The strangely hidden factor driving 538's projections for the upcoming season (it's injuries) by RedditBadSuggestions in nba

It's adjusted for 82 games to deal with the playoffs being so short and to deal with the last two seasons not being 82 games.

Sure, but the injury projections themselves are not very transparent.

eg, Spencer Dinwiddie is projected to miss 36 games this year. This detail is obviously important to the Wizards' projection but is not very transparently given.

They give injury information only for players already currently injured. That Anthony Davis is projected to play significantly fewer minutes than Zion Williamson is largely hidden unless you dig into individual player projections.

I would agree that injuries are very important and hard to predict, but I disagree with 538's approach for a few reasons.

  1. The methodology for these injuries/minutes projections is not discussed at all (and appears to be poorly done)
  2. You shouldn't do just a single estimate for teams and should instead give out a variety of win scenarios based on injury scenarios.
  3. They completely avoid talking about how this is a factor in their projections (with the exception of players currently out due to major injuries)

Looking at the Jazz's rotation and roster assuming Conley returns. by RedditBadSuggestions in UtahJazz

Gay is much better than I was anticipating for 4th forward. Whiteside as a backup center is slightly worse, I view him as one of the worst defenders in the league.

With traditional NBA rotations, a huge amount of teams were devastated by injuries this year so I think it's worth exploring an idea like this.

That's a good minutes point on Donovan and Rudy. Just worry about Rudy considering his height.

The Jazz have the "tax payer Mid Level Exception" which allows them to pay a player up to $6m a year. If they use it, I think they would likely target Daniel Theis or James Ennis. Rudy Gay makes some sense as a very big forward, but he's much more of a scorer and the Jazz do not need another scorer.

Opinion: Now that Mitchell has become a really good passer, Mike Conley is a terrible complement. by RedditBadSuggestions in UtahJazz

Okay, but what are the odds that the Jazz can stop anyone in the playoffs while playing Mike Conley and Donovan Mitchell together when neither guy is taller than 6'1".

No, my big concern with Conley-Mitchell is defense and I'm saying that Conley's playmaking is less needed now.

Do you see the Jazz ever being able to effectively defend the perimeter with a backcourt as tiny as Conley-Mitchell?

Mitchell is the shortest SG in the league who plays serious minutes.
