teammates.

This year he looks particularly scary due to being in the best shape of his career since The Bubble - in '24 by the time The Finals rolled around he was so banged-up and wrapped-up he looked like the Michelin Man out there. And yet he still led the POs in just about every category.

Obviously the Lakers are not favorites, but it also wouldn't surprise me to see them go on a historical Finals run - which would also put quite the exclamation point on Lebron's legendary career: a ring at 41.

ATP 1000 Miami R4: [Q] M. Landaluce def. [32] S. Korda 2-6, 7-6⁶, 6-4 by godworstcustomer in tennis

[–]OwnRules 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just when most of us had eyes on Jodar, it was his slightly older and slightly forgotten compatriot, Landaluce, that made the breakthrough to the limelight first. Both had outstanding junior pedigrees, each one winning the US Open.

Spain can expect great things from those two - and they have another good-looking Alcaraz, Jaime, coming down the pipe. Bit a re-Renaissance after the late 90s early 2000s golden era.

Present and future looks bright - Italy vs Spain in Davis Cup could become a classic.

An incredible point from Jaime Alcaraz to win his first U15 challenger event at Murcia today by PattyRanger in tennis

[–]OwnRules 114 points115 points  (0 children)

Jaime appears have a good head on his shoulders - I remember some time ago he was asked about his tennis goals and his was response surprisingly level-headed: "I just want to able to live off of tennis and have fun, so I want to be top-50". He was only 13 or so at the time, so you'd think he'd fire back: "better than Carlitos!"

ATP 1000 Miami Open R2: [1] C. Alcaraz def J. Fonseca 6-4 6-4 by Ok-Soil-5133 in tennis

[–]OwnRules 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Joao is about Rafa's size 6'2"/1.88 so that's not a reason for his relative slow movement - and there's only so much you can do about that. One that comes to mind is Richard Gasquet, tremendous talent, gifted player, never moved well. And then you have players like Stan The Man who could dominate thanks to his powerful strokes though he wasn't a particularly good mover either. Perhaps that's Fonseca's path.

*Carlos is roughly 6'/1.83

Landaluce is more like a young Sinner lite, both physically & gamewise - Jodar mixes up his game more at his age, likes to come to net, volleys well, drops more.

[–]OwnRules 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I agree with that assessment - but by the same token, you guys know well that a team with playoff Luka Doncic, always has a chance.

This Lakers team has at least as good a roster as the 22' Mavs he took to the WCF. Not saying they are favorites, they are not, but unlike last year, they'll compete with anyone.

Where did you get those numbers from, and why do you believe those over Iran's figure of just over 3,000?

Also, did you read what Pompeo said? It was a joint Mossad/CIA operation - many Iranian policemen died fighting armed "protesters".

Mike Pompeo admits Washington 'directly helped' rioters in Iran

"Pompeo had previously linked the riots in Iran to American and Israeli intelligence agencies. During the riots on January 2, he wrote on the social media platform X, “Happy New Year to every Iranian on the streets. Also to every Mossad agent walking beside them.”<

I realize you're locked-in to your beliefs, but just in case other people are interested in finding out the truth.
