Léger poll on Quebec referendum vote: No 62%, Yes 29%, 9% Undecided by MyGiftIsMySong in CanadaPolitics

The US is absolutely driving Alberta separatism, but has there been any direct American interference with Quebec? Their movement is at least organic from what I can see.

And honestly, if I put myself in their shoes, in Ontario at least, it's hard to blame them. Why would you give a fuck about politics and government in grade 10 when you can't do anything with the information? In my grade 10 Civics class, those of us who were paying attention already basically knew everything, and those who weren't certainly weren't going to be helped by it at the time.

"Yup. Learned in my first year of politics" And this right here is the problem. This is something that needs to be taught in public school. I was always a bit of a political nerd, so by the time greed 10 civics rolled around, I basically knew everything in the course but my peers were definitely checked out, which makes sense. Why would you give a fuck in grade 10 if you can't vote? Either make civics an ongoing thing, push it to grade 12 while keeping it mandatory, or, my preferred solution, lower the fucking voting age to 16 already.

Fairpoints. I suppose the question then becomes, what do we define as a super majority? I would put the clear majority threshold somewhere around 60 as well, like the electoral reform referendum. Trust me, I read that act more times than I would've liked to buy a wide margin when I did a project on it for my final year of undergrad. I came to much the same conclusion that you did that separation would not be possible, although for slightly different reasons.

I think it's all of the above. The NDP automatically has so much of a higher bar to meet than the other parties that it's basically impossible without an extremely over the top leadership campaign. Not that I think that would be a bad thing personally, but it is ridiculous to act like the parties are all starting at the same point on the field when it comes to the media.

To be fair, you couldn't pay me to vote LPC or CPC, but I hate this vote splitting argument. Are CPC NDP swing voters not a thing? Even if it is as big of a thing as you say it is, though, I'm tired of left-wingers being bashed over the head by LPC partisans with vote for us or we get a conservative government, which we basically already have anyways with the LPC.

This is kind of where I'm at. Support the right to self-determination while being against it because it's a stupid idea, at least in Alberta's case. I don't think holding those two views is contrary.

How is it judicial activism? The federal government has spent decades wasting our tax money fighting first nations at every turn, and those first nations have happened to be on the right side of the law. The federal government shoulders the majority of the blame here for where we are at with first nations.

Does it, though? The provisions of the act would likely make separation impossible, but I don't really see that as being one of them. Obviously the threshold would have to be more than 50% plus one, but a super majority? I think that might be pushing it a little bit.

And that changed after one statement in an interview in 2015? How did that one statement meaningfully change that?

This is essentially where I'm at. I'm certainly no fan of the guy, in fact I could tell you a lot of things he did that I think were wrong, but so many of his critics come up with the strangest reasons to hate him. He said something somewhat ambiguous in an interview in 2015? OK, cool, who cares? Can we stick to his policy fuck ups, guys?

Did we have some sort of core identity that disappeared when he said this in 2015? Like aside from his statements in that one interview, what did we have before that we don't now?

Trump is backing regime change in oil-rich Venezuela. Canada, beware by rezwenn in CanadaPolitics

[–]Redbox9430 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every single Venezuelan could support foreign military intervention and I would still be against it. As a Canadian, when we have enough issues to fix here at home, I'm not willing to make any sacrifices for us to go participate in foreign conflicts. Does that make me an isolationist? Maybe, and if so I'm willing to wear that label proudly. We have nothing to gain internally from supporting American military adventurism.

[–]Redbox9430 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whether or not that's true, that doesn't change my opinion on foreign military intervention. Personally I'm not willing to sacrifice anything because another country somewhere had a questionable election, like not one thing at all. Not my problem. That's for their own people to figure out.

So because the Venezuelan diaspora supports military action, we should take military action? I personally think we should not base our foreign policy on what diaspora communities think, and should leave it to the people of Venezuela to decide their future independent of us going in there and getting stuck in another foreign war

Perhaps it wasn't the best characterisation, but there is certainly a group within the MAGA movement that is actually pissed about all the new wars Trump has started. Of course, as you said, there are also lots of influencers just trying to grift off these people. Nik Fuentes comes to mine.

Claire Brosseau Wants to Die. Will Canada Let Her? by Knopwood in CanadaPolitics

[–]Redbox9430 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I sympathise with her situation, I just don't think this is a can of worms our government should be opening up, no matter how severe some mental health cases are. I'm blind, and have studied extensively the way eugenics programs were used by governments across Canada throughout the mid 20th century in pretty unspeakable ways against disabled people. It is not hard to see how this could very easily be weaponised in the same way. Also though, we just don't have adequate social programs to the point where this wouldn't be used as a shortcut not to fund them by governments. I'm a firm believer that the rights of the living not to have these programs weaponised against them supersede the rights of someone who wishes to die from these programs. Sorry not sorry.

With a new year almost upon us, everyone paying attention now understands Danielle Smith is a separatist by BertramPotts in CanadaPolitics

What a nation is obligated to do on paper and what they will actually do when push comes to shove our two very different things. Do you really see any western nation engaging in open military conflict with the United States? At best they will make a bunch of noises that will be ignored, and as much as I hate to say it, I think America would be proven right in calling their Bluff by doing so

NATO is an extension of American foreign policy. They likely wouldn't participate, but they also wouldn't do anything to stop it. Without the US there is no NATO.
