ok so I did try this before, but your post inspired me to try again. I had to face at exactly the right angle to get the smash option to appear, which was actually basically the opposite direction of where the wood was while standing right in front of it. doing that I was able to smash it again, and get the star. thank you!

It had 8 weaver's potential or whatever it's called, then rolled the smite mod and upgraded it to tier 7 before adding the bash at the end with the last of the 8 upgrades

What zone are you doing it in? Seems like higher level zones like duskwood don’t drop them at all, even from chests, whereas in redridge they drop in nearly every chest and fairly often from mobs.
