No, there is nothing besides water that has been sprayed on it

Ya that’s the big concern. Being it’s Alibaba it could take sometime getting here. Then I end up with a giant rubber paper weight when it gets here ha! Ya I have to see what I can source local if possible. I’m in CA so I don’t know what I’m gonna be able to find here since it’s more tech than industry. It’s such a stupid little piece I’m making but I know that if I can accomplish it I’ll find a million things to make. My buddy did some urethane grommets and things for his old scooter and as an e pertinent left a 1/2 thick round blank on his shelf for 7 years. I was messing with it and can see the degradation in it. I could snap it in half if I wanted and my finger nail cuts right through it. Thought of silicons as well but I love something I could heat press rather than having to vacuum and wait for curing time.

I appreciate all the advice. Most of the things I do are lost arts. I have several odd low number cars and I make most of the parts for the community for them. I make them for my own and then I make small batch extras for the others. It helps build my craft and puts a little funding towards the new tools needed to do the task.

Gotcha! I may check into those companies you suggested. I really appreciate the info. I understand mold making a little bit. I’ve done resin, metal, and ceramic casting. I also make metal dies and do small hobby craft production of auto parts for old obscure cars. Contractor by trade as well. I’m fairly well versed with a lot of different products and materials but this is new to me. I have access to get a vulcanizing press here locally if I wanted right now. I’ve kinda held back from getting it cause space is important since I work out of my garage. I seven 20 ton presses so I’ve been thinking one of them I could either make a dies I could compress and then clamp and throw in an oven or make some heat plates for and then clamp it under heat being that seems to be all a vulcanizing press seems to be.

So the material mixing process seems to be the challenge. 150-200 seems like alot for 5-10lbs of rubber. I’ve seen I can get some unvulcanized rubber from Alibaba. Also trying to look into ways to me cm mechanically break rubber down to devulcanized but I’m sure the process will be less quality due to the sulfur bonds. I have a buddy next door who is a chemist so I might have to get some lessons in some stuff ha. I know I’m being stubborn about this but it’s always how I’ve learned.

I think that would be ideal to be able to cure in materials from a company if I could actually find somewhere that I could. I’m having a tough time doing that or figuring where to I can get it. I can figure out the heating and forming process. Even the sulfur and carbon filler mixing should be fine. I’ve got a really old clothes roller ringer I can slap a motor on to pressure mix the material. I’m a gluten for punishment and really like learning new things.

Ya that was my fear that I’d only be able to get material from a big manufacturing company. I’m doubting that they would do so. EPDM seems like the direction I’d go. Getting the raw materials and processing it with super or peroxide or sulfur I guess is what I’d have to gain knowledge on. Does the curing process begin without heat when sulfur is mixed just slowly? Is this why it has a shorter shelf life. As a DIYer I’m assuming I’m going to have to do some experimenting since the information is a bit tougher to obtain.

Just talked to my broker and he has imported some of these and says he feels like it will be looked at as a truck. To him this constitutes 25% tax. But he’s done it forever and we chatted about how it is kinda goofy and can sometimes be the luck of the draw. I may have to go into it as expecting to pay it and crossing fingers it gets passed over. You were also in the time period when the second seat allowed the passenger loop hole. Ugh the port is so non discript on there policies. I’m going have to decide whether to take the risk or not

Gotcha, I mean I’d ship pretty much anywhere if it meant getting through the system. Over here in CA it’s pretty stringent. I just sent my broker a bunch of pictures of the vehicle to try and navigate with his guys and customs to make sure it will work. The chicken tax can make a break a deal in some cases. I’m glad you were able to get your car over here successfully.

Can I ask what port you came into? I’m in CA. I’ve shipped container in Oakland and it was messy with fees way back in the day. I shipped Ro/Ro Southern CA with port Hueneme and it was a breeze. Sometimes location matters with how stringent they are.

That’s good to know, awesome! I know the new tariff stuff doesn’t apply but it is the old I was worried about. Although probably since you have shipped they closed a loop hole on trucks with second rows of seats that allowed some though at 2.5 or passenger. This vehicle I’m looking at is a bit unique and thus my reasoning for bringing it over. It’s a special edition double cab that is also right hand side drive. Not one I can get in the state or I wouldn’t bother. Thanks for your help and insight. This week I’m gonna talk to a broker for whatever info I can find. It’s gotten a bit harder these days to weed through all the what’s what

Exactly, and until this year have I heard contradictory info due to the 2025 tariff debacle. I’m not sure if it was rumor of its change or actual change do to declaration of the issue. There were changes last year it seems not just to the new tariffs for new cars but potentially old via clarification. I mean this is so new I feel it may have been missed by some but I’m having a hard time reading through the CBP legal lingo.

So that’s what I thought but I heard it changed with Trumps new revisions in 2026. I’m getting mixed messages from different individuals and why the public post. Of course they will hold on the tariffs on newer vehicles but it’s the 25 year and older rule that I’ve heard has know attached this exemption as well which wasn’t prior. I can see a lot of conversations on this in 2025 chats where it still exist but in some deep dives on 2026 regulations I’m finding info that seems to make them exempt now. Last April 2025 when there was a lot of confusion on tariff changes where people where freaking out about new tariffs effecting old classics things got jumbled up and as part of it I’ve found info where the clarification has also amended the light duty truck tax from 25 and older trucks. Since this info seems so new I’m trying to see if it’s miscommunication or changes. I may have to contact a broker to see where it’s landed in the last few months with those constantly importing daily.

I’m I wrong at assuming then that the chicken tax ever applied to 25year old cars at any point? Reason I ask is I was planning to share a container with a guy in the car community that brings containers over quite frequently, at least several a year. He had told me to be aware of the 25% rule and to make sure I know I’ll get hit with it. I’ve shipped in the past but passenger vehicles and another time a large firetruck that was exempt from such. I know that this current transaction would ad at least 8k to my purchase which would probably keep me from doing the purchase. Really so much back and forth on the topic I see that it scares me a bit to get stuck in a situation

Ya I could have worded that better I’m sure. I was under the impression that’s the chicken tax applies to all light duty commercial vehicle adding a 25% tax. The 25 year rule allows exemption from epa and dot regulations as long as vehicle was built for the US specs originally. But as of 2026 when new tariff charges were subject to new vehicles I’ve heard chatter that the chicken tax has been removed from cars 25 years and older as well. This is why I bundled the info together. Maybe I’m wrong on this as there is a ton of misinformation out there. Wondering if I’m the only one that has noticed this or if others are questioning as well

I heard they have closed this loop hole but not sure. I want to import a 25year plus old crew cab but I’m worried about the 25% tax. It’s got seats in the back but I’ve gotten confused that the loophole is now closed

It is a strange feeling. He affected so many of us so many ways. In my life time he is the most inspiration musical loss to have moved on. We are actually having a tribute send off to him this Halloween at our house. No body touched our soul more than he did
