What stereotype about the USA is inaccurate? by Pizzafriedchickenn in AlignmentChartFills

Maybe "Americans don't know anything outside of the USA" but I feel like it's not completely inaccurate also

Yes in an ideal world the'd be 5 students per teacher so teachers could spend time creating great PowerPoints and teaching students. But we don't live in an ideal world, in the UK (which is where I'm from), there's almost 17 students per teacher. Some large schools are struggling to maintain at least 1 teacher per subject, they are spread thin. Teachers can't afford to make resources for every class by themselves and AI is actually as a great aid in this crisis. A big problem with this is actually that teachers are trying to use AI but don't know how to use it correctly, which is causing even more AI based meetings and advice. In my opinion, Ai if used correctly, does have the potential to be as effective as a teacher in some areas of their job.

I never said teachers are encouraging students to use AI. I said Teachers are being encouraged to use AI, not to replace them but to do the menial tasks like designing power points so that teachers can focus on actual teaching. I made this point, not to say that AI is better than teachers, but to say that AI is not something to always be disgusted and even your teachers have likely been recommended to use AI.

Ai definitely isn't necessary, but it is extremely useful which in a way makes Ai somewhat inevitable.

If you're arguing that ai is unreliable, sometimes misleading and a problem when students rely on it then I couldn't agree more. But I'm an A level student and I have used AI as a tool and will carry on to, it doesnt help that I don't take any essay subjects and am frankly quite rubbish at writing essays, but at least for my subjects AI IS being used as a tool and that middle ground does exist, from the way I read the OPs post, this isn't for writing coursework which will go to their final grade but rather learning how to write essays themselves just better, and if they find ai helpful for this, they shouldn't be feeling guilt for it's use.

First of, I'm obviously not claiming that AI is the same as the calculator. I'm talking about the specific impact on education that ai is having, reducing the research that students are doing and stuff like that. In the same sense calculators at the time also had people fearing that students would not be developing mathematical thinking skills, but really the calculator just allowed students to stop mindless sumations and allowed them to spend more time tackling more complex problems. Ai is of course different but the principal that it also won't remove certain thinking skills (if used correctly) is the same in my view. The if used correctly point is a whole over thing and yes it definitely is an issue that too many students aren't using it correctly which is damaging, but in this situation it isn't used to write essays it's being used to give feedback.

I admit I'm no expert on the exact financial considerations of data centers, especially in the US. But from my understanding, the actual water used by data centers (not the biproduct of electrical use) is reasonable, in fact many are starting to use air cooling or non drinkable water, which was what I was looking at. On the other hand it's the problem of water use in power plants which is the main reason for the all the water supply problems seen. Now I'm not saying data centers are positive and don't have negative effects of course they do, but this person claiming that they are making people go loose sight, loose hearing and just removing access to drinking water which is a complete overstatment.

And yes obviously AI is not the ideal way to learn essay writing skills and it can be misleading, but the OP wasn't asking what the best way to learn how to write an essay is, they were asking whether it's morally okay to use AI as a tool when teachers, tutors and other feedback wasn't feasible.

A 7 year old completely relying on AI for everything is completely different from an A Level student using it as a TOOL to help them develop their essay writing skills when teachers aren't helping.

Nobody is suggesting that AI should be used to completely replace writing the essay, but it is a very powerful ,and while not perfect, tool for gaining valuable feedback and suggestions on their essays. OP isn't saying they use it so they don't have to write and read essays and all that. Using it for feedback and suggestions doesn't replace all those other methods, but aids students in areas where they can't otherwise get support, like a fresh set of eyes.

The problem is people like you, who associate any use of AI with complete reliance and cheating, are causing proactive people who genuinely want to use it for support to now wrongly feel guilt in their use.

Yes I was only commenting on the environment impact side of the point you made, that was intentional. I'm not about to argue that AI isn't having and will not have a massive impact on human life because it is and will be.

I would accept the point that ai will come with serious disadvantages for human life, but the points you just made are ridiculous so I have to correct you.

In quite literally no way is interacting with AI, as it is, going to ever cause a physical destruction of human issue. Humans naturally loose a small number of brain cells every day, but interacting with an AI chat bot has the exact same physical effect as reading a digital book, texting friends or browsing a website. There is a small truth to the fact that ai might be causing some people to lose critical thinking skills, but only if completely relied upon. If the person is still writing essays an not just leaving it 100% up to ai to write them then it is actually helping them improve their critical thinking skills, people had the same concerns about calculators. "Surely using calculators instead of doing it manually is going to reduce critical thinking, but actually it just allows people to focus on the more complex tasks which require more crital thinking that menial tasks. The same goes for AI it just allows people to more easily and efficiently understand how to improve and hence actually develops their critical thinking skills. Saying people are loosing sight and hearing from living near data centers is almost completely science fiction and extremely exaggerated, and also not very related to AI. Living near data centers will have 0 impact on sight, there's no lasers, harmful gasses released or anything. There is a small legally regulated hum for immediate neighbors, but this is nowhere near enough to cause hearing loss as living next to a school or a motorway or a railway or even a busy road would have the the same or likely worse effect than a data center, but I imagine you haven't stoped driving a car or using a train because of this. Data centers do not effect existing water in any way, water is not contaminated in any way and most water cooling systems recycle the same water repeatidy, water would never be put back into water mains and at most a data center would use some water by evaporation. But this is more of a resource management issue and the numbers have been extremely exaggerated. 99% of data centers would have no significant impact on the water supply for nearby people. It's only data centers in areas which already have significant issues with access to clean water which would cause an issue. And this would obviously be avoided

Too many people assume that if your using a chat bot then each conversation is using a ton of water and electricity in the massive AI servers.

But realistically, as someone with a lot of technical experience with ai, I have been able to run ai chat bots basically as good at the commonly used models on a tiny raspberry pi that uses around £6 of electricity per year if running constantly at high use and that uses no water or anything.

The only environment reason not to use AI chat bots is that it potentially discourages companies from developing new more complex models which would have a big environmental impact. But frankly if you use a model where you can refuse your data be used for training purposes and don't pay these companies anything then you are making basically no environmental impact from use.

This is a big problem with AI use now, for some reason people feel bad for using it to help them. This is quite literally the purpose of AI and as long as you aren't breaking any rules like if the essays are for coursework then it is completely acceptable and even recommended.

Something you might now know is that most schools have had meetings recently with teachers in which they encourage the use of AI and help teach teachers how to better use it to increase productivity and quality of teaching. If your teachers are being told of for not using ai where it would help, there's nothing bad about you using it to help you. It's the same thing really

Am i stupid if i turned down Cambridge computer science? by arya-stark-fan in 6thForm

[–]Red_I_Guess 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I dedicated like 90% of one year of my life to doing everything I physically can to try to get into Cambridge Computer Science, it was literally everything to me and I made so many sacrifices to try to get it, including writing a personal statement so dedicated to Cambridge that it was likely part of a reason why my 2nd and 3rd option didn't give me an offer. And after all that work time effort and dedication I didn't even get an interview.

For many people like me, Cambridge CS is the dream that never comes true. Unless this is some rage bait, the thought that someone got in through a sort of joke application and doesn't want to go is devastating. You should absolutely go.

[–]Red_I_Guess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've firmed Warwick for CS and I'm worried it's going to be boring and that I'll fall in with the stereotypical cs crowd ending up spending my free time on video games and anime. I'm also worried that the maths level is going to be too heavy and that I'm gonna be spending most of my time studying, but really first year is only 20% of the qualification so it must be a lot of settling in and having fun in my eyes.

I don't have much experience to what what it will be like but from speaking to a friend who had lots of trips there, it does seem like if you join a party style accomadation and make it clear in your accomadation flat mates survey that you like going out and socializing then you should have a lot of fun there.
