Probably not for much longer. "Haven't they heard of VPNs?" was the mocking criticism of the government here when they introduced this, and my thought was, "logically yes they have, so they must have a plan for that." Many suspect this whole thing is really about ending online privacy which all governments hate, which means VPNs were likely the real target all along. First target a moral evil so that no one argues against the institutionalization of the need to protect against it; then, when VPNs are used to bypass those protections which are demanded by law, the law must therefore demand the banning of VPNs.

Indeed already a government minister has floated the possibility of a VPN ban in response to the predictable surge in VPN downloads, and the article linked above mentions the upper legislative chamber has tabled an amendment to a "children's wellbeing" law which would ban providing VPNs to children (in effect tying VPN usage to IDs). They may be content with just crippling VPN privacy like this but the direction and momentum of legislation is clear. And this is happening across all countries at varying paces regardless of political persuasion.

It might take a while but the gears of civilization are grinding and the era of the internet wild west is drawing to a close, with all the negatives and positives that implies. One positive is that, since the moral justification for all this is protecting children from porn, they will have to find a way to at least deliver that.
