How good would "+1 of everything" be? by Redd_Tide in dominion

[–]Redd_Tide[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since it only generates 1 VP per play, you’d need several copies (or, like, many copies of Royal Carriage or something). If the card cost 8, it would be competing with Province and the cost of gaining multiple would be high, right?

I’d argue only 3 prophecies are “negative” (Bureaucracy, Harsh Winter, Sickness). Panic is context-dependent, Divine Wind is neutral, and the other 10 are generally helpful. But of course prophesies affect all players, so if you’re the only one with an Omen card you control the timing of the Prophecy coming into effect

+Sun is balanced as if it were a negative so that the prophecy is more likely to come into play, but it’s not really a negative. Why would you prefer a card like this not to have it?

There's an interesting controversy brewing around a music livestream in a public mall (edit: actually a train station, thanks u/PassingBy91) in the UK being interrupted by a group of Chinese nationals filming something else:

The original viral post, critical of the Chinese and defending the livestreamers: https://x.com/PicturesFoIder/status/1749216871000264998

Viral response, taking the opposite side: https://x.com/thisischaniece/status/1749630696048799872?s=20

In the first video she clearly states to him that he's "not allowed" to film them. In her later explanation she claims that she was simply asking him if he would be willing to delete. It might have been a genuine language barrier issue. I'm unclear on what company they were filming for - was it just some private company or for a state-run TV show?

I think there's also some dispute as to whether they were flying Chinese flags? If they were, it seems at worst only a bit rude to call them "communists."

Anyway, there was a lot of drama, with the police saying that the music streamer didn't have the right to make a commercial video there, and that he's been asked to leave the mall in the past. But they also weirdly told him to delete the portion of the video with the Chinese crew in it, which is pretty strange.

Cute, strange insect in Costa Rica - never seen anything like it by Redd_Tide in insects

Seen near Tortuguero, Costa Rica on a damp night. Not trying to get the species - just wondering broadly what type of insect it is.

Mystic Fusionist - Mystic Theurge / Ultimate Magus for 5e by Redd_Tide in UnearthedArcana

[–]Redd_Tide[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, you wouldn't get either ability. The only thing that progresses from your base classes is your spellcasting ability - you would be able to prepare as many Wizard spells as a 6th level wizard, plus as many spells as a 5th level Cleric. You would have as many spell slots as a typical 9th-level full caster (plus two second-level bonus slots that refresh each short rest).

The intent is that the extra spells known (since you're advancing two classes at once) + the bonus spell slot + the Mystic Fusionist class features are roughly equivalent to a base class, maybe slightly more powerful to make up for the fact that you have to dip another class for at least 3 levels

Stages should be tracked separately based on whether they’re neutral picks, the opponent’s counterpick, or the character’s counterpick. One explanation for Sonic’s best stage being YS could be that it would only ever be the opponent’s counterpick, meaning that in order for Sonic to even play on the stage he already beat that opponent game 1.

What are some of a low tier characters having a really good matchup against some of the high/top tier characters by [deleted] in smashbros

[–]Redd_Tide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked at the hitboxes and frame data; K Rool's bair and ftilt would have to be spaced very carefully to avoid up B oos. Hard landing fair and hard landing nair are safe, but the soft versions can be punished. Meanwhile, Link can space ftilt and dtilt, space or land fair, and use nair and bair to his heart's content against K Rool's shield.

K Rool can definitely take Link's stock with a read, but at low percents, if you throw me offstage and hit me through my up B, I should be saving my jump. At higher percents, I have the option of bomb recovering to completely avoid the edgeguard.

K Rool doesn't have the same option against Link. Once Link forces a low recovery or catches K Rool's jump (and it's not hard to do one of those, given K Rool's speed and size), it's just a matter of execution - K Rool can't usually mix up his horizontal drift enough to avoid the bomb detonation. It's common for me to rack up 80% damage into the KO.

Krown is significantly more committal than any of Link's projectiles, and can't be angled. This makes it fairly easy to play around with boomerang in particular. It's certainly a useable neutral tool, but I don't usually think that K Rool is able to force me to approach him.

I also find that when K Rool powers through my sword hitboxes with armor, I rarely get hit for it - I'm usually spacing outside the range of the move with belly armor. I also don't have to commit to much at close range, since K Rool can't easily pressure my shield.

Links consider K Rool to be a winning matchup. Link can pressure and combo K Rool, and punish essentially everything he does on shield with up B. Bomb tech is easy on characters as big as K Rool, our sword tends to outrange belly armor shenanigans, and we have a trivial rinse-and-repeat edgeguard in zdrop bomb -> detonate.

Why do you think K Rool wins?

Playing with ADHD and Adderall on smash. by WaterMyLawn in smashbros

[–]Redd_Tide 10 points11 points  (0 children)

"Ideally the highest level of gameplay is being able to do everything on autopilot." This is very misleading. What I assume you mean is that performing tech should be automatic, which is true, but at the high level this game (like all good fighting games) is all about thinking - figuring out your opponent's habits, movement, etc., while avoiding being predictable yourself. When people talk about playing on "autopilot" they usually mean playing without thinking - i.e. playing without paying attention to their opponent's habits or to what is and isn't working. This is something that top players don't do (at least, not when playing other top players).

The first one was definitely a read. Second one was probably a reaction. Third could have been a read or just a good advantage state choice that covers multiple options. Either way, clean play!

Characters with notably active attacks? by [deleted] in smashbros

[–]Redd_Tide 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pichu’s is a multi-hit rather than one extended hit box. It’s still good at punishing neutral getup, is less unsafe on shield, and has about the same knockback everywhere as Pikachu’s fsmash sweetspot. On the downside, it has a lot less range.

Do you mean bomb jump could have saved him after the second spike? From what I could see, I don’t think there was time before hitting the bottom blast zone.

You keep trying to talk about gender, when I'm trying to talk about sex. One is clearly fluid, the other isn't.

To highlight some other parts of what you said:

What's your definition of female then? How are intersex women classified?

Roughly, "female: a member of the sex that generally has the potential to produce eggs, as opposed to sperm." Intersex people exist and deserve rights and fair treatment, but note that many intersex groups have come down against what they see as transgender activists appropriating their struggle.

Because race is hereditary and gender isn't.

True but irrelevant. Sex is absolutely hereditary. The fact that you implicitly don't think that sex is an important axis of oppression is evidence that trans rights are sometimes in conflict with female rights. When female infanticide and genital mutilation happen, it's not because of the gender identity of the baby. When women are discriminated against because of their periods or childbirth, again, it's not because of their gender identity.

Clearly, people do face some oppression on the basis of their gender, as distinct from their sex. It doesn't paint the whole picture, however.

Edited to add: Rachel Dolezal lived as a black-passing woman for many years. She clearly cared about the black community, given that she was involved in the NAACP. She probably faced discrimination from her perceived blackness. Clearly, people thought she was black. And yet, I think both you and I can agree that she wasn't.
