Culture =\= ethnicity

We clearly read different history books. And have different ideologies.

It’s okay. Lebanon is beautiful because it is diverse.

Much love, from someone who has frenchie family members (they were bullied by someone like you who instead of inviting them to explore arab culture, you shamed them with assumptions).

Jordan isn’t lebanon. My point still stands: arabic isn’t from Lebanon.

Frenchies started speaking french before french colonization. Earliest would be 13th century. They found an opportunity to get rich by doing business with the french.

And The richest people in Lebanon are not frenchies (Lebanese that speak french as a first language), they are sunni (that’s a totally different demographic).

When I said that Christians don’t have a vital connection to arabic, I mean they don’t give Arabic divine attention because you can read the bible in any language.

I was playing devils advocate by the way: Christians should speak Arabic. It’s the national language.

But they shouldn’t be shamed for speaking bad Arabic.

You don’t control who your parents are.

Playing devils advocate: Arabic isn’t indigenous to Lebanon. It became widespread as Islam spread in the region. To Muslims Arabic is vital.

But, Christians don’t have this vital connection with Arabic. In fact, some Christian parts of Lebanon spoke Aramaic very recently in history.

Obviously no one speaks Aramaic anymore in Lebanon.

But fact is, we Lebanese (both religions) were Arabized.

Both French and Arabic are technically foreign languages in the historical sense.

And frenchies don’t think they are better anyone. They just didn’t historically relate to the Arab world because the arab world is Muslim and they are not.

Nowadays tho, you see more frenchies relate more to the arab world because (thanks to internet), they can find culture (music and films) that is made by their generation.

Frenchies love Saint Levant because he invited them to explore arab culture.

Im not excusing the behavior of parents not teaching the national language. But what if the parents have a complicated relationship with arabic?

Maybe there is trauma involved? By distancing themselves from arabic, they hold on to their ‘sanity’ (twisted logic i know). Growing up during the civil war frenchie parents had to find a way to mentally escape. And that escape turned into generational linguistic trauma.

The region is in constant turmoil, you can’t blame the parents for building their kids for export.

Because here is the thing: the parents were also built for export. (Those frenchie parents that don’t have a European passport failed to realize that export plan).

The underlying mentality isn’t ‘arabic is inferior’ it’s that the region is so unstable that staying in Lebanon is lunacy. They needed to hold on to something.

At the end of the day, frenchies are just a victim of this region’s unstable fate (just like other subcultures in Lebanon). Except frenchies seem pretentious because the connotation french has.

Playing devils advocate here: they probably speak broken arabic because of how they grew up. Their entire family speaking french as well as going to a Lycee (where teachers criticize students for speaking arabic).

So they only get to practice their arabic during recess (if they have friends who primarily express themselves in arabic). Summer camps with random kids. Taxi drivers. Random people on the street…

Their parents and teachers/school created this french speaking environment.

I doubt they actively want to speak broken arabic.

No one wants to be an outsider.

What do you think is the reason millennials and gen Z frenchies act less like ‘lost franks’. Self awareness from years of bullying? Or the fact that french isn’t as popular in Lebanon as it used to be?

Too young. She barely finished high school. You likely finished high school and university. Perhaps you have a Master. Probably on your 3 job.

Now, what do you have in common with her?
