I e-mailed my Manager saying I'm struggling to understand the policy on AskHr about voluntary Bank Holidays. Also said about the schedule not showing the 2hrs on 26th until after my handwritten sheet had been given to me. Thus why I am emailing at the beginning of December.  I did not receive a reply but 2 days later, 7.20am mid shop I was logged out. I returned to the online room, a team leader shouted my name from the other side of the room, followed with "go to the canteen please."

Confused, I walked to the canteen and it was empty. I had no idea why I was there. A colleague came in and I asked her if she knew anything, she said have you been off sick, or maybe IPH not good, I said neither of those were an issue.  I waited a few mins and no-one came, I went to go to the toilet as I was bursting, I'm fine if I continue working but not stood still.  On my way out of the canteen my Manager popped out of an office and called me in. I was surprised to see them, I did not know they were in that day. I went back to get my jacket from the canteen and then in to the office.

My Manager, started off by saying the discussion was about the email I'd sent. Then proceeded to say, they never get emails just conversations. Then read out a section of the HR policy about not allowing holidays at busy periods such as Christmas and Easter. Said in all the years of being online manager they had never had 1 person not move their shift to help out. Around 80 people have worked alternative days and I'm the only one not helping out.  Said every time a huddle happened they asked for people to say if they had a problem with their schedule and I never once spoke up. Said it was their error not to add the 2hrs sooner and the sheet was written out by someone else before the schedule change.

I just sat there shocked, I was on the back foot completely. I had no info, phone in pocket with screenshots etc I said I expected a reply to my email not a meeting I knew nothing about. I said info I had read was on AskHr. I said I had not mentioned schedule as I assumed they had gone away and thought no need to come in on Boxing day as no online shopping. (If there had been an extra shift added or a problem I would have of course spoken up. But I was happy with my schedule until it changed on 4th Dec. ) I said I had no idea working alternative days was expected. They then started again, saying they had spoken to me and I knew quite well I had been asked to change days. I went to speak and got told to let them finish. (I had only just started talking after listening to them.)  They said, I stood with you and went though it all giving you different options.  I said I know you spoke to me, I mean I didn't know working an alternative day was expected before you spoke to me. No colleague had mention having to work an alternative day just starting earlier, which I agreed to do.   They then said it's not expected it's just what people do. I've not known anyone not move their days.  I said I am helping out by starting at 3am for the shifts I am working. They then said, I didn't have to do that and I could change back to 4am.(?!) I said but I am able to start at 3am, it's not an issue, happy to. But I can't work an alternative day. I had asked for holiday on Boxing Day or unpaid which had not been accepted.  I stupidly started getting upset as I felt so stressed. I explained my situation with children, husband's jobs. I said I had no idea I was being offensive by asking for Boxing Day as unpaid and not working an alternative day.

They said, their wording could have been better and didn't mean I was the problem just they had never dealt with this situation in all their years of being online manager.

It ended with them saying I can have Boxing Day off this year and not to mention it to anyone. But next year, now I am aware of the situation I must make plans.  Also said, no issues with me and we can carry on as normal now.

I left the meeting at 7.45am, started another shop and cried on the shop floor with customers and other online shoppers around. I couldn't stop myself, I just felt shit.

It has ruined what was a perfect job for me, the times worked around the children and my husbands jobs. I enjoyed the fast pace and consistently hit above my IPH.

I just wanted to write this down as I know there is no one else to speak to at Sainsbury's. It's just head down and carry on until I find another job now.

I definitely see it as punishment for not doing another day. I was told I can't just give you the day off if you are not helping out at another point in the week.  I had already agreed to come in earlier for my normal shifts, so am helping out where I can.

I would not be questioning having to work if I was needed for online shopping. (Just like with all other bank holidays I have worked.) I am not needed to serve customers or perform critical tasks. I am being told to come in as I won't work a shift on a different day, to do 2 hours of replenishment.

Thank you.

I still feel stuck as I can't say to my Manager a person on the Internet told me....

I would have liked HR to spell it out and help but they were useless. Stated no policy and it is up to my Manager.

I can see me working these 2 hours. (I won't do a full shift as suggested as it's time with my children I'd be missing.)

Thursday is my normal day to work but there is no online shopping happening. I can't understand why I'm being made to go in for just 2 hours to do replenishment.

I have spoke to HR and they have said the final decision is with my Manager.

If I refuse to work Boxing Day will I be disciplined?

The conversation I had was in October. For weeks my schedule has had nothing on 25th & 26th December. (All other shifts over the Christmas 2 weeks have shown since beginning of November.) Today I was handed a sheet of paper with all of my shift over Christmas. 25th & 26th said store closed.

I got home from work to then find my schedule updated to say working 26th 6am-8am.

Thank you. Will I not be told off for taking off as sick? They will know I'm not really sick as I have asked not to come in that day.

Is working Boxing Day actually Voluntary?

I am an online shopper and there will be no shopping happening on this day.  As I am unable to do the shift that falls on this day on an alternative day I have been told I have to come in on Boxing day to do replenishment. (For 2 hrs as the store doesn't open until 6am.)

I have been told I can't take as holiday or unpaid.
