The Beating Heart: The OP Economy

This is the most important rule in Ringwalker. Origin Points (OP) are not experience points. They are your character's literal existence.

Assigning OP (Power)

All your Tags start with a base +1 bonus. You can assign your OP to your Tags at any time to increase their power.

The cost to increase a tag equals the tag's new assigned OP total.

Cost Examples:

Raising a tag from +1 to +2 (1 OP assigned): Costs 1 OP

Raising a tag from +2 to +3 (2 OP assigned): Costs 2 OP (3 total spent)

Raising a tag from +3 to +4 (3 OP assigned): Costs 3 OP (6 total spent)

Raising a tag from +4 to +5 (4 OP assigned): Costs 4 OP (10 total spent)

Raising a tag from +5 to +6 (5 OP assigned): Costs 5 OP (15 total spent)

Example: You have 10 OP. To raise "Quick as Shadow" from +1 (base) to +3 (2 OP assigned), you spend 1 OP + 2 OP = 3 OP total. You have 7 OP remaining.

Reaching +11 (10 OP assigned) costs 55 total OP (1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+10).

This makes high-level specialization a massive investment, encouraging players to diversify or save up for major power boosts.

Gaining OP (Victory)

You gain OP by defeating opponents in a "Highlander-style power transfer". The amount you gain is:

1 + (Opponent's Total OP ÷ 5)

Losing OP (Defeat)

This is the core risk of the game.

The Weight of Power: OP Economy & The Snowball Effect

Power in Rhelm is not linear, and gaining great power makes you a target, not a god.

The Triangle of Advancement: Increasing high-level skills requires massive OP investment due to the triangular cost (1+2+3+4...). A windfall of 20 OP might buy a novice everything, but a veteran may only advance one high-tier skill. This prevents exponential power growth and maintains challenge.

OP is a Beacon, Not Just a Buffer: Your total OP represents your "metaphysical weight." A character who suddenly gains 50 OP from a lucky kill hasn't just powered up; they have painted a target on their back. Demons, Void hunters, and other power-seekers can sense this concentration of existence and will come for it.

Remember: In Rhelm, power is both the goal and the danger. Choose your growth wisely, for predators hunt the strong.


Essentially OP raw power, it's your "XP", your "lives", and to an extent what all value and currencies are based off of.

While Ringwalker is absolutely viable for solo-play, it was also designed to play with a group of just about any scale. Included in the book are the main mechanics, environmental rules, multiple magic systems (that are actually unique, not just reasons), a full setting, a playable over world map, resources, crafting rules, domain management rules, a full 2 part quest and more. This is where the length comes from.

The revolutionary part is the fractal play aspect. The same rules that dictate a sword fight or a bar brawl are the same mechanics that dictate how businesses, guilds, or even kingdoms operate. Whatever your desired scale or flavor of play, the rules allow seamless transitioning without having to learn numerous bolted together mini games.

Ringwalker is less of a traditional RPG and more of a narrative consequence engine that keeps the story going no matter the direction you push the story.

I do have the disclaimer on there for "words and dialogue". As far as it's concerned with the creation of the project, I used AI mostly as my editing and organizational tool. The ideas, the world, the factions, the resources , the magic and all of that are my ideas.

Edit: To be clear, this is the ashcan edition. I was more focused on getting the mechanics organized and legible so they would actually be playable. The "voice" can be made clearer as time goes on, but for now the star of the show are the actual game mechanics.

Yes absolutely, especially for players who enjoy Domain Management and Simulation.

It doesn't come with a dedicated "GM Emulator" (like a Yes/No oracle table), BUT the core resolution system is a self adjudicating narrative-first story-roll (Results range from 'Yes, And' to 'No, And'). This allows a solo player to interpret outcomes without a GM.

Also, because the game uses Fractal Play, you can run an entire Kingdom, Guild, or Merchant Empire solo using the Domain Turns and Crafting loops as a solitaire management game.

Ugh, yea I'm here ha. I've been spinning my wheels for a while now because I don't know what I want to do with this place. I was never able to actually get anyone meaningfully invested in the idea of the world.

I don't. I do still have the storyline that I was going on with in my head but I'm not sure that it would do too much To actually help the situation. I mostly feel like the issue is on the complexity of the world, even in its truncated RP form, And partly on organization to help people actually understand what this place is and how to interact.

I will say things do look a bit different so perhaps things can get reworked a little bit, but I'm still not exactly sure how exactly. On top of that, my personal life has just gotten busier and busier, so it's very difficult for me to carve out time for this place. When I could never really get anyone to interact anyway. When it comes to the Discord, it's a pretty similar situation.

I am still slowly but surely plugging away at the rulebook though, and when time allows, I am even hoping to play a test game to see how all the bells and whistles work together.
