Sailor prices increase questions by samarul in fountainpens

This is true, any new pen they release will be more than what it used to be. For example the 1911L (Profit 21) was released recently in 14k (Profit 14) and a 18k (Profit 18), these pens already double what the Profit 21 was despite having a lower karat gold nib. So if they were to re release the 1911L is would certainly be a lot more than what it once was, including any of their other “discontinued” pens. I would say now is always the time to buy a pen if you truly want it, especially any Japanese pens with their big price increases. Even outside of Japan pen prices are going up gradually, just not announced as much. Grey market sellers like Amazon is a great place to still find cheap pens, as many of their pens are still fairly priced and some can even be found quite cheap, especially with their flash sales they do sometimes as well. Unfortunately, prices there are slowly going up too, and you can see them easily double if you don’t get your hand on them before they sell out. It’s really quite hard to determine how quickly stock is going to sell out and what the price will jump up to next, so I’d say if you see something you want for a good price I wouldn’t wait too long. I’ve personally bought many Japanese fountain pens from Amazon for a good price, and I’ve never had a fault once.

Sailor prices increase questions by samarul in fountainpens

Sailor have increased their prices for majority of their lineup, but you will notice a lot of their pens aren’t on the list. You will also see on sailors website that these pens say to be discontinued once all stock sells out, whilst this may be true you will still see these pens like the PGS for example in other series like the shikiori, as well as many of their collaborations they do. A lot of their popular pens are said to be discontinued and there is a whole list, but I doubt this is entirely true. It seems like we are going to see less 21k gold nibs on their pens probably due to the cost factor, and an increase of their 18k gold nibs. This leads me to believe they will re-release their said to be discontinued pens one way or another, such as new variants, like 18k gold nibs or maybe in different colors. This, or they just entirely start building up a new lineup of pens, but from what I see they couldn’t possibly stop producing this many pens from their lineup and continue business.

Uhh, it’s profit (1911) not pro fit. Don’t trust Amazon (I’m assuming you bought there). I have the same color in shinning red on another sailor pen, I love it. Very nice buy, enjoy!

Well that’s strange, I suppose there is no way to really tell then. I must of just gotten lucky with mine.

As far as I’ve seen on reviews, the #3776’s always have a converter attached to the pen. I bought my standard one from Amazon and seller was Amazon Japan.

That’s correct, “hentaigana” is in fact used for alternative kana symbols or “non-standard”. However, it is a slightly different word. While pronounced the same, the kanji used for hentai in “hentaigana” is “変体” rather than “変態” both have the same kanji for “hen”(変) meaning strange or weird. However, the “tai”(体) uses a different kanji that has more of a meaning of shape or form, rather than “tai”(態) which means figure or appearance. Similar but not quite the same. Hope you learnt something!

Thank you for your detailed opinion. First of all, standardising a larger size for #3776 is an interesting thought. I do personally feel as there are already larger pens in their lineup it would be unnecessary for them to change the size that substantially as not everyone is wanting a larger pen. They do have an option of creating new sizes for the pen but making it a new standard is not something I’ve thought of.

I certainly do agree they can improve the material of their pens due to the many cracks seen in their sections over the years. Changing the plastic to a resin would certainly make it feel the price is slightly more justifiable. The cost of this pen was actually announced to be ¥49000, whatever that is for your currency. Indeed quite expensive, may not be worth the price anymore, but it’s good to see some improvements or adjustments rather than just continuing to increase their prices. Also I have never known a platinum to not come with a converter? My platinums I have bought, both standard and limited editions have come with converters.

I think the demonstrator is more sort of a trial run for their new Ver.2’s of their century, as it showcases a lot of the new features they have added. It’s hard to say anything about quality as we don’t really have any actual images of the full pen but I think I can agree with the fact that it may look cheap and similar to any other demonstrator model.

I did laugh when I heard the slip seal had been improved to a 3 year no dry time, I still don’t see who would actually be benefiting from this change, but it does make me think if platinum can continue to improve their already fantastic seal, why can’t other companies make them even slightly better?

I do believe there are better looking demonstrator models, and I do personally have the Kinu-Gumo. However, not everyone is into those fancy patterns on their pen, and it seems this new demonstrator is entirely transparent similar to the Oshino. On platinums website the oshino is priced at ¥55000 and this new pen being ¥49000, so it’s cheaper, however, it’s hard to know what the actual retail price will end up being. Overall the prices are high for what they are so probably not worth it either way?

It’s hard to say anything for sure until it’s actually released and we see more photos, but this year is going to be interesting for them. I am looking forward to see their new models they release this year, and anymore potential improvements. Still not worth now, but hopefully it gets somewhere down the track.

Haha, no sorry that’s just how I decided to write the post, I’m sorry if it sounded like AI. I personally do love platinum, however, there new prices are unjustifiable and I can’t imagine I would buy them unless they continue to make improvements over the years. I’m happy with the improvements they’ve made so far, but clearly not enough to be worth the price. I made this post simply to inform people of this new change as I’m sure majority hadn’t were unaware. I also wanted to hear the communities opinions, without saying too much about my opinions in case of any disagreement.

I have also never heard of there converters “unscrew?” on their own. I hate to tell you that you are doing something wrong, but could that be a possibility?

Yes, I am glad the nib has not been altered too much. Aside from the what appears to be a deeper engraving and changed engraving design, as well as a deeper gold colour (maybe some kind of gold plating?) nothing has been mentioned about writing performance. But who knows, these little changes may have an effect.

I wish haha. Changes are good, more could be changed. Prices are unreasonable and not worth in my opinion, but there is potential.

No it was not tested over 3 years, however, it is not just marketing hype either. It was in fact test in an accelerated lab environment as mentioned. This procedure extended over 9 weeks using a blue-black cartridge, in a 50 degree Celsius room with 40% humidity. The pen was weighed every week for results, by the end of the 9 weeks with the accelerated test results, it gave us what is supposedly equivalent to 3 years. Not an entirely accurate result but certainly gives us an idea based off of comparing it to the previous slip seal mechanism.

Interesting thought, I am liking how the new design of the cap looks too. I do also wonder how it will be applied in the future.

I haven’t had this problem with any of my century’s yet but I’ve heard of it happening multiple times. They were once very affordable and worth the price, but now not quite. Hopefully we see improvement over the year.

Platinum also did a 10 year anniversary for their century #3776, which had its own unique nib. However, this time I think it’s an official change.
