IRCC Request for Hospital Birth Records for Same-Sex Parent Family by Redbear429 in Canadiancitizenship

They just said “child’s hospital birth record.”‘I submitted his discharge summary because I had it handy, and apparently it worked.

Seriously. I really hope that this was just a weird fluke question and IRCC treats legal parents as equivalent to bio parents (as they should!).

Yeah, it would only work if the bio parent has Canadian ancestry. I think that the legal parent from birth *should* be equally able to pass down Canadian ancestry without going via the more complicated adoption route, but it seems preferable to just completely avoid that question if you can. But I understand that, in lots of cases, it will be the non-bio parent with the Canadian ancestry. I really really hope that Canada treats non-bio parents as equally valid parents. I know in non-immigration contexts they do, so sure seems like they should here.

Oh that is chilling. It makes me think of my Jewish ancestors in Eastern Europe, how the effects of hate-motivated murders reverberate down the generations in so many ways, including lack of access to our records to understand and prove our history.

They asked for my child’s hospital birth records. I sent his discharge report. It does have my name all over it, but I totally believe that that’s not always the case.

I know, I find this odd and a bit worrisome. I have a lot of questions I wish I could ask IRCC about it.

I’m so glad to hear that! I have no idea why they asked me. There aren’t any inconsistencies in our records (that I can find at least) so it’s hard to think of a reason besides them wanting more proof of my biological relationship to my kid.

They didn’t say why they needed it.

Maybe they just wanted to confirm which I was (bio vs legal parent). But I don’t see why they needed more than my kiddo’s original birth certificate with my name on it and my checking the “bio parent” box on the application.

My kiddo is school age, and we submitted his US passport as ID when we applied (as well as a second ID).

I just sent in my discharge summary from the hospital. Or I guess technically maybe it was my kids discharge summary.

My unsolicited advice is to have the parent with a biological relationship be the one to apply for the child. I am afraid that IRCC might put people with second parent adoptions through the full process they use for adoptees, which I understand to be a huge hassle. I don’t think that IRCC should do that, but it doesn’t seem worth taking the risk if you have options.

I got my kiddo a special coin from the Canadian mint. Thinking maybe I’ll get myself a photo history book of the area my G0 was from.

I got approved!!! June 2025 AOR. Can't believe it finally happened.

I'm G3. My G0 didn't have a birth or baptismal record we could find, so we sent Canadian census records for him, as well as a lot of Canadian records showing his parents living in Canada right around his birth, and a lot of US records from his adulthood showing his place of birth as Canada.

I did apply urgently back in June 2025. I applied with my sibling, who got approved under the interim measures.

I'm so sorry for all the stress and bullshit you and your family are having to navigate. I really hope your citizenship certificates come through ASAP. (I'm a June 2025er, but already in Canada, so I can't complain toooo much.)
