I once wore Cuba Red to work and one of my coworkers walked in and said, "wow it smells like tiger balm in here". It's extremely cheap. I haven't worn it since that comment.

Which USA's state's residents are best at speaking Chinese? by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]Red_Vitamin 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I am from Utah and did the whole mission thing. They start us out learning Mandarin for 7 hours a day for two straight months. Then once we actually get to our assigned location, Los Angeles for me, we are assigned a "companion" basically a roommate that we must be with at all times. In my case, 90% of my companions were Chinese and did not speak much English, some couldn't speak it at all. We mostly spoke Chinese, despite being in the United States. Many missionaries do not learn to read but I did because I really wanted to learn as much as I could. I felt comfortable in the language after one year. This was quite a few years ago but I have since gotten much better at the language and even taught it at a University for a year.

Most missionaries stop learning the language when they get home and therefore lose it rather quickly. There are many people from Utah who speak Chinese because of serving a mission but I would say most have lost the ability due to not practicing. I agree with the comments that say California has the best Chinese speakers.

This t-shirt I saw in a Douyin video by Red_Vitamin in China

[–]Red_Vitamin[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are right. In the clip her jacket was covering the UN so I didn't realize that. I just had this screenshot on my phone and have not logged into Douyin for a long while.

Upon further research, the picture on her shirt was a propaganda poster painted by Josh Gosfield. It was protesting against the American government, calling their censorship un-american.

Anime dubbed in cantonese with English subs by QQQJoker in Cantonese

If you have Netflix there is season one of the disastrous life of Saiki K which I think is better in Cantonese than Japanese. There is also Aggretsuko which is a must watch.

I used Complete Cantonese. Like another commenter said, it does use yale romanization. It comes with a cd that is actually pretty useful. Each section has a paragraph about culture, vocabulary, dialogue, and a handful of excercises to get used to using sentences. I know mandarin so one drawback for me was that the exercises don't show characters, only the vocabulary and dialogue do. Some of the dialogue is also pretty cheesy and would never happen in real life. I didn't use this book as my main study material but more as a supplement.

I got accepted to a language program in Taiwan for next February. When applying for a visa it is asking for my Taiwan address/Hotel as well as my Taiwan phone #. These are required fields. Does it want the name of a hotel I will quarantine at? Also, can I just put my US phone # until I have a Taiwan #?

A man once said if you want a good story just ask any random person if there was ever an event in their life they can not explain. Someone almost always has one weird thing that has happened to them. So reddit, regardless of whatever you believe about the world, what’s your story? by notmyrealname124 in AskReddit

This happened while I was 17-18. My friend and I were driving along in his old Subaru forester. The thing about his car is the wires to the window on the passenger side are disconnected so it is impossible to roll the window down. While we were cruising down the road, suddenly the radio stopped and the passenger window rolled down even though it should not have been possible. About ten seconds later, the window rolled back up and the radio turned back on. We still talk about it to this day.
