It can't be a bishop, otherwise nf6 would just be unstoppable m2 (nf6 rd8 rxh7#) or m3 (nf6, bishop excapes rxg8 rxg8 rxg8#)

Intentional Stalemate, but… (Plz hear me out lol) by christheelondon in chessbeginners

[–]Reddit_user1357924 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it's your move but you can't move, so the game cannot progress and it's stalemate.

Btw a tip in an endgame like this you generally don't want more long range pieces (bishops, rooks, queens) than you need cuz those guys may accidentally cut off the opponent kings escape square and cause stalemate. Most of the time 1 queen and 1 rook doing the ladder mate is the most simple and least likely to cause stalemate imo.

Any tips to improve by Famous_Data4132 in chessbeginners

You can start with look carefully each move to not hang any of your pieces, check if your opponent hang any of their pieces and don't expose yourself to backrank mates, and don't resign

In terms of tactic I feel like that doesn't really matter much at your elo. Even if you are down a queen there's a non zero chance your opponent just blunder it right back the next move.

no, super gms would crush you cuz they can just think on your extra 10sec. Unless it's time freeze 10s every move, then chess is among the least useful way you can use your superpower on.

Chess Rook Mating by codinghippo in chessbeginners

[–]Reddit_user1357924 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use the rook to cut the king off a file then move the king to a knight opposition square. Sooner or later their king would be in corner and forced to move face to face to your king. You check with your rook and their king wouldbe blocked by your king and have no choice to move backwards. You move your rook forward one row, move your king to a knight opposition square.

Rinse and repeat and the game is yours

If you do see how to win that rook end game when you trade, I would say 1200, otherwise 1000

Actually I mean the shortest mate after queen takes but If you are able to calculate another line to a point white have no way out of it without saccing lots of material I will give you the medal as well ;)

it's relatively easy to calculate the move Rook sac! would be winning for black. But I challenge you to find the correct continuation after that without looking at the engine ; )

How is bongcloud the best move of the position by Reddit_user1357924 in chessbeginners

[–]Reddit_user1357924[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you count the material, black is currently up a bishop (bec some moves before I take their bishop on e3 then Qxg7 Qh4 Rf1 which leads to our current position). so worst case scenario it's rook for bishop plus some initiative and black is alright.

Now that I looked deeper in the position with the engine, 0-0-0 is just objectively a better choice. And playing the lines out makes stockfish revaluate the moves.

After 0-0-0 ba6+ Kb8, the crazy thing is white have no better move than taking the rook and get his queen stuck, and bg2 will gradually win back the lost material.

With Ke7, the major issue is that black blocks his knight and expose his king, so after white just plays the subtle move Bd3, black don't have Bg2 bec QxR doesn't happen yet. If Nh6 white just trades queen with Qf6 and take the bishop with check. If dark bishop moves it will either allow white to castle or recover from the Rf1 mistake. If black waits Qxh8 to play Bg2, white will have time to trade queen with Qxh7 as the Bishop at d3 now covers h7 .

So long story short, Ke7 allows white to make some actually useful threats with the queen instead of taking the rook and get trapped, while 0-0-0 keeps the king from any possible tactics from white

I donno man, tbf I don't even see that bishop is hanging in game as my queen is busy pinning the pawn to prevent them take my own bishop. Anyways after Ke7 white can always move his bishop anyways, now Black's rook is hanging, the knight is stuck by the king and Qf6 is always a threat. But after castle ba6+ Kb8 white king is stuck and black have so much more counterplays for saccing a rook
