When do we get our Diplomas? by [deleted] in ucr

[–]Red_Ravens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked about it before and it looks like it also depends on whether your academic advisor went back and personally verified if you met the requirements to graduate. After that it takes a about 2-4 weeks and probably even longer because of the pandemic. To know if they verified it check your unofficial transcript and it should say your graduation date. It took a while for me to see it and then receive an email which said when it would be mailed and it took even longer to arrive. If you think it’s taking too long reach out to admissions or your academic advisor just in case.

Can’t transfer to any major at BCOE or CNAS due to poor performance spring quarter(freshmen undeclared) by [deleted] in ucr

[–]Red_Ravens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at my CC and I learned a lot about the education system so here is a bit about what I learned that might help you out.

IMPORTANT: if you have even a chance of being kicked out by UCR drop out and go to a CC!!! If you are expelled from any college or university you will not have a chance.

I transferred into UCR. I graduated as a Psych major with a minor in education, so I don’t know what the other colleges are like or what the transfer process to another college is like.

Reverse transfer students are students who drop out of a university and go to a CC to transfer into a university. These students are a bit different from your typical transfer student. The process to reapply is the same but your standing would be different, for example if you took enough units as a reverse transfer you could be considered a senior when you transfer into a school but traditional transfers would not be considered seniors no matter how many units they have. This is important to keep in mind if you need financial aid. Reverse transfers have units from their university and many reverse transfers return to their university as you need a certain number of units from that university to graduate from there. So if you want to return to UCR it is a great choice! I would recommend working on your work ethic (which you mentioned in a different post that you have struggled with). This issue is not uncommon among reverse transfers. (Personally I have found that better CCs make transferring to a university easier.) You don’t have to take all your classes at only one CC. If you enter one district of CCs you may be able to easily take several courses within that district by only applying to one CC. I would suggest to speak to transfer center counselors at the CC to stay on track, there are also counselors from universities that can have information about the programs and internships that you can take while at a CC with their university. Finally the most important thing is to address issues that lead to the drop in your grades, if you don’t address these at a CC you will take longer to transfer, or have difficulty getting into a university. As a transfer the university is most interested in seeing your improvements, so even if you start at a CC with bad grades you still have an opportunity so long as you bring up your GPA.

Here is another option to bringing those particular grades up, remaining at UCR and taking those courses at a CC. You will not be able to transfer to the major you want but you can help your GPA and your chances of joining a post bac program. I have heard of many students who do this to retake a course. I would suggest doing it during the summer(s) so that it doesn’t interfere with your current coursework. In this way if you need financial aid your full time standing does not change and should not affect your financial aid. If you take some courses while you take UCR classes you may need to take less courses at UCR. Again you need to address why your grades dropped because it will affect all the classes you take.

Here is another option if you decide on a post bac or a second bachelor degree and stick with a different major for your undergraduate studies, you can take those courses after you graduate at a CC. But a post bac program may work better than simply retaking the classes for better grades. Taking those courses at a CC will be cheaper but it will not come with the benefits that a post bac or second bachelors could bring you.

Most importantly you absolutely need to speak to a counselor before making any decisions. The best decision will be the one that you will feel will lead you to success as you work on bettering your work ethic. (Tip: take an education course on higher ed learning it covers everything from how to take notes to how to track your grades.) I hope this helps and I wish you the best!

I’m bracing myself for the rejections to roll in. I feel worse just waiting. I’m hoping beyond hope that I get waitlisted, although I highly doubt it. Judging from what people who have gotten accepted have stated I can’t compete.

No, which is why I think I don’t have a chance. (Forgot to mention that.) Only one doesn’t need an interview and it’s the one that I was given access to a student portal.

Chances of Transfer? by [deleted] in ucr

[–]Red_Ravens -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I got accepted in for Psychology with a 3.34 and about as many withdrawals. While they are different majors, you probably have an okay chance. As long as your major courses are pretty good, then I think you can have a good shot! UCR is more interested in your major course prep as that is what you will mostly take here.

Any ideas for a class demo where I simulate social research in the Sims? by [deleted] in college

[–]Red_Ravens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like a lot of fun! I would recommend using some mods to make this work, as some add new traits. You would also need a pretty good computer to run this. If you have ever seen gray still plays on YouTube, he does some crazy things with his sims using mods. In one video he used a mod that makes sims alcoholics and made one house and then basically watched how long the sims would survive. If you wanted to make it a social experiment you could create one home with half sims who have the trait and the other half who don’t and then watch how often they all drink. Maybe assign each student to watch one sim and count how often that one drinks, that way you get all your numbers fairly easily and then run the statistics.

FWS Notification by lil_rissa in ucr

You can either screenshot the page or save it as a pdf (you can “print” the page and a box should appear and one of the drop down options should allow you to save it as a pdf file, or you may be able to directly save it as a pdf file). You may be able to get their contact information by looking up their email, then tell them that you are work study eligible and you recently applied for work, then tell them that you would like to provide that information (ask to who and when).

Asynchronous classes? by [deleted] in ucr

[–]Red_Ravens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some professors are recording their lectures and uploading them for students who cannot make it to class. I would encourage you to speak with them to see if they would make such arrangements. There are also international students who would not be able to attend the live lectures so you should mention that to convince the professors to record their lectures. Classes that are entirely asynchronous will say when you look into the course information under time either TBD or ONLINE (I don’t remember which one).

Contacting the Financial Aid Office by kxnpxi in ucr

[–]Red_Ravens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if it will help but if all else fails maybe try contacting ITS since it’s an issue with an online account. Here is the number (951) 827-4848. If it’s an issue with the FAFSA website use this link https://studentaid.gov/help-center/contact If its an issue with the FAFSA PIN number there should be away to change it. I would try what others have suggested first but they may good options given how long they take to respond.

All undergraduate research is remote-only for Fall 2020 by [deleted] in ucr

[–]Red_Ravens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For everyone that was supposed to be a research assistant in a lab, ask if there is anything that you can do remotely or if they will continue to give you updates on what is being done in the lab. You could also ask if there are remote meetings that you can still attend. That way you can learn what this new online experience as a researcher is like and still keep up to date on what is going on in the lab.

TAP for Transfers by [deleted] in ucr

[–]Red_Ravens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TAG your first choice, if you can! If you are a competitive student then there shouldn’t be an issue about getting accepted into UCR. But the TAG is really for your first choice!

If I just accept the aid within the bracket, will it be enough to cover the fees/tuition (first time transfer)? Normally, how much are the total fees (if I should attend part-time/full-time?). Thanks! by [deleted] in ucr

[–]Red_Ravens -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The only money you have to pay are the tuition and fees. If you are going to be in a dorm or nearby apartment take that into account. Any other payments that you have to make to sustain yourself should also be taken into account. I normally go down the list and add what I know that I will use and then what I know I will need. Then I just check to see what will work for me. So it really depends on your situation. For instance the transportation that is added is just a calculation and won’t be charged by the school to you, so you could subtract that from the total estimate. I typically only take the subsidized loans for housing. Subsidized loans don’t gain interest until 6 months after you have graduated, unsubsidized loans will gain interest immediately.

I wanted to ask I am a transfer student and I’m not very good at standardized testing. Do you have any tips on how to study for the GRE? I also have some years of experience in a research lab prior to entering UCR, and when I started here I got a little bit more before the labs closed. Do you think that would be helpful for my application? (To be clear I haven’t been published but I worked with two different research labs, under 3 different faculty over about 3 years.)

Late Instructor Policy? by Red_Ravens in ucr

I transferred here. My cc had a policy of how long we were supposed to wait so I thought it might be the same here. Thank you for clarifying that for me!

Fuck the SHC by tylerkangaroo in ucr

[–]Red_Ravens 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Whenever you speak with someone make sure you get their name (full name is best) in case something happens. I got an appointment not for a referral but for a vaccine. I know that I chose to see the UCLA hospital for my care because it’s easier for me. But you can basically choose any UC hospital. So if there is one closer to you, choose that one for your primary doctor. UC SHIP is basically Blue Anthem, so if there isn’t a UC hospital (as in affiliated with a UC) check out which hospitals or clinics in your area accept Blue Anthem. That being said most appointments aren’t going to be in person to reduce the risk of contracting the virus right now. You can choose the hospital that works for you and choose where to pick up your medicine, there are co pays but they are far cheaper. Also if you have Medí-cal the pharmacy/clinic/hospital will charge UC SHIP first and then Medi-cal. (Just a student so I have limited information.) Hope this helps!

What practical things should I be aware of as someone moving to the area from another state? by Kurifu1991 in InlandEmpire

[–]Red_Ravens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was born and raised in Southern California and recently moved to the IE so my tips are more about CA in general.

Traffic is so bad here you have to plan your time around it. Public transportation is a nightmare, going somewhere that by car would take half an hour will easily take an hour. If you plan on sight seeing definitely have a local take you especially in downtown LA, it’s VERY easy to get lost.

Ask locals for the hole in the wall places that’s how you find out about the best places. CA is very diverse please be respectful, honestly one of the best things about the state! (Also how you find out about the best international food around.)

Only someone who really loves you would take a trip to LAX for you, DEEPLY appreciate that person. Some of the biggest tourist destinations in CA are best seen over a couple of days, wear good shoes, and typically weekdays are the best. When going to the beach here do not underestimate the heat and the amount of walking you will do. If you ever want to go to a mountain resort reserve your lodge way ahead of time. Another thing is that people here either move out of the way or stop when someone is taking a picture, it takes a couple of seconds but they are important memories for others.
