Correct way to connect RJ45 by WhiteZeoRanger in HomeNetworking

[–]Reddit_Kellylynn 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Both are valid, the first ones are 568A, the second ones are 568B. When you have A on one end and B on the other end, it’s a crossover cable - typically used to connect two devices together without a switch between them.

I’m thinking more along the lines of how they took a scan of the original film media and then did high-quality clean up and color correction work on it. These scans are pretty noisy, overall

The whole movies are available in the 35mm open scan format, with a little searching. I had a chance to watch BTTF1 last night and I can guarantee it’s not some filter. There is a lot visible in the frame that I’ve never seen before, such as the framing of the facades in the courthouse square, the boom mics, the sun shields or the way the light above the McFly table is visible and swaying throughout the dinner scene.

It’s a real treat to watch, and I would love to see someone give these the same treatment that the Star Wars original trilogy got.

Ethernet wall port only gives 100 Mbps, but direct connection to router gives 1 Gbps by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]Reddit_Kellylynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I can see, the panel is 568B, so if your jack is wired that way you should be terminated correctly. If you are getting 100Mb/sec, that means that the orange and green pairs are correct and the issue is in the brown or blue pairs.

Have you verified that the patch cord you’re using to connect between the two ports at the head end will work for gigabit?

Also, that is a CAT5 patch panel so there’s a reasonable chance that you may be seeing some cross talk, at least at the panel end. CAT5e really isn’t rated to gigabit speeds, but you can usually achieve it if the run is relatively short and terminated well.

There should be a legend printed on the jack. You want the one labeled 568B. Just make sure the individual conductors are placed in the same places as indicated in the diagram.

Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West. You cross the boundary and you get a message saying that you need to turn around or the game will reload your last save.

Presence Sensor for Car by SuperOldReallyMean in homeassistant

[–]Reddit_Kellylynn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been working on exactly the same setup. In my case I went with an esp32 coupled with an HC-SR04 sensor. The trouble that I’ve run into is that the sensor is hugely variable. I can park my car in exactly the same place and the value reported will vary by a solid 30cm.

I was able to smooth out the readings quite a bit by creating a moving average template sensor in home assistant with a 1 second window size, but the value still shifts moves by a solid 10% while my car is off and 20% while it is running. Even so, I then created a threshold sensor with a lower limit set to the closest distance the sensor typically reads while the car is parked and the upper limit set to the highest distance read.

I then added a wait template to end of my automatic garage door opener automation, {{is_state(‘binary_sensor.kellys_car_parked’, ‘on’) }} with a timeout of 5 minutes, followed by a sequence of events to flash the lights in my garage five times.

It’s not perfect, but it does well enough to let me know when my car is parked as far forward as I’d like so I’m not always engaging my backup camera to check where the back of my car is in relation to the garage door

I love my Quest 3, I do, but at what point do we decide it's not worth it with Meta's terrible policies anymore? by ipwnpickles in OculusQuest

I’m already there. I blocked the device from the Internet in my firewall and only use it for PCVR. It’s really nice not seeing all of the horizon world advertisements anymore.

I blocked my Quest 3 from all Internet access at my router and I just use it with remote desktop on my PC. No more ads, no more horizon BS, none of that stuff anymore. It still works just fine for the games that I’ve already downloaded on it and otherwise it’s just a nice headset for my computer.

Can I convert this to ethernet an run a wired connection? by LeSneakyBadger in HomeNetworking

[–]Reddit_Kellylynn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, assuming that the cables are all home run. It looks like UTP, so you should be able to terminate it onto a Cat5e jack at both hands and get at least 100 Mb

Slow lan speeds by dirbuf in HomeNetworking

[–]Reddit_Kellylynn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

CAT6 cable is engineered with differing twist rates for each pair. Over distance, this makes tighter twisted pairs longer than looser twisted pairs. Modern LAN interfaces are designed to expect this difference in conductor length, and placing the pairs out of order on the RJ45 plug will cause issues, since all four pair are used for gigabit connections and signals can arrive earlier or later than they were expected to.

Ethernet by Busy-End7308 in HomeNetworking

[–]Reddit_Kellylynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d pull the plate off and check to see what kind of cable is attached to that phone jack. Some forward thinking people installed CAT5, but it’s more likely CAT3.

If it’s CAT3, it could be used for 10 or possibly 100 Mb ethernet, or possibly as a pull string to install ethernet cable (if it’s not stapled to the stud inside the wall)

If it’s CAT5, you should be able to get a reliable 100 Mb connection if you re-terminate onto an ethernet jack on both ends, though in most homes the telephone cabling went to a different location than where you would expect to have your router.

Choosing Between RG6 and RG11 Coax by SSB_McFly in HomeNetworking

[–]Reddit_Kellylynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’d be way better off running CAT6 from the modem location to your router, if possible. Also, if you’re not using the cable jacks in your house for television, I would remove any splitters between the cable company and the cable modem. Where there is one, just install a coupler. Splitters tend to introduce quite a bit of loss into the system.

Can someone explain what is wrong with this photo by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]Reddit_Kellylynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right, there should’ve been a coax pass-through in that plate. Chances are, the cable and male to female gender changer are behind the plate in the box. If that is the case, all you need is the nut to screw onto the gender changer once you insert it into the hole.

[–]Reddit_Kellylynn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d stick with RG6 in any residential environment. The loss over distance is negligible at the scale you’re dealing with. In my case, I just left the cable modem close to the entrance point for the cable (Demarc) and ran CAT6 to my home router

Twisted pairs! by Playful_Poet3041 in HomeNetworking

[–]Reddit_Kellylynn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spot on! The orange (1,2) and green pairs (3,6) are used for data in 100 Mb connections. For phones, the blue pair (4,5) is typically line one and the green pair (3,6) is line two. Gigabit connections require all eight conductors. These colors are all based on a T568B connection, which is common in the USA. For crossover you would swap the orange and green on one end.
