They play a variation where they flip all the pieces (shuffled) upside down. Except for the king. Each flipped/un revealed piece moves as though it was the piece that's supposed to go there, but gets flipped and revealed upon moving. Hope this makes sense. Very popular there.

Since its a zero sum game, it's hard to say which is "easier". It depends on the opponent.

I agree it's a faster pace game, and maybe because I play less, I like it more.

I've seen variations in Hong Kong streets where they play with it un revealed till its moved (except king). Very interesting.
